Significant Figures Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning: Sig. Fig. POGIL for Short

(What is a sig. fig. and how do you determine if a digit is significant?)

Why? This POGIL explores the concept of significant figures, also known as significant

digits or sig. figs. for short. You have already learned how to read a scale and report your number so that it shows the correct uncertainty. You learned that some digits are certain and one digit is uncertain or estimated. In this POGIL, you will learn how to write and read numbers with the correct uncertainty even though you do not know the scale that was used.

Success Criteria:

? Students will be able to determine the number of sig. figs. in a written number. ? Students will be able to write a number using the specified number of sig. figs.

Questions:

1.) How many sig. figs. does the number 870.0 have?

Four. The zero after the decimal counts.

2.) How many sig. figs. does the number 0.8700 have?

Four. The zeros after the decimal count.

3.) How many sig. figs. does 5 280 feet have? Explain.

Three. Without a decimal, the zero doesn't count.

4.) How many sig. figs. does 602 200 000 000 000 000 000 000 molecules have? Explain.

Four. Without a decimal, the zeros don't count.

5.) How many sig. figs. does 0.08206 Latm/moleK have? Explain.

Four. The first zero after the decimal doesn't count, because it doesn't follow a non-zero digit.

6.) How many sig. figs. does 1.01325 kPa have? Explain.

Six. The zero is between two non-zero digits, so it counts.

7.) In a clear, grammatically-correct sentence, explain how you determine the number of sig. figs. in a written number. All digits are considered significant, unless they are only being used to hold a place value.

8.) When are zeros significant, and when are zeros insignificant? Zeros are significant between two non-zero digits. Zeros are significant after a decimal when they follow a non-zero digit. Zeros are significant before a decimal if they follow a non-zero digit.

9.) How can you write 1 000 000 with 3 sig. figs? (Hint, there are 2 ways.) 1.00 x 106 or 1 OO OOO
