Hyde rout Toft to go top

HYDE players let out a roar of triumph as they reached their dressing-room after Saturday’s significant nine wicket demolition of leaders Toft at Werneth Low.

Their joy was not surprising as they just moved into the ECB Premier League’s top spot for the first time since finishing champions in September last year.

Brilliant individual performances from veteran Jason Whittaker, who took 7-62 off 22.3 overs of high-class seam bowling, followed by a chanceless unbeaten 107 by 18 year old Lancashire starlet Harry Dearden saw Hyde complete a victory over Toft, whom many had been fancying to win the title for the first time. They still could go on to do so, with a compact, well-led team, but it would need a major drop in form from the reigning champions.

Toft stumbled from a promising 81-1 to 159 all out, James Drummond 33, Rob Jones 31 after which Hyde had the game won in 24 overs, Bury-based Dearden flaying 18 fours and four sixes and figuring in an unbroken second wicket partnership of 136 with fellow left-hander James Duffy, 37 not out.

Hyde lead by the slender margin of four points, but have an easier remaining passage against Grappenhall and Bramhall at home and Macclesfield and Cheadle away.

Toft who now share second spot with Nantwich, have yet to meet Nantwich and Chester at home and Neston and Marple away.

Nantwich managed a rare victory without Liam Livingstone who was helping Lancashire reach the County t20 finals against Kent at Canterbury. They squeezed home by one wicket against fading Alderley Edge, who totalled 232-9, the in-form Alan Day 87, Richard Wilkinson 45, Adam Syddall capturing a splendid 6-89. Nantwich countered with 235-9 with four balls remaining, Ryan Brown dominating the innings with an unbeaten 107 (six fours and eight sixes), aided by Steve Rimmer 48, with Sean Sturrock taking 5-61. The Dabbers have yet to meet Grappenhall and Macclesfield at home and Toft and Grappenhall away.

Second ton for David Hurst

David Hurst struck his second successive century since returning to his home club Neston from the Surrey Championship. His unbeaten 108 (14 fours and two sixes) steered the Parkgate side to a four wickets win against Bowdon to move comfortably away from the drop zone. Bowdon were bowled out for 179, Carl Hey 70, Chris Finegan 3-13 and Neston replied with 171-6 in 44 overs, Chris Ashling 3-42.

Cheadle, who had to wait until June 20 for their first win, made it three 25-pointers and a tie in their last four games when they beat Bramhall by three wickets at Kingsway. Dan Lamb top-scored with 81 and Dan Brown took 5-26 in Bramhall’s innings of 190-6. Cheadle countered with 191-7, Richard Nicholson 70, skipper Paul Sperring 41 not out, while Lamb completed a personally good day with 3-68.

Bottom club Marple were involved in a thrilling finish for the second successive week, this time resulting in a hard-earned draw at Chester, who have now failed to win a league game since July 4. Rick Moore, 92 and Guy Dunbavand, 79 helped Chester amass 289-9, Andy Wylie 4-87, Andy Greasley 3-66. Marple replied with a spirited 247-9, led by Andrew Hall 55, Sam Harbinson 53 and James Morgan 52. Last pair Wylie and Greasley then held out in a 10th wicket stand to close on 247-9.

Desperately needing a win to give themselves a chance of staying up, Grappenhall lost by 45 runs at Macclesfield, who posted 217 (Nick Bertus 55, Albert Pennington 5-40). Grappers were all out for 172, collapsing after reaching 136-2, Adam Roylance 53, Sultan Raja 5-50, Ian Tate 4-57.

TIMPERLEY STEP UP DIVISION ONE PRESSURE

TIMPERLEY moved to within nine points of leaders Sale at the top of the First Division when they wrapped up the day’s fastest victory in just 33 overs at bottom club Middlewich.

Chris Page was the key man with a remarkable 7-16 and Jack White 3-28 as Middlewich crumbled to 45 all out, the lowest tally recorded anywhere in the league this season. Timperley had the game won at 46-2 inside 11 overs, the 25 points accruing taking them within nine points of leaders Sale.

Sale meanwhile, emerged with 14 points from a thrilling level-scores draw on the Little Budworth ground of challengers Oulton Park after posting 220, Chris Canning 60, Ryan Rickelton 38, Iro De Silva 3-52, Guy Emmett 3-63. Oulton wound up with 220-8 when tail-ender Andy Mills was run out by Tyrone Lawrence off the final ball, the last of four run outs. Danny Leech scored 47, Iro De Silva 39 and Martin East 31. Third-placed Oulton take 16 points under match regulations which means they still trail Sale by 27 points with four games remaining.

Weaverham are up fourth after beating Cheadle Hulme at Grove Park. Weaverham compiled 197, Kevin Waterhouse 60, Matt Jamieson 51, Muhammed Ali 5-36. ‘Hulme were then bowled out for 108, Richard Battye 45, Wilden Cornwall 4-24.

Davenham beat Christleton by 89 runs at Butcher’s Stile after posting 197, Phil Sharples contributing a key 51 not out at number eight, Zaigum Abbas 3-80. Christleton crumbled to 62 all out, Atif Bajwa 25, the other 10 batsmen being dismissed for single figures against the fine bowling of Robin Taylor 7-34.

Renwick limps back to NZ

Christleton look like departing Division One now they are without the services of star Kiwi batsman Mitch Renwick, who has returned home a month early for treatment to a torn hamstring. Renwick was worth watching while he lasted, scoring 829 runs including four centuries, at an average of over 90. Can he come back next year?

Marc Debrabender carried his bat for a stubborn 69 through Oxton’s innings of 166-6 against Didsbury at Townfield Lane. This proved 89 runs too many for their Manchester visitors, all out for 77, to which Matt Marfani contributed 35, all the others failing against the speed and accuracy of Sri Lanka paceman Gayan Fernando who is enjoying such a fine season. He had figures of 17.4-5-45-8, up there with the best individual performances of the summer.

Tattenhall continued their upward trend with a 69-runs home win against erratic Urmston after posting 144. Urmston were all out for 75, Phil Johnson taking 5-45.

Bolly end Warrington run . . .. Irby relegated

BOLLINGTON not only inflicted the first defeat of the season on Warrington, but moved 11 points clear at the top of the Second Division with a notable nine wickets win at Walton Lea .

Warrington put up the season’s lowest divisional score when they were bowled for 69 by Muhammed Jahangir with 6-34 and Stuart Plant 3-11. Bolly coasted home with 70-1 led by skipper Rick Hough with an unbeaten 30.

Mobberley stepped up their challenge in third place with a 64 runs victory which ended Alvanley’s revival. Former Lancashire batsman Nathan Wood top-scored with 88 for Mobberley, receiving good support from Mark Goodstadt, 60 not out in a tally of 248-5. Alvanley were all out for 184, Stephen Charles 35, Charlie Nield 4-46, the consistent Abdul Aqeel 4-68.

Upton’s challenge was again checked when they wound up with a 13 – 5 draw at home to Congleton. Upton declared after 48 overs on 172-5, John Williams carrying his bat for 102 and Simon Cardall claiming 5-68. Congleton clung on at 158-9, Max O’Sullivan scoring 32, while David Williams took 4-41 and Ben Cant 3-15.

No escape …

Irby gave a spirited performance to bank 10 points in a home defeat by Widnes, but cannot now escape relegation for the first time since joining the league in 2001. They have 103 points with four games (and a maximum 100 points available) and are currently 107 behind 10th placed Alvanley. Dave Newman hit an unbeaten 83 in Irby’s 201-6, James Menzies 5-66, Widnes replied with 204-5, Luke McCoy 86.

Bredbury St. Mark’s look virtually certain to join Irby in the TACS League after losing their 12th game, by 42 runs at home to Northwich who scored 163 batting first, Chamindu Ishanka 43, Chris Nuttall 5-36. Bredbury were bowled out for 121, Darren Carr 61.

Stockport beat a fading Brooklands by 19 runs at Cale Green after scoring 179-8, Roscoe Price Moor 51, Mike Eley 40 not out, A.J. Hart 3-31, Caleb Jones 3-43. Brooklands mustered 160 after tea, Jack Bagshaw‘s splendid innings of 89 standing out against Mark Green 5-69.

reach National t20 finals at Cardiff

CHESTER Boughton Hall reached the NatWest National Club T20 finals for the second season running when they trounced the Liverpool Competition’s top team Ormskirk by nine wickets on their own Brook Lane ground on Sunday.

Aggressive captaincy by Chester’s Lee Dixon, aided by tight bowling and athletic fielding - as has become the team’s well-drilled mode in T20 cricket - restricted Ormskirk to a modest 132-8 off their 20 overs, Rick Moore enjoying the best figures with 3-21.

Chester got off to a cracking reply with 12 off the first over and never released their grip, closing after 13.5 overs on 135-1, thanks to openers Warren Goodwin, who scored a whiplash 65 and Ollie Law, 54 not out.

Chester and their delighted, long-travelling fans, who followed the club round the country last season to win the National final against Ashtead at Northampton, now go through to another National Finals Day. Umpires Quiz by Alistair Davies

LAST WEEK: The front foot of a bowler, delivering right arm over the wicket, lands beyond the middle stump at that end. The ball is then delivered. What action should be taken?

ANSWER: If some part of the right arm over bowler’s front foot, in the delivery stride, does not land, whether grounded or raised, to the left-hand side of an imaginary line joining the two middle stumps, then the delivery should be called and signalled No Ball. Law 24.5 (b) (i).

THIS WEEK’S POSER: A fast, short-pitched delivery hits the striker’s shoulder, then his helmet and crosses the boundary line without pitching within the field of play. What should the umpire do?
