From the Pastor:

A New Catechism?

Over the last few months we have been looking at the Six Chief Parts of the Small Catechism. When you think back to Confirmation Class, those six parts (10 Commandments, Creed, Lord's Prayer, Baptism, The Lord's Supper, Office of the Keys), are just what is included in "Section 1". There are three other small sections that Martin Luther included as well. The Second Section is the Daily Prayers. These include prayers for the morning and evening, as well as prayers for before and after eating. The Third Section is the Table of Duties, where Luther uses passages from the Bible that directly related to our lives in our different vocations (e.g., fathers, citizens, hearers of the word, etc.). The Fourth Section is titled "Christian Questions with Their Answers" and includes Twenty Questions to ask ourselves before we come to the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

All of this is included in the first few pages of what you might think of as "Luther's Small Catechism", but this doesn't even include what is called the "Explanation" which is what you might remember as all the questions and answers along with Scripture references that are included in the hundreds of pages that follow the actual text that Luther wrote. This "explanation" has been changed over the years of our Synod. As times change, more questions and resources have been added as well.

At the 2013 Synodical Convention a new explanation was requested. As Rev. Paul McCain writes, "During its 2013 convention, The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod directed its Commission on Theology and Church Relations to prepare a new explanation with the concurrence of the President of the Synod and the support of Concordia Publishing House. The necessity for this new expanded and improved explanation was underlined by the Synod when it noted that such an effort was necessary due to `the many changes in the understanding of morals, and civil and natural law in both the church and society.'"

This new Explanation was published at the end of 2017. One of the major changes is that the new version was crafted in a way that makes it much more "devotional" in its structure, and even has some basic discussion questions for individuals, groups and families to use in their reading. Here is how Concordia Publishing House explains this:

This new edition of the Small Catechism and Explanation is a remarkable aid for our lives in the world at this time. It would be wonderful for each family to have a copy for their own use. Because of this, our Board of Parish Education has applied for a grant (and received it) from both Thrivent and our Trinity Endowment to purchase around 100 copies of this resource for our congregation to give to families.

On May 6th, during the regular Bible Study hour, we will be giving these books to those who come to Bible Study (one per household) and also taking time to look at it together, to highlight the different sections and to teach how to use this resource in our lives. While many of our students at Trinity have the older (1991) edition, we will be transitioning to using this new catechism in the next year, so this is also a great opportunity for our families to come and learn about it and also receive a copy for their children to use in school and confirmation class. If you have any questions, please contact me, or Connie Ackerman (Chair of the Board of Parish Education).

FUN FACTS ABOUT MAY:

It is the third and last month of the season of spring. The birthstone of May, the emerald, symbolizes success and love. May in the Northern Hemisphere is similar to November in the Southern Hemi-

sphere. May was once considered a bad luck month to get married. There is a poem that

says "Marry in May and you'll rue the day". In Old English May is called the "month of three milkings" referring to a time when

the cows could be milked three times a day. The Indianapolis 500 car race is held each year during this month. The Kentucky

Derby, the world's most famous horse race, is also held on the second Saturday of this month. The month of May is devoted to the Virgin Mary in the Catholic Church. * The United Kingdom celebrates May as National Smile Month. * The last week of May is Library and Information Week.

THANK YOU

A Grateful Thank You Thank you members of Trinity for your prayers before, during, and after my recent cancer surgery at Henry Ford Hospital. God has answered those prayers, as the prognosis is very positive, maybe some future treatments. A special thank you to Pastor Burhop, Pastor Hakes and Mr. Ron Keup for their prayers and visits to my home during this long ordeal. I read a very special quote after my surgery, "Remember doctors treat, but only God can heal." Isn't that so true! God's healing hand has truly blessed me today and may he always bless you also. I am very grateful for His gifts of love and healing. Yours in Christ Tim H. Kaul
