CAUTION

The self-adjusting feature of this parking brake lever assembly contains a clock spring loaded to approximately 8 pounds (35 N).

Care must be taken to prevent excessive jarring of the assembly. Do NOT release the self-adjuster lockout device before installing

cables into the equalizer. Keep hands out of the self-adjuster sector and pawl area. Failure to observe this warning in handling

this mechanism could lead to serious injury. When repairs to the foot lever assembly or front cable are required the self-adjuster

must be reloaded and locked out.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Disarm the air bag system.

CAUTION

The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the steering column. Failure to do so may

cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

3. The driver's seat assembly must be removed from the vehicle. Use the following procedure:

1. Position the front seat far enough forward to gain access to the front mounting bolts on the floor. Remove the bolts.

2. Disengage the front seat wiring harness connector from the body connector.

3. Remove the bolts securing the front of the seat track to the floor.

4. Remove the bolts securing the rear of the seat track to the floor.

5. Separate and remove the seat from the vehicle.

3. On vehicles equipped with bucket seats:

1. Remove the shifter knob from the shift lever by removing the 3/32-inch Allen® head setscrew located on the driver side of the knob and pulling the knob straight up.

2. Remove the center console ashtray and remove the center console bezel retaining screw.

3. Disengage the holding clips of the center console bezel and remove the bezel from the console.

4. Remove the mounting screw that holds the forward crossmember to the floor mounting bracket.

5. Remove the rear mounting bracket screw located at the bottom of the glove compartment.

6. Remove the center console from the vehicle.

7. Remove the rear mounting bracket, for the center console, from the reaction bracket of the parking brake cable.

8. Remove the heat duct for the rear passenger compartment.

3. On vehicles equipped with bench seat:

1. Pull the lower rear seat cushion upward at each end of the cushion to release the loops from the cups in the floor.

2. Remove the rear seat cushion from the vehicle.

3. Remove the lower rear door opening sill moldings on both sides of the vehicle and fold the carpeting out of the way of the parking brake cable.

4. Remove the equalizer cover from the reaction bracket.

3. Remove the driver's side door opening sill molding. Remove the driver's side cowl kick molding to expose the parking brake pedal mechanism.

7. Remove the throttle pedal and bracket from the dash panel and fold the carpet back to expose the front brake cable, routing clips, reaction bracket and equalizer.

CAUTION

The parking brake pedal mechanism self-adjuster must be reloaded and locked, to remove spring tension, before attempting to remove

the front parking brake cable from the parking brake pedal or equalizer. Failure to do so will make assembly extremely difficult

and could lead to serious injury.

8. Reload the parking brake self-adjuster assembly as follows:

1. Insert a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and extension into the hole located in the sector part of the parking brake pedal mechanism.

2. Pull on the ratchet and extension rotating the sector toward the rear of the vehicle until the ratchet extension contacts the back of the brake pedal mechanism. This will wind the sector spring.

3. Insert a pin or drill bit 1/8-inch diameter by at least two inches long into the parking brake lever mechanism to lock the sector shaft in place. Make sure the pin or drill bit is long enough to go through both sides of the parking brake lever mechanism.

8. Remove the front parking brake cable from the parking brake cable equalizer. Remove the retaining clip from the cable at the reaction bracket.

9. Remove the front parking brake cable from the reacting bracket. Remove the screw attaching the parking brake cable routing clip to the floorpan. Remove the parking brake cable from the mounting clips at the crossmember.

10. Remove the bolt attaching the parking brake mechanism to the left front door frame. Loosen but do NOT remove the two bolts attaching the mechanism to the cowl panel. Detach the electrical connector from the switch on the parking brake mechanism.

11. Remove the parking brake mechanism and the front cable from the vehicle as an assembly.

12. Mount the parking brake assembly in a vise and remove the front parking brake cable-to-mechanism retainer clip.

13. Rotate the cable to align with the notch in the cable attaching hole on the parking brake mechanism. Lift the lead of the cable out of the retaining hole in the parking brake mechanism, then remove the cable from the mechanism.

To install:

15. Install the parking brake cable into the parking brake mechanism and rotate into position. Be sure cable is properly seated in the cam surface tract of the foot lever assembly. Install the cable retaining clip.

16. Install the parking brake mechanism to the two loosely installed mounting bolts on the cowl panel. Install the retainer bolt into the door frame. Tighten the three mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

17. Reattach the brake warning light connector to the switch.

18. Route the cable along the floor of the vehicle. Install the end of the cable into the hole in the reaction bracket and install retainer clip. Tap the clip with a hammer until fully seated on the cable. Install the front cable to the equalizer.

19. Install all parking brake cable routing clips and retainers. Tighten the routing clip-to-floorpan mounting screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

20. Ensure the cable is correctly routed in cam surface tract of the parking brake mechanism. Using pliers, firmly grasp the lockpin previously installed in the park brake mechanism. Remove the lockpin using a firm and rapid pull. When removed, the parking brake cables will automatically adjust. Activate and release the parking brake mechanism to assure proper operation.

21. Place the carpeting, in the left front of the vehicle, back into its proper position. Install the throttle pedal and bracket back onto the dash panel studs and tighten the mounting nuts.

22. Install the driver's side cowl kick molding and driver's side door opening sill molding.

23. On vehicles equipped with bucket seats:

1. Install the console heat duct and rear console mounting bracket. Tighten the rear console mounting bracket bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

2. Install the center console assembly into position.

3. Install the mounting screws that hold the bottom of the glove compartment to the rear mounting bracket and the mounting screw that holds the forward crossmember to the floor mounting bracket.

4. Install the center console bezel and ashtray.

5. Install the shift knob onto the shift lever.

15. On vehicles equipped with bench seat:

1. Install the parking brake equalizer cover back on the reaction bracket. Tighten the equalizer cover mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

2. Place the rear carpeting back to its original position inside the vehicle.

3. Install the lower rear door sill moldings for both sides of the vehicle.

4. Install the rear seat cushion into the vehicle and engage the retainer loops into the retainer cup on the floor. Engage the retainers by pushing downward at each end of the rear seat.

15. Install the left front seat into the vehicle and bolt the rear of the tract to the floor.

16. Install bolts to hold front of the seat tract to the floor.

17. Reattach the front seat wire connector to the body connector.

18. Test the left front seat for proper operation.

19. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Adjust the rear brakes, if necessary, then adjust the parking brake.
