READING (40 points)

Read the article and answer the questions that follow.

|I |Noam Gershony: The Exceptional Optimist |

| |Some people know how to turn tragedy into success. Noam Gershony is one of those people. In 2006, 23-year-old Noam was a pilot in |

| |the Israeli Air Force when he was badly hurt in a helicopter accident. At the time, doctors didn’t think he would survive. But Noam|

| |did survive, and he became the first Israeli to win a gold medal in the Paralympics in 2012. |

|II |Immediately after the accident Noam was in critical condition*. Most of the bones in his body were broken, and he couldn’t move his|

| |arms or legs. He was in the hospital for six months before he could go home. Then he started going to therapy, and, gradually, he |

| |got physically and mentally stronger. He decided that he would not let his handicap stop him from living an active life. |

| |Although he was in a wheelchair, Noam was looking for a sports activity he could do. Four years after the crash, he rediscovered |

|III |tennis. Noam had to learn how to use a tennis racket while zooming around in his wheelchair. He invested a lot of time and effort, |

| |and by 2010, he was competing in international competitions. |

| |In 2012, Noam was ready for the Paralympic Games in London. Never in a million years did he expect to win, but his family and |

| |friends were there to cheer him on, and much to his surprise he won. On receiving the gold medal, he united the whole country when |

|IV |he said, “The greatest honor you can achieve as an athlete is representing your country.” |

| |Today, Noam is a role model to us all. He currently travels around the world giving inspirational talks to students. He captivates |

| |them with his simple message, “There’s no reason to give up on one’s dreams and all our options are open.” |
