GED prep classes, free materials, free tutoring, and free childcare during evening classes. Class times are Tues. and Thurs. 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., 6p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Wednesday 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A tutoring component is also available for youth.

Sixteen and seventeen year old students can enroll in GED preparation classes, but can take the GED test only with permission from the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. The process for the approval takes about two weeks. They must have a withdrawal from their prior school and they must be accompanied by a parent. Eighteen year old students must present a high school withdrawal form when registering for classes or the GED Test. Contact Cobb County Adult Ed (678 59408011 ext. 247) to obtain information on registration and open enrollment dates. No appointments or test scheduling will be done over the phone. 16 and 17 year old must take the GED pre-test.

Go to for more information. There are no required courses to make a student eligible for the GED. They just must be able to pass five sections: social studies, science, math, language arts writing, and language arts reading. GED test takers can retest in the failed subject areas. FREE GED study classes are offered.

Cobb Virtual Academy

This program allows students to take on-line classes (core classes only) while enrolled in a traditional high school setting. Intended for both credit recovery and first time course takers. Students can take some online courses for free while enrolled in a Cobb County School.

FAITH ACADEMY

SACS accredited high school with a non-traditional approach. Students come one day a week to take tests and pick up assignments. Students must be at least 16 to participate. Campuses are located in Loganville, Stockbridge (678 289-3330), Conyers, Locust Grove, and Buford. Program fee is $40.00 per week.

Georgia Virtual High School



A program offered by the State Dept. of Education. Offers full high school curriculum. Intended for both credit recovery and first time course takers. Students can take some online courses for free while enrolled in a Cobb County School.

GED

Offers those 16 and older a setting to pursue a GED. Free GED prep classes. Students must pass five tests; Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9am-12pm and 6-9pm. In order to use this service, there is an income limit for the family. Student income can be used to determine eligibility but family cannot claim as a dependent (only if age18). Program offers a GED or high school diploma and job skills training and will assist with finding work. Most programs are dorm living, with food, housing, and health paid for, plus a small living allowance (The Atlanta program does not offer dorm living for males). There are three programs in the state of Georgia. Participants could be placed out of state. With achievements, cash bonuses are given. Participants can’t have felony charges and must be drug free.

Students participate in a compressed class day, allowing them time for family and/or work responsibilities. Students work in small classroom settings and collaborate on group projects and learning activities led by Georgia certified teachers. Students participate in community service projects and required volunteer and/or work study hours. Students are assigned to one of three sessions that are held daily: Session 1 (7:00-10:00), Session 2 (10:30-1:30), or Session 3 (2:00-5:00). Students must provide their own transportation. Pre-enrollment interviews are granted on a first come, first serve basis unless there is a waiting list.

This program pays for students to obtain a GED and work readiness training. Students must be 17-21 and income eligible. Students are placed in a four week accelerated tutorial program, and then attend one week of work readiness instruction. Testing fees are covered and students are paid for attendance. Cobb County School’s Performance Learning Center provides a self-paced computer based curriculum learning environment for students to assist them with recovering credit and graduating. This program connects students with community mentors and opportunities for internships. Class begins at 8:30 and ends at 1:30. Students may remain at school for tutoring and additional class work until 4:00. If a student passes two courses each Mini-mester, he or she will earn 8 credits. It is possible to earn more if a student chooses to complete work faster than required. There is a $25.00 activity fee and a $60.00 refundable book fee. Applications can be obtained in person or from their website.

YOUTH BUILD

HUD’s Youth Build Program offers job training and leadership skills to young people, ages 16-24, while putting them back on a path toward graduation. Program participants receive on the job training in the building trades and help build and renovate homes that are sold at affordable prices to low and very low income persons as well as to families and individuals experiencing homelessness. This ten month program provides a limited allowance.
