Year 2 Activities Week Beginning 22.6.20Literacy (please remember to use a ruler to rule lines for all writing activities and ask your child to write the long date) Watch the story on You Tube of ‘Barnaby Bear goes to the seaside’. Talk about this story with your child and then ask questions to develop comprehension and talking and listening skills. Make use of question words – Did? How? Who? Can? Where? Why? Do? What? When? Which? For eg: Where did Barnaby go on his holidays? Can you name 5 things that Barnaby packed in his suitcase? What colours are displayed on the flag when it is safe to swim? etc Complete Barnaby Bear work based on this story into your book and draw a picture of Barnaby Bear at the seaside. Read your sentences when you have put the words in the correct order.Tigers – 5 Mixed up sentences Monkeys – 4 Mixed up sentences Bears – 2 Mixed up sentencesWhy not listen to another summer story ‘Pete the cat and his magic sunglasses’ on You Tube.Story Writing – Discuss with your child all about the different things that happened in Year 2 during the year and what he/she learned. Then use ‘All about me in Year 2’ sheet to write as many sentences as you can. You can continue on the back if needed. Begin your piece of writing with the line ‘In Year 2 I did lots of work’. You can then begin your other sentences using the words ‘I learned / I enjoyed / I liked / I loved / I can now / I feel / I am better at / We / My favourite thing. Remember to begin your sentences with different words. Also remember to call out the COPS! C – capital letters at the start of a sentence or for names of people or places O – order of words P – punctuation like full stops at the end of a sentence S – spaces between words and spelling of words Don’t forget to draw a picture in the box provided and colour it. Complete the Mental Maths Revision Year 2 Sheet found in the folder. How did you find this work? Draw a traffic light and colour it. Tell Mum if you found anything hard or difficult to understand and she will talk you through how to do it.Bears – Introduce oral subtraction word problems to your child eg There are 8 birds sitting on a tree. 3 birds fly away. How many birds are left on the tree? Get your child to work it out by drawing the 8 birds and then crossing out the 3 birds that flew away. Can they say the number sentence and then write it down? Ask the question again how many birds are left on the tree? Get your child to respond by saying the answer - 5 birds. Discuss another problem worded in a different way. Tom has 9 marbles. He has 2 more than Ethan. How many marbles does Ethan have? Make up some more problems for your child to solve. Complete subtraction problems to 10 worksheet. See folder for ‘3D Shapes Sandcastle Playdough mats and recipes’. Have fun making your 3D shaped sandcastles!Other activitiesWAU Science experiments – Shadows – Find some shadows when you are out and about on your daily walk. Can you change your body shape to make your shadow look like something else? Place your favourite toy on a piece of paper and move it around in the garden until you get a shadow on the paper. Then you can trace round it.Frozen in Ice – For a fun way to prompt discussion around changing states freeze household items. Freeze 5 things in ice [whatever you fancy..Lego characters are quite fun!] and make sure you have all the cubes the same size. On a nice warm day take your 5 ice cubes all the same size with whatever inside them and place them in 5 different spots around your house or garden, some in the sunshine and some in the shade. Predict which character will be freed first! Look at what happens and see which one comes free first and how long it takes. Were you right?View Powerpoint ‘All about Sun Awareness’ and discuss each slide with your child. Be sun safe this summer and remember to ‘Slip, Slap, Slop’.
