Mrs. Engebretson’s News61912525273000KindergartenThe students are learning the letters from the Jolly Phonics Program. They have been using the actions to remember the sounds. The students have learned the following letters: S s, A a, T t, I I, P p, N n, C c, and K k. Please have your child review these letters and sounds at home. You can also ask them to identify the letters when they see them in their environment. Reading to your child on a daily basis is a great way to promote literacy in your home. After you read the story, ask your child questions about the text. Once they are familiar with the story, they can read with you too! The sight words the students have reviewed include: can, here, is, like, my, the and with. They have read a variety of fiction and nonfiction books about making new friends and farm animals. The strategy the students have been working on is asking and answering questions about important details in the text, which is from the CCSS.ELA – Literacy.RL.1.1 (Common Core State Standards). When bringing the book home, your child should read aloud and silently. Please ask your child about the information he or she learned. _______________________________________Second GradeDuring the past couple of weeks the students have read the fiction book, Chicken Little and the nonfiction book, Meli at the Pet Shop. After reading Chicken Little, the students learned a lesson about how important it is to have evidence before believing what somebody else thinks. The students wrote about the lesson they learned, which is part of CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL2.2. In the book about Meli, the students discussed the who, what, where, when, why and how in the text, which is part of CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI2.1. 58102515875000Third GradeStudents had the opportunity to read two different books about a real dog named Meli. The students had to identify two parts in the text that were similar, and why those parts were important. For example, the part about ______________ in The Problem with Meli reminds me of the part about _______________ in Taking Care of Meli. These parts were alike because they both explained how important exercise is to Meli. Students are encouraged to make relevant connections to other books, which is part of CCSS ELA-Literacy.RI3.9. They are encouraged to read at home and use their reading strategies to decode the words. Reading Strategies for Decoding Words(From )Eagle Eye –Look at the pictures for clues.Lips the Fish – Get your mouth ready to say the first sounds.Stretchy Snake – Stretch the word out by blending the sounds together.Flippy Dolphin – Flip the vowel and try the other sound.Chunky Monkey – Look for word parts.Skippy Frog – Read to the end of the sentence.? Hop back and read the word.Tryin’ Lion – Try to reread the word again.Helpful Kangaroo – Ask for help after you have tried the other strategies.? Fourth GradeAnother important component to reading is understanding the key elements in a story. The students completed a graphic organizer for the fiction story “Good Boy”, which is part of CCSS. ELA – Literacy.RL4.2 and 4.3. The students identified the characters, setting, plot (events in the story), conflict and resolution. They summarized the text in a few sentences by retelling the major events. In addition, the students read a passage about “Wind: helpful or harmful”. They had to identify the topic, two main ideas and supporting details. During the past week, the students read the book, Calling Dr. Carson. This is an inspirational biography that describes how important it is to have goals in life and a plan to achieve your dreams. Fifth GradeAs we read, we acknowledge the various text features in the book such as headings, photographs, captions, maps, graphs, fact boxes, colored print and a glossary to help us understand the text. Each text feature has a purpose, and the students are learning why those features are important as they read. One of the books they read this week is Growing a Giant. The students have analyzed each heading in the book, and identified the main idea and details in the book, which is part of CCSS.ELA – Literacy.RI5.2. I suggest they continue to read the books I send home, and return those books every Monday. Literacy Resources: ................
