10th Grade MYP/IB Language Arts: 2016-2017

MYP Level 5

I. Students will continue to develop their ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum using the Areas of Interaction within the IB learner profile. This course will integrate reading, writing, and speaking with a variety of genres. It is important to realize the following:

1. Class participation in both small and large group discussion is paramount.

2. Students must have a PHYSICAL COPY OF THE TEXT. E-books do not allow the students to write marginalia or highlight. Most novels are available from upper IB classmates, used on Amazon, or bookstores.

3. Homework: The assigned novel, studying vocabulary, and any other tasks.

4. Students will read plays in class.

5. MYP classes do not analyze an assigned book chapter by chapter; we analyze it after the entire work is read.

6. MYP students are required to complete their Personal Project in addition to their regular language arts assignments

II. Students will meet both California Common core standards and MYP objectives and standards.

OBJECTIVES Students will continue to learn both analytical and creative writing techniques, in addition to learning the features of literature. Students will also learn how to take risks and experiment with creative pieces.

III. The areas of interaction will be addressed and reflected upon through the individual units and through the personal project.

Academic Honesty

Student name ( print ) date

Academic Honesty: Some students cheat on assignments. This is a seriously problem! Cheating can include copying from another student’s work or plagiarizing from any source, including published study guides and the Internet. Students who do cheat will receive a zero on that assignment and will be referred to Mrs. Rasmussen for appropriate discipline according to I.B. standards. While grades are important, parents and students need to realize that the learning and maintaining of one’s integrity are more important. Teachers are asked to comment on a student’s integrity when writing recommendations for colleges and scholarships, so it is in your best interests to avoid cheating. The following definition of plagiarism from Hodges’ Harbrace Handbook- 15th edition may prove helpful to you: “plagiarism: The use of another writer’s words or ideas without acknowledging the source.”

Discipline: We adhere to the schools assertive discipline policy concerning tardiness, behavior, and attendance.

Attendance: Daily attendance is important and expected. Students who have unexcused absences (vacations, etc.) must turn in assignments on the due date Students who are not in class due to a school activity are still expected to make arrangements to have assignments turned in on time. Excused absences are allowed one day of make-up for every day absent.

The MYP/IB Diploma is an internationally recognized pre-university qualification that is accepted in over sixty countries. To gain a MYP/IB diploma, students must successfully complete six separate courses covering a range of academic disciplines. The disciplines covered are Literature, Second/Foreign Language, Humanities, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Mrs. Rasmussen is Centennial’s IB coordinator and will address any concerns you may have.
