Job was a father who was a pious man before His childrenJob 1:1–2 - There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 1. The definition - Blameless (Hebrew “tam”) - innocent, i.e., pertaining to a person or condition of moral goodness, with a focus of being guiltless and not liable for sin or wrong, complete, uniting of two things – His walk and his talk added up- Upright – (Hebrew “yasar”) - What is right, a person who conforms to a moral standard other than one’s own standard, doesn’t make up the rules, obeys the rules that God gave and gives.2. The depthIt is God who labels him blameless - Job 1:8 - And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” (see Job 2:3)3. The duties a. Habitually feared God (Elohim) – (Hebrew “ya’re”) - respect or revere. “The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God you fear everything else.” - Oswald Chambersb. Departed habitually from evil or the evil one (Hebrew “sur”) – wicked, bad evilPsalm 97:10 - O you who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. B. Job was a father who was a prosperous man because of His children Job 1:2–3 - There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 1. Job’s wealth is measured first by his kids- Psalm 127:3–5 - Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. Job 3:25 - For the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. 2. Job’s wealth is measured second by his estate – See Genesis 13:1-77000 sheep300 camels500 yoke of oxen500 female donkeysVery many servants3. Job’s wealth is measured thirdly against others - The greatest in the East – see Solomon in 1 Kings 4:30 - He recognized wealth was from God - Job 1:21 - And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Other affirmations of faith - Job 13:15 & Job 23:10C. Job was a father who was a praying man for His childrenJob 1:4-5 - His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually1. He knew their needsa. As a father he knew his children's lives1) He knew where they were – “His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one”2) He knew when they were where they were – “on his day”3) He knew what they did – “and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them”4) He knew how long they did it for – “And when the days of the feast had run their course…”b. As a father he knew His children’s nature - “For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.”2. He went to his kneesa. He did this personally – Jobb. He did this intentionally – He would reach out (“salah”) and consecrate (“qadas”) – dedicate to service to Godc. He did this seriously – “and he would rise early in the morning”d. He did this substitutionaryly - “and offer burnt offerings” – He did it in behalf of them and the actual offering was a substitutee. He did it individually – “according to the number of them all”f. He did it expensively – This was expensive as well as expansive – At least 10 times a yearg. He did it intelligently - For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.”i. He did it persistently – At least 10 times a year, probably year after year - “Thus Job did continually”. ................
