13 reasons why new characters season 4

13 Reasons Why returns to Netflix this June for Season 4, which will be the final instalment of the controversial drama. Netflix has announced the release date for the last season of the show, as well as some new characters who will be part of the Liberty High School graduating class. The creator of 13 Reasons Why has also announced the big plot

points of Season 4, while the trailer gives fans a glimpse of what will happen in the final episodes. When will 13 Reasons Why Season 4 be released? The Netflix release date for Season 4 of 13 Reasons Why is Friday, June 5, when all 10 episodes of the show will be released. As with nearly all Netflix originals, the release time for the episodes will be at

00:00 a.m. PDT (nine hours behind GMT). When the show comes to Netflix in your country will depend on your time zone.Who is in the cast of 13 Reasons Why Season 4?Among some familiar Liberty High faces, Season 4 introduces a number of new characters. These include Diego, a friend of the dead Monty (Timothy Granderos) played by Marvel's

Runaways Jan Luis Castellanos, and Forrest Gump star Gary Sinise as Jensen family therapist Dr Robert Ellman. Dylan Minette returns to lead the cast of '13 Reasons Why' Season 4. Netflix Returning to the show, meanwhile, are:Dylan Minette - Clay JensenBrandon Flynn - Justin FoleyAlisha Boe - Jessica DavisChristian Navarro - Tony PadillaMiles

Heizer - Alex StandallRoss Butler - Zach DempseyDevin Druid - Tyler DownJustin Prentice - Bryce WalkerTimothy Grandos - Monty de la CruzGrace Saif - Ani AcholaDeaken Bluman - Winston Williams What will happen in 13 Reasons Why Season 4?The official Netflix plot summary reads: "In the series' final season, Liberty High School's Senior Class

prepares for graduation. But before they say goodbye, they'll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that might alter their lives forever."Showrunner Brian Yorkey, meanwhile, hinted that 13 Reasons Why Season 4 will not have its own new mystery but will instead follow on from the events of the prior season. In those

episodes, (spoiler alert) we saw the murder of Bryce pinned on Monty despite the late character having an alibi. Yorkey said to Entertainment Weekly: "Certainly we saw at the end of season 3 that Winston can alibi Monty and is upset at the way Monty was used by these kids to, in his mind, get away with murder, so Winston is certainly going to be a

significant factor in season 4. "Also, there are other people in Evergreen County, such as Sheriff Diaz, who will certainly become aware of the guns that get dredged up by the fishermen and that will make him curious and he will follow that trail. There are a number of other people who are wondering if the story that got told is really the true story, so

they will be putting pressure on our kids and there will be the threat that the secret will come out."This is something teased right from the start of the trailer for 13 Reasons Why Season 4, which begins with the cast discovering that someone has written "Monty was framed" on the door of the school.13 Reasons Why Season 4 is released on Netflix on

Friday, June 5 Netflix13 Reasons Why is set to introduce a new character in season 4. The new character will be a therapist named Dr. Robert Ellman played by Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise. Dr. Ellman will help Clay battle his anxiety, depression and grief. Though some fans didn't take too kindly to her, season 3 of 13 Reasons Why introduced a

new character that helped unravel Bryce Walker's full story leading up to his murder. Ani, played by actress Grace Saif, first appeared in season 3 as a new student at Liberty High, who's on a quest to find Bryce Walker's murderer and somehow gets tangled up in all the kids' drama. Some trolls flooded Grace's social media feeds to express their

strong dislike of Ani, but the comments on the actress's personal accounts allegedly caused her to make her Twitter private and delete all her Instagram photos. Now season 4 is also set to introduce a new character, except this time, the character will help us get to know Clay a little better. The character, Dr. Robert Ellman, will be played by actor

Gary Sinise, known for his role in the classic movie, Forrest Gump. Dr. Ellman's role in season 4 will be to help Clay deal with all his emotions. According to Netflix, Dr. Ellman as a no-nonsense therapist set to guide Clay as he deals with anxiety, depression and grief. For the show's creator, Brian Yorkey, it was a dream to cast Gary. "A consummate

actor and first-rate human, Gary brings the exact combination of toughness, smarts, and heart the character needs. We're all thrilled and honored to have him join us for this pivotal role in our final season. But Brian said that he originally thought casting Gary wasn't even an option. "From the first moments we conceived of the role, I thought of Gary

Sinise, but hardly dared to dream it might happen."Though a release date hasn't been announced, 13 Reasons Why is set to return for a fourth and final reason and filming has already started. Season 4 will probably wrap up the students' journeys on the show as they prepare for graduation. Jasmine GomezAssociate Lifestyle editorJasmine Gomez is

their problems are not yet over. There are flaws in their stories that will require clarification. He has made mistakes that will come back to haunt him. The setting for season 4 of *13 Reasons Why &is set by two events."[8] Brian Yorkey stated in an interview that this season would only consist of 10 episodes: "It served the story better, and 10 episodes

ended up being the sweet spot for us. I think 10 episodes is a nice length for a season. I was adamant going into season 2 that it had to be 13 because the show's called 13 Reasons Why and if I'm a young viewer, I'm like, "13 reasons why but there's only 10 episodes." But at this point, heading into season 4 it was like, "We've given them 39 reasons

why (episodes in total) at least, so I feel like we can say, yes the show is still called 13 Reasons Why, this season is 10 episodes." It's the right number, you'll see that when we get to the end."[9] This is the shortest season, having only 10 episodes, whereas all previous seasons contained 13 episodes each. This is the first and only season that doesn't

have an official soundtrack or aftershow. Soundtrack See also: 13 Reasons Why (Soundtrack)#Season 4 Quotes ※ Season 4 is a very different season. Each of the seasons has been unique, but Season 4 is more of a psychological exploration of what happens to friends when they*re forced to keep a secret. What happens to people when their guilt and

their shame starts to eat them from the inside out. Season 3 was a whodunit. Season 2 was the trial. It was about the law and justice. Season 1 was about the mystery surrounding one particular individual. They*ve each had their own unique flavors. Nora Walker may or may not be part of that complexity. I think there*s ample room for her to enter

into it, particularly in terms of Ani, since Ani was part of her household and is the line to Bryce. But we*ll see! I can*t really say how much or how little she*ll be involved. § 〞 Brenda Strong in an interview with Pop-Culturist ※ We wanted to end the series hopefully, but we wanted it to be earned hope. The series was born in darkness and as is often

pointed out, it is a dark series, but we have always tried to infuse it with hope and with humor where we can, and we wanted to end on a note of hope that was earned and that was not forced and also not overly sunny in a way that wouldn't be consistent with what had gone before. The other word that comes to mind, along with hope, is survival

because everything comes after our ability to survive our hardest moments and our ability to keep moving and to stay alive for all the brighter things that life has in store for us. This show started with Hannah Baker not being able to do that, and we wanted to end by seeing so many of our characters able to do that, to face the real darkness, and to

come out the other side into the light. That's what we wanted and I think and hope we achieved that. § 〞 Brian Yorkey about how they wanted the series to end speaking to Entertainment Weekly [9] Gallery Images Videos Saying Goodbye 13 Reasons Why Netflix13 Reasons Why Final Season Official Trailer NetflixAlisha Boe, Ross Butler, and Brandon

filming[9]. They were all given higher salaries just before they started filming.[10] Minnette will be paid somewhere around $200,000 per episode.[10] Prentice, Druid, Boe, Flynn, Navarro, Heizer and Butler will make $135,000 per episode, which will raise to $150,000 per episode if a fourth season happens.[10] On the release date announcement,

Netflix provided viewers with a URL, [11], where you can talk to Deputy Bill Standall about the case, and reveal who you think killed Bryce. You can also unlock this season's Character Portrait of the character you suspect to be the killer. One quote made by Bill during the simulated talk reveals Ani's last name is Achola.[12]

Each episode title comes from one of Ani's lines as the narrator in the episode. However, the title of the fifth episode of the season, "Nobody's Clean", was one of Alex's lines. Diana Son and Brian Yorkey are co-showrunners on the series. Originally

conceived as a film set to be released by Universal Pictures with Selena Gomez in the lead role, the adaptation was picked up as a television series by Netflix in late 2015. Gomez served as an executive producer. The series premiered on March 31, 2017, attracting 6.08 million U.S. viewers in the first three days[1]; and its second season released on

May 18, 2018, (Although the second season is not related to the original book, unlike the first season). In 2018, 13 Reasons Why was the most watched Netflix show[2]. The series was renewed on June 6, 2018, for a third season, which premiered on August 23, 2019.[3] On August 1, 2019, 13 Reasons Why was renewed for a fourth and final season,

which premiered on June 5, 2020.[4] The first season received universal acclaim from critics and audiences, who praised its subject matter and casting. However, the second, third, and fourth seasons' positive reception began to dwindle. Synopsis Based on the best-selling book by Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why follows teenager Clay Jensen as he returns

home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker〞his classmate and crush〞who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he

listens, he*ll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay*s dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heart wrenching story of teenage life that will deeply affect viewers. [5] Plot After 17-year-old Hannah Baker committed suicide by slitting her arms (in the novel she swallows and overdoses on pills), her school locker

becomes a memorial adorned with students' letters and her pictures. Clay Jensen comes home from school to find a shoebox, on his doorstep. It contains 7 audio cassette tapes that contain a recording on each of them on each side of them of Hannah explaining the 13 reasons why she chose to end her life. Hannah warns listeners to follow certain

rules; everyone mentioned on the tapes must listen to the complete set then pass it along to the next person addressed. If they fail to do so, the second set of tapes, held by personal friend Tony Padilla, who is not on the tapes, will be released. As Clay listens to the tapes, on which Hannah narrates the series of events that led to her suicide, he grieves

for the loss of his best friends and crush and secrets come out. Season 1 In the first season 13 Reasons Why follows teenager Clay Jensen as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers a group of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker〞his classmate and crush〞who tragically

committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah unfolds an emotional audio diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect viewers. Hannah Baker serves as the

narrator of this season. Season 2 The second season picks up in the aftermath of Hannah's death and the start of our characters' complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah's death concealed. A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay

and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a big conspiracy to cover it up. Various people serve as the narrators for this season. Season 3 Eight months after preventing Tyler Down from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay Jensen, Tony Padilla, Jessica Davis, Alex Standall, Justin Foley, and Zach Dempsey find ways to

shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move toward recovery. But when the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of their classmate, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it*s up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare

everyone*s deepest secrets. The stakes are raised in this riveting third season of *13 Reasons Why,* as the consequences of even the most well-intended actions can alter a life forever. Ani Achola serves as the narrator for this season. Season 4 In the series' final season, Liberty High School's Senior Class prepares for graduation. But before they say

goodbye, they'll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever. Clay Jensen serves as the narrator for this season. Main Cast Hannah's Thirteen Reasons Why Her first reason is Justin Foley, she kisses him in the park每her first kiss每and he takes an upskirt photo of her. Justin shares it with

his friends, including Bryce Walker, who gets ahold of it and spreads it around school, Justin does nothing about it and from then on, seems to not care about Hannah. Clay remembers telling Hannah "it's better to wait" she understands that he believes the rumors and walks away. Clay, who was secretly in love with Hannah, spends the first season

reminiscing about the time he spent with her. He finds listening to Hannah's story difficult, but Tony repeatedly finds him and helps him through it but also warns Clay things will go wrong if he does not obey the rules. Hannah's second reason is Jessica Davis, who becomes friends with Hannah after being paired up with her, they stay friends and

meet Alex Standall who becomes a part of their group, they disband and Jess and Alex start dating. Jess refuses to have sex with Alex and he contributes to a list to anger her, giving Hannah the label of "Best Ass" and Jess the label "Worst Ass". Jessica becomes angry because she believes Hannah broke them up. She calls her a slut, Hannah says

"Fuck you", Jessica replies by slapping her, leaving a mark. Hannah's third reason is Alex Standall, after he contributes to the list, things spiral out of control for Hannah, she is labelled 'Hannah the Slut' and guys start to treat her as a sexual object instead of a human being. Bryce Walker decides to take things further, he offers to buy Hannah candy

and as he is handing it to her, he reaches over and grabs her ass. Smugly stating that Alex was right about "Best Ass". Hannah doesn't move until Bryce leaves. She runs out of the store and begins to cry. She tells Alex over the tapes "You made it open season on Hannah Baker." Hannah's fourth reason is Tyler Down, he is the school photographer. He

began taking photographs of Hannah outside of her house without her consent. Hannah heard the clicks of his camera all the time and became increasingly scared. She tells Courtney Crimsen who offers her help. They have a sleepover, play a game of truth or dare that ends with Courtney and Hannah kissing and catch her stalker, they both find out

it's Tyler Down, Courtney leaves quickly after learning that it wasn't a stranger but someone at their school who caught them on camera. Hannah asks Tyler to destroy the photos, who agrees. He asks Hannah if they can hangout, but she says no. He becomes angry and spreads the photo around school instead. Courtney stops being her friend because

she doesn't want to be seen with her. Hannah's fifth reason is Courtney Crimsen. After Tyler spreads the photo and Courtney says she doesn't want to be seen with her, they reconcile. Courtney and Hannah go to the Winter Formal and Montgomery de la Cruz questions Courtney over the photo Tyler took of them. Courtney becomes so afraid that she

gives him made up details about Hannah's sex life. Telling him that Hannah asked for a three way between her and Laura, a known lesbian at school and that she let Justin finger her in the park and gave him a blowjob. Montgomery confronts Hannah over this in front of Clay. Hannah finds Courtney, who tells her people were starting to talk and she

had to do something. Hannah tells her that she doesn't get to mess with her life because she is scared of people finding out about her sexuality. Courtney and Hannah end their friendship. Hannah's sixth reason is Marcus Cole. He is paired up with Hannah by a mutual friend for Dollar Valentine, a match-making charity event. They go to Rosie's Diner每

or at least Hannah goes. Marcus shows up an hour late and with some of his friends on the football team. Hannah is angry, and is even more upset when Marcus, without her consent, starts to feel her up after sneakily glancing at his friends, she knows he is doing it for them, and asks him to stop, he ignores her and she forces him off by pushing him.

He gets up and says that he thought she'd be easy. He leaves with his friends and Hannah is left alone, embarrassed. Zach Dempsey is the only one who hesitates and stays with her. Hannah's seventh reason is Zach Dempsey. After he stays with her, he tries to cheer up but fails. In class the students are given compliment bags. Hannah gets one

almost every day, and checks every day. Zach, however, doesn't get any telling her "it's kind of soul-crushing, you know?". Zach becomes jealous and starts to take from Hannah's bag before she can check it. Hannah catches onto this and leaves him a note about why she needs the compliments and talks about the negative things going on in her life.

Zach takes the note and reads it. Hannah says he dropped it on the floor, after seeing this, she shouts "Why me?". She believed Zach was a nice guy until this. Hannah's eighth reason is Ryan Shaver. He is a poet who publishes a magazine called Lost and Found. He helps Hannah write poems and one day, takes one without her consent. He publishes

it, also without her consent, in his magazine. The next day everyone is reading it, to Hannah's surprise. Hannah becomes angry and upset because her personal thoughts and feelings were published without her consent. She finds Ryan and asks why he did it. Ryan tells her that some day she will thank him. Hannah becomes angry and leaves.

Hannah's ninth reason is Justin Foley, again. Jessica Davis throws a back to school party. She attends this although she wasn't very keen on going. Hannah ends up in Jessica's room (after the eleventh reason), hiding near Jessica's bed. Justin and Jessica come in, kissing, Jessica is drunk and almost as soon as she gets on her own bed she passes out

and sleeps. Justin leaves after trying to wake her up for sex and sees his friend, Bryce outside the door, Bryce and Justin have an altercation before Bryce enters Jessica's room to have sex with her. Bryce leans over Jessica and getting ready to take off his pants. Justin bursts into the room and tries to force Bryce off of an unconscious Jessica, Bryce

forces Justin out of the room and locks the door. Bryce gets on top of Jessica after taking off his pants and rapes her. She wakes up at during and asks what he is doing although she doesn't know who is having sex with her. She passes back out, Bryce finishes and leaves. Hannah had moved from hiding near Jessica's bed to hiding in her closet, unable

to move her body to stop Jessica from being raped. When Bryce is gone, Hannah exits the closet and and throws up, she puts a blanket over Jess and says she is sorry for not being able to stop it. She blames Justin and herself for not stopping Jessica from being raped. (In the books Hannah says that she did not put Bryce as a reason because "..the

tapes need to be passed on. And if I sent them to him, they would stop. Think about it. He raped a girl and would leave town in a second if he knew... well... if he knew that we knew."每 This is not explained in the show.) Hannah's tenth reason is Sheri Holland, a friend of Marcus and Hannah, Sheri offers to give Hannah a ride home, as Hannah is drunk

and distraught after pushing Clay away and witnessing her friend get raped. Hannah is reluctant to say yes so Sheri does a cartwheel to show that she is sober enough to drive her home. Hannah accepts her offer and gets into her car, they start to drive and Hannah asks for a charger because her phone just died. While Sheri helps her search she

looks away from the road and looks back up to see that she is about to smash into a stop sign. They both get out and Sheri tells Hannah to get back in the car, Hannah wants to report it but Sheri doesn't want to get in trouble. Hannah insists they report it and Sheri drives off because Hannah refuses to get back in. Hannah later finds a working phone

to report it but the police say they already got the call, but not about the stop sign, there was an accident a few minutes later and Jeff Atkins, a school friend of Clay's died because he crashed into another car after one of them did not see the stop sign. Hannah's eleventh reason is Clay Jensen. During her attendance at Jessica's party, she sees Clay

and they start talking, they end up going upstairs and talking some more, a couple come out of Jessica's room and she suggests they go into the room. When they are int he room, Clay kisses Hannah, Hannah allows this and they start to make out on the bed Hannah and Clay are about to have sex when Hannah remembers every bad things that

happened to her because of something sexual, Justin, Alex, Tyler, Marcus and Courtney. She begins to have flashbacks and can't handle them. She becomes scared of being touched and asks Clay to leave. Clay obeys and Hannah reveals that this one is actually on her, and Clay doesn't belong on the list, but he needs to be there if she is going to tell

her story. Hannah's twelfth reason is Bryce Walker. After sending the photo around school and assaulting Hannah in the corner shop, he gets into the hot tub while Hannah is in it, alone. Hannah becomes scared of him, knowing that he raped her friend. She tells him that she needs to go home but Bryce refuses to let her get out of the hot tub. He

grabs her hands and holds her down while he rapes her. Hannah becomes lifeless, and looks like she is no longer inside of her body. She freezes and Bryce continues. Hannah walks home after Bryce is gone, when she gets home she writes down a names of people that have helped her get where she is, emotionally, mentally and physically. She says

over the tapes that Bryce had helped her live up to her reputation of being a slut. At this point she is completely drained and plans to kill herself so that no one can ever hurt her again. However after finishing what she thought was her last tape, she felt something shift and decided to seek help. Hannah's thirteenth reason is Mr. Porter, the guidance

counselor. After Hannah decides to seek help, she visits the school counselor. She tells him that she wants everything to stop每life. He asks a series of questions and she answers them. She then talks about the list that went around, labelling her "Best Ass". Mr. Porter says he hadn't heard of it. She tells him that people were reacting to it and he asks

when the last time was, she tells him that it was at a party. Something happened but she doesn't really tell him what, he thinks she is implying that she had sex with someone that she didn't want to at first but maybe consented and changed her mind. Hannah becomes upset that that is the first thing he assumes. Mr. Porter asks more questions and

Hannah further implies that she was raped. Mr. Porter understands slightly her implications, he asks for a name of the person who raped her, Hannah refuses to give his name without security, she wants him to go to jail and asks that she never sees him in school again. Unfortunately, Mr. Porter can't promise her this he tells her that if she can't give

him a name or if she isn't sure that she can even press charges then the best option is to move on. Hannah becomes more upset and angry asking "Do nothing?!" Mr. Porter tries to help her further but Hannah has all that she needs, she needs to "move on". She decides to finish the tapes, she drops makes a copy and drops the copy off with Tony, her

only trusted friend left, she then mails the tapes to the first reasons. She proceeds to go home to kill herself. She slits her arms with razor blades and bleeds to death in a bath she filled with warm water. A gravely concerned Tony races to her house after listening to the tapes, but he is too little, too late to stop her. Production Notes Universal Studios

suicide hotlines. Australian youth mental health service for 12每25 year-olds headspace, issued a warning in late April 2017 over the graphic content featured in the series due to the increased number of calls to the service following the show's release in the country.[11][12] Quotes ※ I think 13 Reasons Why will always be an important part of my life. It

was the first job I ever had, even if it*s in a small capacity, on social media. § 〞 Katherine Langford on being done with 13 Reasons Why[13] ※ What happened to Hannah will always be the first clause of the story. The rest of the story is about young people, as so many young people, maybe all young people today (learn) how to heal from the things that

have hurt them#to make the world that they want it to be, not just the world they are inheriting#and above all, how to take care of each other. § 〞 Brian Yorkey on Hannah on being one part of the story.[13] ※ We had a number of people ask us, along the way, why we had Hannah kill herself in the way we did and why we showed it. We worked very

hard not to be gratuitous, but we did want it to be painful to watch, because we wanted it to be very clear, that there is nothing, worthwhile about suicide, in any way. § 〞 Brian Yorkey[src] ※ As hard as it was to see the final decision that Hannah made when she died of suicide, I think it was important to show that it's not a pretty death, it's not an

easy one, and then the pain that never ends, for her parents immediately thereafter, who are left with this horrible burden. § 〞 Dr. Helen Hsu[src] ※ It was in our hope, in making 13 Reasons Why into a television show, to tell a story that would help young viewers feel seen and heard, and encourage empathy in all who viewed it, much as the

bestselling book did before us. Our creative intent in portraying the ugly, painful reality of suicide in such graphic detail in Season 1 was to tell the truth about the horror of such an act, and make sure no one would ever wish to emulate it. But as we are ready to launch Season 3, we have heard concerns about the scene from Dr. Christine Moutier at

the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others, and have agreed with Netflix to re-edit it. No one scene is more important than the life of the show, and its message that we must take better care of each other. We believe this edit will help the show do the most good for the most people while mitigating any risk for especially vulnerable

viewers. § 〞 Brian Yorkey's statement on the graphic scene depicted in Season 1[14] Trivia Katherine Langford, the actress who portrays Hannah Baker, admitted that she hadn't read the book before starting filming, not knowing what she was in for and hadn't read it during filming and then realized that the story was getting quite heavy. Dylan

Minnette, the actor who portrays Clay Jensen, also admitted he hadn't read the book before filming.[15] Selena Gomez commented in the 2017 13 Reasons Why panel, that she felt like the book was meant to become or be a series.[15] Mandy Teefey, Gomez's Mother and one of the producers, also commented that she read the book and also felt like it

was meant to become or be a series.[15] Selena Gomez was originally asked to be cast as Hannah Baker, but she stated that she didn't want there to be two different conversations: one about the Netflix series and the other focused on her. She asked for someone else to be cast to take the focus off of her. She felt the series needed to do the book

justice for the young adults who related to the story line. Together Selena Gomez, Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman got matching semi-colon tattoos.[16] Brandon Flynn got the same tattoo, but did it at a separate time from them.[17] Unlike the first season, the second, third and fourth season are not based on the book. In honor of the final season, 13

Reasons Why teamed up with Scholly to give away 50.000 dollars to 10 students who have been leaders in awareness and advocacy for mental health and other areas of student wellness.[18] Multimedia Images 13 Reasons Why Featurette Netflix13 Reasons Why Hannah's Monologue Netflix13 Reasons Why Official Trailer HD Netflix13 Reasons Why

Professionals, Cast, Crew and Activists

talk about the topics addressed in the show. The first season of it is 30 minutes long and directed by Brian Carroll. It features members of the original "13 Reasons Why" cast talking about their experiences filming the show and Executive Producers Mandy Teefey and Selena Gomez talking about why they were motivated to create the show. Synopsis

Several members of the original cast, such as Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen), Katherine Langford (Hannah Baker), and others return in this documentary to talk about their experiences with bullying and filming the show. Professionals who deal with sexual assault and bullying talk about how things play out in the show and how you can spot the signs of

victims, but how you can also say the wrong thing or completely miss the signs. Executive Producers Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey, Gomez's mother, talk about their motives for creating the show and why the show is special to Gomez in particular. Jay Asher is featured in the documentary, talking about his experiences with the cast and crew in

making the show and his view on the topics he wrote about. Plot Introduction A message of where to go if you need help, is labeled underneath a scene from 13 Reasons Why.[1] Scenes from 13 Reasons Why and Interviews from cast members are played aside each other. Alisha Boe, who portrays Jessica Davis, says that 13 Reasons Why was a special

story for her, she read it for the first time when she was 14 years old, at a time when people were being mean in middle school. It changed her perspective on how people should treat others, understanding that you have no idea what is going on with other people. Derek Luke, who portrays Kevin Porter/Mr. Porter, notes that high school is a tough

environment for a person to grow up in. Katherine Langford, who portrays Hannah Baker, says that the young adult audience they have are treated like people and not teenagers. Brandon Flynn, who portrays Justin Foley, states that the story deals with harsh themes, and not in a "polite" way, to start a conversation around the topic. Justin Prentice,

who portrays Bryce Walker, says that the topics they talk about in the show need to be addressed and we can't shy away from them. Jay Asher, the author of the book the show is based on, says "The whole issue of suicide is an uncomfortable thing to talk about, but it happens, and so we have to talk about it, it's dangerous not to talk about it, because

there's always room for hope". Selena Gomez, an executive producer of the series, says that they wanted to be honest and make something that helps people because suicide shouldn't be an option. Dylan Minnette, who portrays Clay Jensen, says that ending your life instead of seeking help is tragic because you don't get to see your future, you don't

get to see what you could go on to do. Kate Walsh, who portrays Olivia Baker, says that the topics need to be discussed to educate young men and women. Tom McCarthy, who is a writer and producer for the show, says the writers and producers are storytellers, they entertain, but he saw the meaningful material and hoped people would talk about it.

Brian Yorkey, creator, writer and producer of the Netflix adaptation, says that they wanted to tell the truth about the effects the events in the show would have. They wanted to create an honest, integral show for每more so, but not limited to每young adults. They could watch this show and be educated because they don't see a lot of raw, honest and

harsh portrayals of their everyday lives. Slut Shaming and Cyberbullying A scene from 13 Reasons Why, showing Justin Foley taking a photo of Hannah Baker going down the slide in Eisenhower Park plays and Katherine Langford says that the moment was innocent, but unflattering when taken out of context and "posted by a guy with a particular

rep" spinning the photo into a story to destroy her. Langford comments that when Bryce posts the photo, it gives it a different context because no one was there, it becomes "the beginning of the end for her" and does "irreparable damage to Hannah's reputation", she can't fix it by telling people what happened. Alisha Boe tells us that it's "definitely a

generational thing" because throughout her school life everyone would go home and go on the internet, summarizing their lives: school and then social media. She also adds that when you're being cyberbullied you're being attacked by so many people hiding behind a screen. Dr. Rona Hu, a psychiatrist from Stanford University School of Medicine,

says that adults don't understand the affect cyberbullying has because it didn't exist when they were that age, they don't know that cyberbullying doesn't end when the school bell rings. Selena Gomez, having had experience with this, adds that a picture can say a million different things and out of those things, people will conjure up their own story,

whether or not it is true and it gets used against you, it affects you. Alexis Jones adds that you can feel incredibly alone because they're consumed by technology and have access to the online world, there is no safe space for them. Yorkey vocalizes that adults underplay things that go on in a young person's mind, but for them it's their entire world.

Mandy Teefey, executive producer, says that hopefully if they share the story it can help adults understand. Yorkey adds that Hannah Baker stopped being a human being to everyone and started becoming a thing. Dr. Helen Hsu voices that girls feel pressure to be attractive, but if things go too far, "somehow now you're a slut, nobody likes you, you're

not worthy of being a real girlfriend", Jones adds that being labelled a slut is a snowball effect for people to treat her as a sexual object instead of a human being. Langford states that growing up is learning who you are, maybe having a first sexual experience, maybe having a boyfriend or a girlfriend, unfortunately, the culture of slut shaming that

runs so deep in the school immediately labels and affects her每keeping in mind that Hannah was still new at Liberty High. After everything that happened, she has a flashback of every bad thing that has happened to her because of guys and it stops her from being able to have sex with Clay Jensen, which she originally did want to do. "I don't think Clay

has any idea of what's going on in that moment", Minnette voices, "he thinks he did something wrong. I think it's, just pure confusion, just obviously there's something going on that he had no idea about.". Dr. Hu adds that "at that point, Hannah's been through so much, even being with a nice guy, like Clay, she starts to get almost Post-Traumatic

Stress Disorder". McCarthy hopes that people have discussions realizing that things happened that they could have stepped in with, instead of ignoring or encouraging it. Young Adults and Communication Yorkey speaks on the fact that teenagers, like Clay Jensen, are not people who can communicate the things they are feelings, shown with a clip

where Lainie Jensen, Clay's mother, asks about bullying, which he doesn't respond to, and then further asks him about Hannah Baker, he lies and says he barely knew her. Yorkey comments on another scene, where Clay is taking a shower and is feeling a lot of emotions that he can't express, "This scene is one of the most powerful moments of the

show for me, because it rings so true to who I was when I was a teenager, where you have so much going on inside of you, and so little ability to share it with anybody." Miles Heizer, who portrays Alex Standall, adds that he remembers experiencing feelings when he was younger but couldn't communicate it because he didn't know and he didn't know

how to. Brandon Flynn says that it would be healthier to talk about it but not one has the awareness, "even someone as smart as Clay", Dylan adds that people aren't sure how to talk about it and aren't sure if they'll understand. A scene between Matt Jensen, Clay's father and Clay shows Matt asking Clay to open up to him and Lainie more, or just tell

them when things are happening. Teefey says that if parents were honest and didn't ignore issues and talked about what they went through, it would really help kids bit more comfortable in talking about the subject. Teefey then looks at her daughter, Selena Gomez and says that she always told her that she doesn't have to tell me everything, but if it's

something important, she is there with no judgement. Jay Asher says not being able to communicate is something that almost everyone relates to. Sexual Assault and Awareness We see a scene with Mr. Porter and Hannah Baker, Hannah is going to give life one last try. Yorkey says that Hannah missed the opportunity to say what had happened to her

and Mr. Porter missed the opportunity and missed a lot of signs to see that she was in immediate crisis who needed more help that he gave her. Asher says that Hannah could have been more helpful, and in a way she "kind of sets up Mr. Porter to fail" and says it's okay to recognize that she wasn't perfect and could have done more. "The challenge for

Hannah, is that she would have had to have the strength to describe what happened to her and the courage to label it 'rape'." Yorkey says, she wasn't ready and that's not her fault. Sexual assault comes with silence and pain, it takes a safe space and someone who is qualified to help them. Mr. Porter didn't have that so Hannah could not tell him

anything. Derek Luke says that "sometimes you can be trying so hard and miss it, you can be sincere but sincerely wrong.". Dr. Rebecca Hedrick says it's common for young adults to not recognize their own emotions, to not be able to verbalize them. Langford backs this up, "If Hannah had been able to understand what she was feeling, and why, then

it could have made all the difference.". Yorkey says that teenagers may Instagram and Snapchat and Facebook, but that's curated. You only know what they're putting out there, you only know what they're able to tell you. Brian Yorkey opens the talk on sexual assault: "It was a really interesting discussion in the writer's room, approaching the scene

where Justin lets Bryce in to ultimately have his way with Jessica. And there were people who said 'no one would do this'. Dr. Hedrick says that a lot of times guys have their concept of the 'Bro Code' where if their friend is assaulting someone they just look the other way, no matter who it is. Instead of saying that they have their back unless they're

doing something that is legitimately sketchy. Dr. Hu talks about Hannah and the Bystander effect. "The bystander effect is when we talk about how could someone not interfere if you think something terrible is going on. In the scene at the party, not only is Justin culpable, there's, I think, maybe some people wondering, well why didn't Hannah do

anything?" Langford takes over, saying if you put yourself in her shoes, there are things to take into account: Hannah was drunk, Hannah was hiding and Hannah was not supposed to be there. In Katherine's opinion she believes that Hannah didn't actually realize it was happening and then all of a sudden it was happening and then all of a sudden it

was over. Alexis Jones, backs this up by saying that we don't realize, so often, people in Hannah's moment will freeze. If you're not in their shoes you would say you would have done something. Which is easier to say, in theory. Truth is: it requires a bold, authentic confidence to step in and that, at the time, was not who Hannah was. Alisha Boe says

that when she read the ninth episode, she called a close family member who was also a rape survivor and they told her they were happy the producers and writers we're not shying away from the ugliness, and telling it in such an authentic, harsh way. Prentice says reading the script was devastating, and they they had to bring it to life, which was

harder to do. Boe comments that Jessica is forever changed, it's a permanent thing so she hopes that people understand that it's not okay to get drunk and have your way with people because you change someone's life and your life. Prentice says most people who have committed an assault on someone are a friend, people you know. If Bryce doesn't

have consequences he will keep doing what he is doing. Dr. Hu talks about people like Bryce, Predators, saying that the show displays that it's not obvious to see one, Bryce is a popular guy and an athlete. Jones says that Bryces's exist on every single campus, men don't really know what consent means or looks like. Flynn says that parents need to sit

down and talk to their children and teach them what actual, true, proper consent is. Hedrick says that, people like Bryce, they are usually repeat offenders who find victim after victim. We see Hannah's rape scene play out in the hot tub as Langford, Yorkey, Jones and Hu talk over. Yorkey starts by saying that this scene was one of the two most

difficult to film, they didn't shy away from what happens because if you don't tell the full story, it minimizes what sexual assault survivors, victims and what Hannah Baker went through. Langford says that their goal was to represent everything as authentically and truthfully as possible. Jessica Yu (director of the episode) put a lot of thought into the

way it would be shot. In the scene, they "stay on Hannah's face longer than is comfortable", which Katherine says was actually in the script. Which is important because it is uncomfortable, it's uncomfortable to watch and to be in it. Prentice says that it does a good job of showing you what rape survivors and victims go through. Yorkey says that they

had counselors advise them on how to shoot it and write it, and they talked to Justin and Katherine to help them understand what goes on through someone's mind and what or why they do what they are doing. Langford says that in talking to Rebecca Hedrick and Rebecca Caplan she had an insight into what people go through while an assault is

happening. Hedrick furthers this: "Whenever someone is faced with a major trauma, they have the fight flight or freeze response. And especially if they've had accumulated trauma in the past, the more likely option would be to freeze and that's what happened with Hannah". Dr Hsu says "she might even dissociate a little bit, a lot of times victims of

trauma come out of their body, she (Hannah) goes blank, you see the light go out of her eyes" Jones comments that we rarely see the bravery and the candor and the pain that exists on the other side of being a survivor, and how damaging it is. We see this with both Hannah and Jessica. Boe says that rape should be a topic that we should all be able to

talk about and not be ashamed and there needs to be a safe space for them to talk. Jones also backs this up. Suicide and Signs Yorkey, Hsu and Hedrick take on the topic of suicide: Yorkey says that in Hannah's last day she believes she is worth nothing because she has been treated like an object instead of a human being, Hsu comments that she also

stops trying and reaching out because she isn't strong or healthy enough to assert herself. Hedrick says that young adults feel like their pain is going to last forever and that there is no way out because they haven't fully formed their frontal lobe (executive function). Yorkey says that they wanted to show Hannah's suicide in graphic depiction because

they wanted it to be painful to watch, because they wanted it to be clear that "there is nothing每in any way每worthwhile about suicide". Kate Walsh says she wanted to make the scene where Olivia finds Hannah as authentic as possible because people have gone through this. Hsu also says that showing it tells you that suicide isn't a pretty death or an

easy one. And then the grief for her parents after is furthering the pain. "For those of you who will now be looking for signs everywhere, what does it really look like? Here's the scary thing: It looks like nothing." Hannah Baker says over the tapes. Hsu talks about Alex Standall's attempt to kill himself after everything with Hannah, "People are at a

higher risk of suicide if someone that they know has died by suicide... the person who survived somebody else suicide often feels guilty and can blame themselves and that seems to be a large part of what happened with Alex." Hedrick lists the signs that you could look out for: Drastic change in behavior Grades changing Fighting with friends or other

people Substance Abuse Miles Heizer comments that "young adults don't feel like they can be treated so they don't talk about it or sometimes it's too overwhelming. But there usually is." Gomez furthers this by saying it is treatable and there are millions of ways that you can find help. Dr. Hsu believes that a lot of people become paralyzed by their

fear of not knowing or not understanding and an overwhelming experience of feeling. But because they don't talk about it, no one does and that is the worst thing. Yorkey says that he hopes we see, around Hannah in the show, that there are people who care about her and there are people who care about us. Langford says that if you don't feel like

talking to someone you know, you should call a hotline or talk to someone anonymously and adds that "There is an entire future of incredible things waiting for you and if you go you don't get to每you don't get to see it." Minnette ends with "I hope that this show really opens up a lot of conversations and helps people realize the smallest thing you do to

someone or say can change so much for better or worse". It ends with a clip of Clay reaching out to Skye as Tom McCarthy ends with "It's more than a show about a young woman's suicide, or sexual abuse, sexual violence, rape, it's much more than that. I think it's a wonderful way the show ends, with Clay just taking a minute to acknowledge a

woman in his life who he hasn't connect with in a while. And it's those small steps, which I think can make a big difference." Hsu, Yorkey and Gomez add to this and it ends. Cast and Crew Order of Appearance Quotes Cyberbullying ※ It's definitely a generational thing, because my whole middle school and high school when we got home, all we would

do is hop on, either it was Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. So that's our whole world, is our school and then social media. So that's why when you're being cyberbullied, you're being attacked by so many people, who are hiding behind, you know, a computer screen. § 〞 Alisha Boe (on cyberbullying) ※ Adults don't realize how much cyber

bullying is hurtful, because it didn't exist when people my age were younger. And cyberbullying doesn't end when the school bell rings. § 〞 Dr. Hu (on cyberbullying and adults) ※ Once something is online, it's just there, and a picture can say a million different things. And people come up and conjure up their own story, or what they think is right. And

it affects you, it hurts you. § 〞 Selena Gomez (on Photographic Cyberbullying) ※ Suddenly you can feel so terribly alone, and because of their interaction and because they're so engaged, and tethered to their devices, there actually is no safe space. § 〞 Alexis Jones (on cyberbullying) ※ The adults tend to trivialize what for teenagers and young adults is

not trivial. Teenage brains don't work the way adult brains work. You know? Trauma and pain? Feel like they're going to last forever. And I think that we forget that sometimes. § 〞 Brian Yorkey (on the downplay of cyberbullying from adults) ※ Hopefully sharing these stories can help parents pay attention to things that may be small to them, but,

could be rocking the world of their kid. § 〞 Mandy Teefey (on 13 Reasons Why) ※ In high school your reputation is everything. And she (Hannah) stopped being a human being to all those guys and became a "thing". § 〞 Brian Yorkey Slut-Shaming ※ The topic of slut shaming, like what happened with Hannah, we're in a place where, on the one hand,

girls feel incredible pressure to be rated on being attractive, to be popular, to be good-looking, to look perfect o Instagram. And yet if it goes just a touch too far somehow, now you're a slut, nobody likes you, you're not worthy of being a "real" girlfriend. § 〞 Dr. Helen Hsu (on Slut-Shaming) ※ Somehow all those things get mixed up, especially for girls

and women. And for a girl who's just developing her identity, and just developing into her body, and just learning about sexuality and relationships, it's a lot of hurdles to navigate. § 〞 Dr. Helen Hsu ※ I think the hard thing about the minute that a girl in this context is labeled a slut is because it's just a snowball effect. Because it gives people

permission to continue to treat her as though she's a sexual object instead of a human being. § 〞 Alexis Jones ※ Growing up and going through high school, is when you're meant to be learning about who you are. And maybe having your first sexual experience(s); having your first boyfriend or girlfriend and trying to figure that out. And this huge

culture of slut-shaming affects her, ultimately. § 〞 Katherine Langford Trivia ProtectHer is a locker room program educating male athletes on the importance of respecting women, founded by Alexis Jones, who appears in Beyond the Reasons, talking about cyberbullying and bullying in general. Plot Introduction Selena Gomez gives a monologue to introduce the second season of Beyond the Reasons: a short summary of the second season of 13 Reasons Why and what will happen in the second season of Beyond the Reasons. Elaine Welteroth, the host, narrates over scenes that cover topics of what they will talk about. Intervention

Elaine introduces the first panel to sit on the couch: Miles Heizer (Alex Standall), Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen), Christian Navarro (Tony Padilla), Brian Yorkey (Producer), Nic Sheff (Writer) and Dr. Rebecca Hedrick (series consultant). They talk about Tyler's storyline; his attempted school shooting. Dylan Minnette talks about why Clay chose to step

in front and risk his own life to help Tyler and stop the shooting from going ahead. Christian Navarro talks about why Tony helped Clay to help Tyler. Elaine then moves on to talking about Tyler's rape, Brian Yorkey and Rebecca Hedrick talk about male sexual assault. Brian Yorkey states that male sexual assault and rape is "ridiculously

underreported" and Rebecca Hedrick states that there is a website that she learned a lot about male sexual assault from called "". Elaine moves back to the topic of gun violence and Brian Yorkey talks about the statistics school shooting and to film guns. Elaine then moves on to Justin's storyline; drug addiction. Nic Sheff talks about writing

Justin's storyline and struggling with drug addiction himself. Dylan talks about the acting aspect for both him and Brandon Flynn (Justin Foley). Elaine opens things up to the audience for a Q&A (Question and Answer), a member of the audience asks Brian Yorkey about whether or not the media portraying a school shooting and guns contributes to

glamorizing it or contributes to a solution. Justice Elaine introduces the second panel to sit on the couch: Justin Prentice (Bryce Walker), Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis) and Carrie Goldberg (series consultant), along with Brian Yorkey again. Justin talks about playing Bryce, Brian talks about why the storyline for the second season was based on Hannah's

trial, he stated that some of the crew took a vote on who would hold the school responsible and who wouldn't and they were deadlocked at 5-5. Dylan talks about Clay's decision to release the tapes, Alisha talks about why Jessica was initially reluctant to speak out about Bryce and how the odds were stacked against people believing her. Carrie also

speaks to another side of Alisha's statement and comments that it is a small victory for Jessica to get her rapist to go to court because six out of a thousand sexual assaults actually end with someone being prosecuted. Justin talks about his privilege being a white male and what he's learned about sexual assault from women around him and being on

the show. Brian talks about why he wrote Bryce to be sentenced to three months probation, Carrie also comments that realistically victims go through many hurdles just to get their rapist in court and still a judge might let their rapist go. Recovery Elaine introduces Dr. Christine Moutier, M.D. (from American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), who

has joined Alisha, Miles, Dylan and Brian on the couch. Brian talks about Clay's storyline of hallucinating Hannah, Katherine Langford (Hannah Baker) appears through a pre-recorded video to talk about Hannah as Clay's hallucination and Clay's journey of healing after Hannah's death. Dylan talks about Clay and Justin's friendship growing through

the second season. Brandon Flynn (Justin Foley) appears through a pre-recorded video to talk about Clay and Justin's friendship and his favorite moment of their brotherly relationship. Miles talks about the difference between how Jessica and Alex are treated during their recovery and Brian talks about the friendship between Zach Dempsey and Alex

while Alex goes through his recovery, he mentions that Zach teaching Alex to dance is one of his favorite moments between them and Miles playfully admits that he is a better dancer than Ross Butler (Zach Dempsey). Alisha talks about Jessica's recovery and tells a story of a woman and her daughter who, during a scene with Jessica in the mall with

Nina Jones, believed her acting to the point of almost calling the police. Dr. Christine Moutier, M.D. comments on the scene where Jessica's Dad tucks her into bed and Alisha comments that it's powerful for Jessica to be back in her bed having her Dad tucking her in because Jessica's rape happened on her bed. An audience member asks Brian why

the school wouldn't let Alex's suicide attempt or Hannah's suicide be talked about and if he thinks it's the way to deal with it. Brian answered that the school was afraid of suicide contagion, he said that they researched suicide contagion. Dr. Christine Moutier, M.D. comments that she doesn't think it's the right way to talk about it, and that shutting

down the conversation completely stigmatizes it even further and the right way would be to talk about it but safely. The Complicity of Silence Elaine introduces the fourth panel: Anne Winters (Chl?e Rice), Brandon Butler (Scott Reed), Joy Gorman-Wettels (executive producer) and Alexis Jones (founder of ProtectHer and series consultant), along with

Justin Prentice (Bryce) again. Elaine starts the topic of the takedown of The Clubhouse. Brandon talks about Scott changing his relationship with Bryce after slowly realizing that Bryce isn't who Scott thought he was. Alexis talks about one of her tools when she talks to boys about sexual assault. Anne talks about why Chl?e chose to stay with Bryce

and change her decision to speak out about Bryce raping her, Alexis comments that Chl?e has been programmed to believe that Bryce giving her attention is half of her worth, she believes that her friends seeing her with someone like Bryce is what she needs for a social life and therefore to matter. An auidence member asks about the environment on

set while filming the heavier scenes, especially the ones dealing with rape. Joy answers that they have therapists and consultants on set for the cast, Justin comments that going thoroughly through rehearsals help as it makes it less terrifying and thanks the crew for helping them through it. Complicated Relationships Elaine introduces the new guests

for the fifth panel: Julia Bicknell (writer) and Helen Hsu, PSY.D., they are joined by Alisha, Dylan and Christian. Alisha talks about Jessica and Justin having sex while she was still with Alex and Jessica's recovery. Julia talks about Zach and Hannah's relationship and Dylan talks about Clay finding out about Zach and Hannah's relationship. Katherine

Langford (Hannah Baker) appears through a pre-recorded video to talk about Hannah and Zach's relationship and stated that Hannah losing her virginity to Zach doesn't change the severity of what Bryce did to Hannah. Dylan talks about Clay and Skye's relationship slowly ending, stating that they needed each other to be able move on and process.

Dylan, Alisha and Christian talk about the importance of having a support system. An audience member asks Christian if he was intentionally trying to break the stereotype of what a gay man looks like personality and appearance wise with Tony. Christian answers that authenticity was the most important thing, he was scared that because he's not a

gay man that he would mess things up, so his focus was making sure that Tony was not portrayed as "a gay man" just a man who happens to be gay, wanting to do justice to and for the gay community. The Role of Adults Elaine introduces the new guests for the sixth panel: Kate Walsh (Olivia Baker), Suzanne Timms (Suicide Prevention Advocate) and

Marissa Jo Cerar (writer) who are joined by Dr. Helen Hsu, PSY.D., Kate talks about how much has changed for Olivia before and during the trial. Marissa talks about Olivia and Andy's storyline; divorcing after their daughter's suicide. She states that married parents who lose a child or children often end up getting divorced and they wanted to show

how grieving can look different. Writers discovered that men in relationships are often the ones who move on quicker than the women and they wanted to be truthful in that while being as respectful as they could be. Suzanne introduces herself as a wife and mother of four children, in 2013 she lost one of her children to suicide, she is an advocate for

suicide prevention and helped Kate with playing Olivia dealing with the loss of Hannah. She also stated that she was grateful that Kate wanted to know the real emotions and understand a grieving mother rather than just read her lines off of her script. Kate talks briefly about playing Olivia, commenting that she had a challenge to play her as

accurately and honestly as she could with the help of Suzanne. Suzanne talks about seeing Kate play Olivia so authentically and honestly, and being grateful that Kate took on everything she told her and was impressed with her performance. Marissa talks about how adults need to open up a conversation with their children otherwise they might not

know what is going on, they need someone to be there. Helen adds onto this saying that it's more about just being there for your children, and sometimes parents need to open up an opportunity where they need to bring in someone who isn't them as she worked with families where children were more comfortable talking to certain people other than

their parents. Marissa talks about Mr. Porter and how he is a good person but he made a mistake with Hannah because he didn't have the tools because of the schools rules, they didn't want to make it a thing of counselors are bad people, adding that in the writer room that call him "Season 2 Mr. No-Fucks-Porter" as he started to care less about rules

in the school and more about helping out kids as he had to bend rules sometimes. Kate finishes off by saying how she is happy to be apart of something that opens up a conversation and talks about topics in a bold way. Cast and Crew Order of Appearance Activists Alexis Jones Suzanne Timms (Suicide Prevention Advocate) Quotes Sexual Assault and

Rape ※ It*s important to remind ourselves that most crimes of sexual assault are not sex crimes; they*re crimes of violence. § 〞 Brian Yorkey ※ We've found that this kind of thing happens in high schools across America, particularly with athletes violating other students with mop handles and pool cues and 〞 almost at epidemic levels. It's not

something that's reported often, male on male sexual assault is ridiculously under reported. Men don't like to talk about it. § 〞 Brian Yorkey ※ Tyler's a victim of sexual assault, and I think that in many ways, it's even harder for a young man who's been violated in that way, to admit it. § 〞 Brian Yorkey ※ At the point that Tyler's Mom comes in and asks

him how his day was, he doesn't have the slightest ability to begin to tell her what's really wrong, that doesn't even seem like an option for him. § 〞 Brian Yorkey ※ There's a statistic that one in six men have been sexually assaulted, and there's a really great website that has a lot of resources for male victims. I think it's much harder for male

victims because, as Brian was saying, it's just-- it's a lot more difficult for boys and men to talk about being the victim because they have the same shame and guilt and fear, that women and girls have, who are victims, but it also brings into question their own sense of masculinity and manhood, and they're supposed to be strong protectors and it

makes them question everything. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick ※ It was important for us to try to bring the audience over to Tyler's side a little bit. There's a concept called radical empathy, which is essentially the exercise or the attempt to empathize with someone completely and someone who is completely different from you. And as brutal as that scene

is to watch, I defy anybody to watch it and not feel pain for Tyler. So, whereas previously you may have been able to distance yourself from him and say he's a loner, he's a Peeping Tom, he's a nerd, in that moment, you are right there with him feeling pain. And from that moment on, it's impossible to forget that you shared humanity with him. § 〞

Brian Yorkey Suicide Note: This section is a stub. You can help 13 Reasons Why Wiki by expanding it. Tyler's Attempted School Shooting ※ You know we hear this term "Hurt people hurt people". And right now in our country we're talking a lot about gun violence and how it affects every kind of community but particularly in the wake of Parkland, I

think watching that scene and then seeing how he ended up carrying out his version of revenge, I think it's almost impossible once you reach that state of empathy for a character like Tyler to not look to sort of begin to understand how someone even arrives at something so unthinkable. § 〞 Elaine Welteroth introducing the topic of gun violence and

school shootings ※ Clay sees a lot of himself in Tyler and vice versa. Because, I think they both feel like the world is out to get them, that, they both can't find happiness and I think that he does understand the pain that Tyler would be going through, I think-is why he immediately tries to jump into action. § 〞 Dylan Minnette on Clay stopping Tyler. ※

Tony is made up of〞certainly a part of his personality is this moral sense of justice. And he finds in Clay, someone who has, possibly, a greater sense of justice and a greater sense of morality and someone who is willing to act on it. Tony is quick to jump to action, simply because, Clay asks. And it's the right thing to do. § 〞 Christian Navarro on Tony

helping Clay help Tyler. ※ I think the question of whether or not we should portray guns at all is a worthwhile question to talk about. And to me, it also goes back to the question of, well, not portraying it doesn't make it go away. And not telling the story, doesn't mean that it's not happening in society. It just means that we're not talking about it. § 〞

Brian Yorkey on the choice to film an attempted school shooting and guns ※ Teenagers are emotional and impulsive, and that's not a very good combination to have for somebody holding a weapon that's that, um (sic) easily leads to death. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick ※ So, yeah, the safest choice would have been to go behind the doors and lock himself in

with the rest of the kids and help everybody get to safety, to hide in closets or behind objects and make sure that someone has called 911. Certainly we would never advise anyone who's exposed to an active shooter to confront them, even if it's a loved one. We would advise to get away. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick on a safer, better choice Clay could

have made instead of confronting Tyler Trivia Katherine Langford and Brandon Flynn weren't able to sit on the couch and talk so they appear via video. Page 8 View source Previous Next Beyond the Reasons (Season 2) N/A 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons is a mini-documentary that is released on Netflix for each season of the show. Professionals, Cast, Crew and Activists talk about the topics addressed in the show. The third season of it is 18 minutes long. Like the first and second season, it

features members of the original 13 Reasons Why cast and crew alongside the new cast and crew talking about the topics in the show. Once again the setting has changed, the cast and crew are sat on a couch in a living room talking to each other about their experiences and the topics, and this time they are not in front of an audience. Synopsis The

cast and crew of the third season of 13 Reasons Why sit down with professionals to talk about the topics covered in the third season. They talk about recovery, shame, being a survivor, speaking up about assault and change. Plot Introduction Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis) introduces the season this time: "As with every season of our show, Season 3 of 13

Reasons Why was an intense experience for me as an actor, which means it can also be intense for all of you to watch. We've heard from so many of you who have opened up about your own stories, and we are really grateful. We hope you'll join us as we continue that conversation now. If you or someone you know needs help, please go to

to find local resources." Recovery (In order of speaking) Devin Druid (Tyler Down), Brandon Flynn (Justin Foley), Dr. Rebecca Hedrick (Psychiatrist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), Hayley Tyler (writer and producer), Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Casey Ford) talk about recovery. Devin and Brandon talk about how

both their characters, Tyler Down and Justin Foley, chose to speak out about being a survivor of an unwanted sexual experience. Rebecca and Hayley talk about how different people deal with recovery of sexual assault differently, Alisha talks about how Jessica went through the process of claiming her body back from feeling like she was an outsider

in her body. Rebecca talks about how patients have come to her and talked about how the show has been very relatable with their own stories and how boys and men seem to benefit from the second and third season knowing that a male sexual assault story has been told. Devin talks about how both Tyler and Justin deal with their experience in

different ways, coming from different sides of teen culture in school. Tyler is a very closed off person because of the way he is treated in school, but he managed to dealt with his experience by finding safety in Clay Jensen and Jessica Davis, being apart of the H.O. group with other survivors and Dr. Singh being a person he could trust and talk to. Bex

states that Casey believed that sexual assault was a male on female thing; males assaulting females. She comments that Casey's belief is broken when she sees the amount of males who speak out after Jessica's speech in the gymnasium, she becomes more welcoming of Tyler after realizing that he is a survivor and sexual assault can happen to anyone.

Rebecca finishes off by saying that survivors will speak out in their own time and shouldn't be rushed into anything as it could make it worse for them. Hayley adds to this saying that survivors feel ashamed but they can get help and reach out. Shame (In order of speaking) Alex Jones (Founder of "I Am That Girl" & "ProtectHer"), Timothy Granaderos

(Montgomery de la Cruz), Seth Stewart (Director of Development and Communications for "1 in 6"), Brian Yorkey (producer and creator) and Tyler Barnhardt (Charlie St. George) talk about shame. Timothy talks about getting into the role of a different Monty as Monty changes and opens up a different part of himself. Seth talks about Monty's

behavior being because of his experiences and the culture around him and instead of asking people "Why are you bad?", ask them "What happened to you?". Brian talks about how Monty was a villain in the second season, and that we have to talk about the fact that sexual predators are not born (into being that way), they're made into being the way

that they are. Seth also talks about Monty being an example of someone feeling very deep shame that makes him shy and introverted when it comes to his feelings and his sexuality but also very aggressive and angry because he's carrying around such an intense feeling of shame; shame and isolation go hand in hand, evolutionarily, shame makes

people isolate the feelings that, if they act on or express, could make them feel ostracized. Unfortunately due to the way the feeling is sometimes processed, your brain could make you feel shame with things that you don't actually need to feel shame with. Timothy talks about how all Monty and other men need is a support system, for people to allow

them to be vulnerable, for people to say it's okay for them to talk about their feelings and their sexuality. He comments that it's unfortunate that Winston didn't come into Monty's life earlier because he's the only person who ever opened Monty up and gave him a safe space to be vulnerable and be open about his sexuality. Brian comments that after

Monty and Winston have sex Monty tells Winston that he isn't gay and Winston replies only with "That's fine. You can be whoever you want to be." without judgement. Alexis comments on there being a space of vulnerability for Monty from Winston, something Monty was never given growing up so he didn't get to process the things he needed to

resulting in who he became before he met Winston. Seth states that research shows that many men aren't given emotional stability or shown the emotional language they can use adding to that they are shown a very entrenched definition of masculinity. Tyler adds that although the show doesn't provide all the answers, it provides itself as a catalyst to

open up a conversation and feed knowledge into teenagers brains. Change (In order of speaking) Brenda Strong (Nora Walker), Justin Prentice (Bryce Walker), Dr. Rebecca Hedrick, Joy Gorman-Wettels (writer), and Trevor Smith (writer) talk about change. Brenda and Justin talk about Bryce having an emotional breakdown with his mother, while she

holds him, both doing it for the first time. Rebecca states that both Bryce and Monty had toxic father figures in their life so they had an unhealthy role model to look up to and when young men have an unhealthy father figure to look up to, they mold into that. Joy puts forward the rhetorical question of whether or not Bryce deserves a chance to

apologize, to which she affirms that everyone should have the chance to apologize, but they shouldn't think or demand that it should, would or will be accepted. Bryce tells Jessica that he's not expecting her to accept his apology and Olivia tells Bryce that he will never begin to understand the meaning of "Sorry". Justin comments that he hopes that

jock culture and rape culture will change and in seeing Bryce try to change people may actually know that some people in that culture can change and evolve and feel remorse for their actions. Rebecca notes that the court was the only boundary that had ever been placed on him to understand that there are consequences to his actions that he didn't

like and he finally started to slowly understand that his actions do have consequences, something he wasn't shown by his parents. Brenda adds that all the characters are finally starting to have and take accountability for their actions, although it feels bad for them it creates an opportunity for them to change. The introduction to the third season of 13

Reasons Why plays as the outro for the third season of 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons. Cast and Crew Order of Appearance Quotes Recovery ※ I think it's so important how survivors choose to stand up, when they choose to stand up, and it's so interesting to have those two different kinds of boys in these two different kinds of pockets of, you

know, of the high school jungle, have that shared experience. § 〞 Brandon Flynn about Tyler and Justin's experience with sexual assault ※ Everyone who's been in an experience where they have suffered, they are going to react to it differently, and with sexual assault, it's a very charged situation, and it depends on your own personality and

background and your support system, the way that you're going to deal with it and your process. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick ※ You know, we see both the characters of Tyler and Justin Foley kind of work through their experiences in much different ways. They come from two different parts of this teen culture, even though they've been through a lot of

the same things. For Tyler, who is very closed off just as a person, I think it was the comfort in finding friends with Clay, with Jessica, and the members of the H.O. group throughout the season, and Dr. Singh being a trustworthy person that he could confide in and talk to, to help get to a point where he's taking control of the experience and his

narrative. § 〞 Devin Druid on how Tyler was able to start telling about his sexual assault ※ Last season, you saw her struggle with her body. She felt like a prisoner in her own body. And this year, she takes her power back, and she discovers her sexuality, and it's all in the road of recovery, of claiming your body back § 〞 Alisha Boe about Jessica

reclaiming her power ※ I've had a lot of patients that have come up to me and related how this show really told their story, and they were so grateful to have been able to see it. I think one of the benefits of it is that men are getting more comfortable talking about sexual assault, but it's still a very taboo subject for boys and men to discuss their stories

about unwanted sexual encounters. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick about sexual assault on men ※ I think it's really important when someone has been assaulted, or has had an unwanted sexual experience, to be able to talk to somebody about it, but if they do it before they're ready, it can cause a lot more problems. And so it's important never to rush

somebody to talk about it, not to ask for specific details. Eventually, you know, the hope is that they would feel, at least, in a safe enough environment that they could speak about it. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick about sexual assault victims speaking up ※ You never know what someone else is going through in their lives. You never know what their

experience has been, and people may feel ashamed, and they may feel like they can't reach out and get help, but hopefully by seeing these stories and knowing that other people struggle with these same issues, they can reach out, they can talk to somebody about it, and know that they're not alone. § 〞 Alexis Jones about sexual assault and reaching

out Shame ※ I think, in preparation for the scene I really tried to understand what it would be like to be alone. I would journal out these situations that Monty was going through, you know? His relationship with his father, his friends, and eventually, you know, even his sexuality. One of the ongoing themes for Monty from the get-go, for me, was that he

was alone § 〞 Timothy Granaderos about preparing for the scene between Monty and his dad ※ You know, so much of his behavior is socially, culturally, what a lot of people who've gone through these types of experiences, you know, the family trauma, the abuse, it's what they demonstrate, what they exhibit. And in our work, we talk about traumainformed care, and one of the essential elements of that is when we look at someone's behavior, we don't ask, "Why are you bad?" We ask, "What happened to you?" § 〞 Seth Stewart about Monty's behavior ※ I learned from 1 in 6 was we don't talk about sexual predators, people who have committed sexual assault, as monsters. Because if they're

monsters, they're bigger than we are, and you were talking about empathy dissolves those barriers, and we have to recognize that monsters, for the most part, are not born, they're made. You know? And we keep making them. § 〞 Brian Yorkey about people who commit sexual assault ※ It doesn't mean you're necessarily shy, introverted, you know.

You can be aggressive. You can be angry. That doesn't mean that you're not carrying around an intense feeling of shame, and shame goes hand in hand with isolation, you know? There's even speculation that shame, evolutionarily, is an emotion that keeps us from revealing something that will ostracize us from the group. Unfortunately, the way we

process that often is that we become ashamed of things that aren't necessarily things we have to be ashamed of. § 〞 Seth Stewart about people with shame ※ I think that the only way to resolve that is to talk about it, is to talk about it with the people around you, try and find someone you can open up to and become vulnerable, and that's why, I think,

for Monty, it's pretty tragic that Winston came along when he did, and not earlier, because he's that one person that really opened him up and got him looking at things a little differently. § 〞 Timothy Granaderos about Monty's shame for his sexuality ※ Our work shows that many men are not raised and given emotional language, or encouragement to

express themselves. Add to that these very, very entrenched ideas of what masculinity means in terms of strength, and then independence, knowledge, confidence, aggression... § 〞 Seth Stewart ※ We're also trying to tell the stories of teenagers, and tell them truthfully, and so they're going to make wrong choices. And our hope, always, is that you

watch that and you go, "That was the wrong choice." § 〞 Brian Yorkey about the choices the characters make ※ The most important thing is that when someone opens up, no matter how small it is, that they feel safe, they feel heard, and they feel completely, radically accepted. And what we always tell people is that the best you can ever do is to tell

someone, "I hear you. I'm here for you. I care about you." And that really is step number one, because for a lot of people who've gone through a lot of things, they've never even heard that. § 〞 Seth Stewart about how to react to people opening up Change ※ You know, Bryce and Monty, the father figures in their lives were aggressive, angry men. They

taught them that if they're feeling vulnerable, or if they're seeing someone else's vulnerability, you meet that with power and domination. And so that's what they think it is to be a man. I think, in reality, teenage boys are hungry for information. They don't want to grow up and be someone who abuses or harms other people. They want to do the right

thing. So I think it's important to have healthy role models, and if it's not your own father, to find out other healthy models. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick about teenage boys' role models ※ Does Bryce deserve the chance to apologize? I think everyone deserves a chance to apologize. No perpetrator should expect that apology's gonna be accepted. (..) It's

certainly always up to the survivors of abuse to make the decision whether they want to first of all hear it, and then take it in, and to give them the opportunity, but I think it's important for abusers, when they're actually finally recognizing with some empathy the damage that they've done. I think it's important for them to at least make the attempt, if

it's coming from a heartfelt place, to put that out there. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick about abusers apologizing to victims ※ We have to be able to inspire that they are able to change, and give them hope and show them healthier ways to relieve their own suffering that don't manifest as harming themselves or other people § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick on if

people can change ※ In terms of changing the culture that we live in of rape and sexual assault and the jock culture and all that, there needs to be some semblance of hope that it can change, and I think, in seeing the humanity in Bryce, and in the characters in this show, you go, "Oh, these are people who may actually feel remorse for their actions.

They're not just write-off human beings." § 〞 Justin Prentice about Bryce feeling remorse ※ in no way are we excusing or pardoning any of the horrific things that Bryce did, and I think it's important that we say that. § 〞 Joy Gorman-Wettels about humanizing Bryce ※ Many of us would have liked him to go to jail, but it was still a boundary placed for

him, and that made him think he wants to change his behavior, and that's the only way that this works. If they make that internal choice. "I don't like how I'm feeling about this," or "I don't like the consequences that have happened to me because of my bad behavior. I want to get better." Then that's the first step, the biggest step, the most important

step. § 〞 Dr. Rebecca Hedrick about Bryce changing after his sentencing Gallery Images Alisha Boe introducing the third season of Beyond the ReasonsTitle Card introducing the topic of RecoveryBex Taylor-Klaus, Devin Druid and Alisha BoeAlisha Boe and Brandon FlynnDevin Druid, Alisha Boe and Brandon FlynnDr. Rebecca Hedrick and Bex
