WIRE WHEEL CONVERSION FOR YAMAHA XV750 ’81-‘83This is how I did the conversionThe wire wheel conversion requires you to supply an XS650 front hub and an XVS650 rear hub?with the drum brakes as well. Also you need a drive gear from an XV1100 Then its rims,?spokes,?bearings and some machiningFront rim and spokes you can get from you will need a 17"x 3.5"?32 spoke rim?approx.?$300?and custom spokes approx $250Bearings are approx $30 each x 4Bearing seals approx. $15 each x 4Machining work and on the rear rim and stock axle $100Lacing $250 for bothFront wheelThe front wheel is an easy one you need to find a front hub off a Yamaha XS650, spokes and a rim. I used an 18”x 2.5” rim and stainless spokes form I Fitted a 110/80-18 tyre this fits nicelyFinished wheel looks like this, new bearings and seals are recommended. Also the standard XV750 disc and speedo drive work with this hub.Rear wheelI used a hub from a Yamaha XVS650 I believe you can also use the 535 hub as well but I have not done this. This is a bit trickier first you have to this remove the drive gear. And replace it with one from a XV1100 that looks like this. There is a small amount of machining of the hub neededThen you have to remove the bearings and seals and replace them with ones that suit the stock XV750 17mm axleNext you need to machine down the by 6mmas the width of the XVS hub is a little wider. Then all you need to do is drill out the brake plate to 17mm and your axle should now work.I used a 17”x 3.5” rim on the rear. This requires some custom spokes. You could use the standard XVS 15” rim if you want but I wanted to have both wheels around the same diameter. Then fitted 130/90-17 tyre. Which is about as big as you can go without rubbing issues? ................
