What began as tribal music for the gods has transformed into the lyrics of American culture today. Now it has a completely different sound, feel, and different lyrics. It is not so much used to worship gods or describe feelings as it is used to entertain. Rap itself began as the ability of a DJ to say rhymes over hip hop music (“The Social Significance of Rap and Hip Hop Culture”). Rap comes from the pain of Black Americans during slavery (“Rap Music”). Thousands of years ago the griots started rap in Africa.
