Age of Imperialism (1870-1914) Map ProjectDirections: You will be completing a comprehensive Eastern Hemisphere map that will include many different aspects of what happened during the Age of Imperialism. All students will need to complete their own map assignment for this project. You will need a copy of the 11x17 map, a class textbook, an “Atlas of World History” and at least twelve (12) different colored pencils to complete the project. Follow the steps below in the order they are listed to complete your map (it may be a good idea to “check” each step off as you complete them):Imperialism in Africa:Using the textbook map on page 757, choose seven colors to make a key for each of the seven countries who have colonies in Africa (ie…blue = Britain, pink = France). Do this in the “General Map Key” box.Shade in the African continent on your map to indicate which regions were under the control of different European countries by 1914 (following the colors you chose in your key).For each of the colonies below, draw in the approximate borders of the colony, label them, and write in the year of their official colonization:Union of South AfricaEgyptAlgeriaBelgian CongoGerman East AfricaItalian SomalilandAngolaNorthern and Southern RhodesiaFrench West AfricaNigeriaLibyaCameroonsUgandaOutline and label Ethiopia and Liberia. They should not be shaded.Turn to page 778 of the textbook and use the map to complete the following tasks:In the “World Resources Key” box, create a symbol to represent coal, copper, cotton, jute, palm products, rubber, sugar and timber.Draw the symbols to represent each of the resources in your key in the approximate location they where taken from in Africa.Using a red colored-pencil, draw in the trade routes that extended across the Eastern Hemisphere during the Age of Imperialism on your maps. Add the red lines to your “General Map Key” box and identify what the lines represent.Imperialism in the Middle East:Using the map on page 765 of the textbook, choose another color to add to your “General Map Key” and shade the region that was part of the Ottoman Empire in 1913.Create a symbol to represent known oil fields in 1914 and add it to your “World Resources Key” box. Use those symbols to indicate the oil fields on your map.Label the following regions:TurkeyPersia (Iran)GreeceSyriaIraqRed SeaMediterranean SeaUse brackets to show where the Suez Canal is. Indicate what your brackets stand for in the “General Map Key” (brackets look like this: [ ] )Using a blue colored pencil, draw in the trade routes through the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea (note: the route should go through your Suez Canal brackets). Indicate what the blue lines mean in your “General Map Key”.Imperialism in Asia:Using the map on page 108 of the “Atlas of World History”, shade the regions of Asia and Australia that became territories and colonies of the European countries to match the color of those countries in your “General Map Key”.Using a different color, shade the region of Russia and add that color to your “General Map Key”.Using a different color, shade the region where the United States controlled territory and add that color to your “General Map Key”.Create a symbol in your “General Map Key” to represent rebellions and use that symbol to identify where the Boxer Rebellion took place. Label the rebellion on your map.Imperialism in Asia (continued):Label where Hong Kong is at on your map. Turn to the map on page 107 of the “Atlas of World History” and use a new color to shade in Japan. Indicate the color in your “General Map Key”.In your “General Map Key” create symbols to represent the British Fleet and American Fleets and then label them on your map. Create another symbol in your key to represent British attacks during the Opium War. Label at least three of those attacks on your map with the symbol.Label where the city of Edo (Tokyo) is at and write a brief description of what happens there in 1853 on your map.Turn to page 778 in the textbook. In your “World Resources Key” box, add symbols to represent coffee, silk, timber and wheat. Draw those symbols on your map in the region they were taken from.Add the other symbols from your “World Resources Key” box to the regions of Asia and Australia where the resources came from (ie…cotton in India).Using the map on page 769 of the textbook, outline the region of India where the Sepoy Rebellion took place at with a color of your choice. Indicate what the outline of that color represents in your “General Map Key”.Turn to the map on page 774 of the textbook. Using a color of your choice, outline the main area of the Taiping Rebellion. Indicate what the outline of that color represents in your “General Map Key”.Using the map on page 774 of the textbook, shade the regions that became spheres of influence of other countries in China with the same color that represents each country in your “General Map Key”.General Tasks:Using the map on page 105 of the “Atlas of World History”, outline the borders of the seven European countries in your “General Map Key” and shade their “home country” in with the color that represents them.Note: United Kingdom = BritishCelebrate!
