Total Europe (EU-23 + EFTA) passenger cars in January 2005 amounted to 1,222,564 units, which represents a decrease of 0.8% (and 0.1% in the EU-15) with respect to January 2004. The relatively slow start of the year has been mainly driven by the drop posted by new EU Member States (-12.7 %) and by EFTA countries (-4%). The number of working days was basically the same with respect to January 2004, with the sole exceptions of Belgium, Ireland and the UK (-1), as well as Slovenia (+1).

The figures for the first month of 2005 show a contrasting figure. Among the five main markets, the U.K. (-8.2%), Germany and Italy (-3.7%) reported losses, while France (+6.5%) and Spain (+6.1%) posted increases. Out of the 23 EU countries considered, 13 posted positive results, ranging from +25.8% in Slovakia to + 1.5% in the Netherlands, while 10 countries posted decreases, ranging from ?23.7% in Poland to ?0.8% in Greece.

As from this first press release of 2005, we are introducing a number of changes in our monthly registration figures. As you will see, the figures per group and brand now include the data for the new EU Member States. In order to safeguard the possibility of statistical comparisons, we are providing a table with the traditional Western Europe (EU-15 + EFTA) figures and one with the data for Total Europe (EU-23 + EFTA + New EU M.S.). We remind you that data for Malta and Cyprus are still unavailable for the time being; this is why we talk of "EU-23" and not of "EU-25".
