He died 27 May 1896 in Troy Grove, La Salle, IL (Age: 77, NOTEREF _Ref293145461 \f \h 3). He married LUSETTA “ELIZABETH” KLINEFELTER, daughter of Johannes Kleinfelter and Elizabeth B. Grumbine on 22 May 1843 in Somerset, Pennsylvania NOTEREF _Ref292521395 \f \h 1. She was born on 11 Jan 1827 in Fredericksburg, Lebanon, Pennsylvania,. The Schads (sometimes spelled Schott or Shad) arrived from Palatinate, Germany in Pennsylvania in 1764 aboard the Ship Chance, and settled in Hummelstown (later Jonestown) Pennsylvania. Jacob’s father died soon after he was born and was raised by his mother in Lebanon County, PA. At the age of fifteen he apprenticed in the shoemaker trade NOTEREF _Ref292521395 \f \h 1 making a living as a boot maker in Lebanon City, PA where he sold a plot of land to Herman Ristenbatt in 1847. Apparently this sale was in anticipation of a great adventure.Lusetta’s grandfather, Christian Klinefelter, had just returned from “way out west” (IL) with wondrous stories about the fertility of the land and the friendliness of the Native Americans. Her brother Jacob, a farmer in nearby Fredericksburg, decided he would follow Christian back to IL to start a new life. He persuaded thirteen other families, including the Shorts, to join them NOTEREF _Ref293150789 \f \h 4.The migration story is paraphrased below from a 1909 Obituary of Jacob Klinefelter NOTEREF _Ref293150789 \f \h 4:“In May of 1849 they founded a company seeking homes in IL. They traveled by wagon to Harrisburg, Pa., then across the mountains to Pittsburgh, then down the Ohio River by boat to St. Louis, MO., up the IL River to LaSalle, IL, then by team to Troy Grove.Boats in those days had no comfort and were more like barges of the present day. ThePassengers furnished their own food and provided their own conveniences for sleeping. If they did not watch their baggage it was liable to reach the wrong destination. The party was composed of:Mr. and Mrs. Christian Kleinfelter (the leader)Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kleinfelter and two childrenMr. and Mrs. Daniel Fahler and three childrenMrs. Jacob Deaner), Levi, and Lydia (Mrs. Isaac Clay)Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Krieser and two childrenMr. and Mrs. Christian Kleinfelter Jr. and two childrenMrs. Catherine Gephardt and childrenMrs. Uriah MyersMr. and Mrs. Jacob Short, sons Josiah and Samuel and Jacob’s mother JulianMr. and Mrs. John Firestone Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hawk Mr. and Mrs. John Waggoner Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Kleinfelter, daughters Rebecca and Bina who died ten days after they landed of cholera.”The Short family settled in the Village of Homer where Jacob took up shoemaking once again. After eight years however he abandoned the trade and became a farmer NOTEREF _Ref292521395 \f \h 1.At the start of the Civil War Jacob enlisted as a private on 30 Dec 1861 in the 64th Union Infantry but was categorized a deserter on 07 Jan 1862 for not reporting for duty – only one week after enlisting. No record was found of repercussions or charges being filed. The entire Short family moved to Grundy, IA in 1868 and continued farming. Jacob had a farm next to his oldest son Josiah and wife. Iowa unfortunately did not suit Jacob and Lucetta and they moved the family back to Troy Grove, IL to stay in 1871. NOTEREF _Ref292521395 \f \h 1Back in Troy Grove he returned once again to shoemaking and taught two of his sons the trade. He is buried with many of his family members in Troy Grove Cemetery.,,Lucetta lived until 1904 and resided with her son Augustus in Troy Grove until her death. He grew up on an Iowa farm his father Lincoln had rented NOTEREF _Ref293640850 \f \h 57. They worked hard to make a living on the land, but they gave up on farming and moved to Smithton, Missouri around 1905 NOTEREF _Ref293641928 \f \h 58. I searched the Pettis County Land records but could not locate deed transfers to Abraham Short about that time even though the 1910 Census shows he owned his home in Smithton NOTEREF _Ref293641928 \f \h 58. James Roy married Mary Sewell in February 2012 NOTEREF _Ref293643307 \f \h 82 in Smithton and quickly had their first baby, Russell, in December of that year. My father, Roy Wayne Short, Sr. was born in Saint Joseph, MO in 1914 NOTEREF _Ref292637897 \f \h 106, about 150 miles from Smithton. In St. Joseph, James Roy was a streetcar conductor per my father’s birth certificate NOTEREF _Ref292637897 \f \h 106 and by 1917, he had moved again to Princeton, Kansas. He registered there for the WWI Draft. On the draft registration card he requested a deferment due to family dependencies and listed his occupation as a Telephone Operator for the Princeton Telephone Company. Circa 1916 - Back – Mary Sewell and James Short. Front – Russell and Roy Short, Sr.We pick him up again in 1920 in Kansas City, MO working as a Mechanic for a motorcar company. Sometime between 1920 and 1925, James Roy and Mary (Sewell) Short were divorced. Mary appears in the 1925 Kansas State Census with sons Roy and Russell and is listed as “Head”. James Roy is gone.Mary is still in Kansas City in 1930, but had remarried to Henry Elmer Lyerla. I could not find James Roy Short in census records for 1925 or 1930. I do know that he was still living in Kansas City in 1930 because he remarried that year to Alma Ellen Powell on January 28th. at the Frederick Hotel. They were still in Kansas City for the 1932 City Directory, but in 1934 he divorced Alma Powell and moved to Chicago, IL where he was listed in the Chicago phone book. He married Marion Smith January 4, 1936 in Chicago with whom he remained married until his death. In the 1940 census, James and Marion still resided in Chicago where he was listed as a house painter. In 1945 he and Marion purchased my childhood home on the south side of Chicago. My father needed an inexpensive place to live near the commuter train station, so his father James Roy offered him low rent in his new house. Although my family continued to live there until the mid fifties, James Roy only owned the home until 1947 when sold it and returned to Smithton, MO.James Roy and Marion lived in Smithton, Missouri until his death on 13 Oct 1955 NOTEREF _Ref293648510 \f \h 81. He is buried in the Smithton Cemetery among other Shorts, including his father Abraham Lincoln Short, and mother Carrie. In a telephone interview with my sister Mary Nadine Short NOTEREF _Ref293648871 \f \h 99, she disclosed more about the personal side of James Roy. She is six years older than me and knew him when she was a little girl. She tells me he was an unfriendly man who paid little or no attention to his son Roy or grandchildren even though they lived in the same house. He was described as mean and was an alcoholic his entire adult life. This explains his numerous marriages and divorces. As the above timeline suggests, he was unable to hold down a job and was forced to move regularly. James Roy Short and Mary S Sewell had the following children:i. RUSSELL EDWARD4 SHORT was born on 14 Dec 1912 in Smithton, Pettis, MO NOTEREF _Ref292637543 \f \h 102. He died on 29 Apr 1974 in Cartersville, Bartow, Georgia NOTEREF _Ref292637543 \f \h 102. She died on 03 Aug 1979 in New Sharon, Mahaska, IA. Notes for Roy Wayne Short Sr.:My father Roy Wayne Short Sr. was the paperboy for the Hardendorf girls in the early thirties in Chicago. Marvel Hardendorf had a crush on Roy and used to buy him ties, but he married a girl from England, Edna Finney, instead in 1934. Sadly, Edna and their eight-month-old baby Mary died in a horrible fire on 19 Feb 1937. Brokenhearted, Roy returned to the Hardendorf residence to pursue his relationship with Marvel, but she was now married.Roy then started dating Marvel’s sister Mary Jane Hardendorf and married her in 1938. They had four children (including me.) Roy Sr. worked 35 years for the Chicago American newspaper as a Circulation Manager. He was also a part-time Musician at local Chicago Country and Western nightclubs. The long hours at work plus playing music at night meant he was seldom home. My mother divorced him in 1953. Never one to give up, Roy once again pursued a relationship with Marvel, who by then was also divorced. Nothing serious ever came of it, but they remained good friends. He retired early at 46 due to poor health and moved us to Inverness, Florida next door to his mother. He died shortly thereafter on December 17, 1960 of heart disease.Prepared By:Preparer: Roy W Short Address: 1154 Saint Julien St.Brentwood, CA 94513Phone: 925-418-4495Email: roywshort@ ................
