Series 1: Kamloops High School

1915-1962 -- 24 cm of textual records

Administrative History: Kamloops High School was first established in 1904, operating out of the Oddfellows' Hall on 1st Avenue and led by A. Perry. The school moved to a more permanent residence on Third Avenue as part of the Kamloops School in 1907 as enrollment expanded to 35 students. As the population of Kamloops continued to grow, the school quickly became overcrowded and funding and land from the City was sought to build a larger permanent educational building. The project saw fruition, and the Kamloops High School was formally opened by the Minister of Education at the corner of 6th Avenue and St. Paul Street. A new wing was opened in 1929 to incorporate increased programming covering home economics and science classes. Additional portable classrooms were added to the campus during the 1950s again, as the population of the school expanded to include students from the region around Kamloops, but longer term plans were made to build a school on the southern edge of the City. Construction on the new Munro street site began and the school officially opened in 1952. In 1956 a high school opened in North Kamloops, which eased the population growth slightly, but enrollment continued to expand. John Peterson Junior Secondary school was opened in 1959 to accommodate grades 7 and 8, and various neighbourhood schools opened during the 1960s, which shifted the dynamic of student populations to focus on splitting junior and senior secondary levels. In 1981 extensive renovations were carried out on the Munro street property, bringing it up to code and adding additional facilities to accommodate an increased range of programming. In 1988 the school once again returned to offering a full range of junior and senior secondary programming, and was combined with John Peterson (Junior) Secondary School in 2003 to its current configuration.

Scope and Content: Series contains yearbooks from Kamloops High School.
