ABC’s of First Grade
A
If your child is absent, please remember to send a note stating the reason for the absence in your child’s take-home folder. It must be brought to school to avoid an unexcused absence.
B
If you would like to send birthday treats with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so, as long as it is a store bought product. These treats will be eaten during the last half hour of class
C
Parent and Teacher conferences are typically held at the end of the first grading period. Watch for information and reply accordingly. You can also schedule a conference at other times during the school year.
Communication is important. Please sign/initial communication calendar in the take-home folder daily. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, comment, or concern. You can reach me by phone, in person, by email at peddy@, or by sending a note.

Discipline is simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all.
I use Dojo to help with communication. Please feel free to reach out to me using a Dojo Message!

My school email address is peddy@. I check my email daily. If you have an email address that you’d like me to be aware of, please let me know.
Please complete and return the emergency card promptly. If your home or work phone number changes, please inform the office and myself ASAP.

If there are any field trips, information about them will come home in the take-home folder and I will provide details along with a permission slip.

Students are asked to wear athletic shoes on the days that they are to attend gym.
Students will earn grades in first grade. Daily work and quizzes will account for 60% of the average, and tests will account for 40%.

Students will have homework Mon –Thurs. Homework is due on Friday. Homework assignments will vary and will be sent home in the take-home folder. Unless otherwise noted, the homework will be checked weekly. Students must read every day as part of the homework. Please initial the reading log daily.
I
Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. 1st Graders are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying, buttoning, dressing, etc.

Writing takes place every day in 1st Grade. One way we accomplish this is through writing stories in our journals during writer’s workshop. Please encourage your child to write at home. In addition to the writing, your child will have journals for social studies, science, math, and ELA.

Keep updated by checking the take-home folder daily for any information and updates, and joining our class’s Class Dojo.
L
Our class will visit the library every week. Your child will be able to check out a book and return it within the following week. Your child may check out a new book once they return the one they have read.
M
The children will have music class with Ms. Burrows.
The 1st Grade math curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their school career and lives. Math concepts are covered through our daily calendar and guided Math.

News will be posted on Class Dojo to keep you informed about what is happening in our class. Please read through it to ensure you stay informed of our class’s events.

Open House -More information will follow. However, we anticipate a Fall and Spring Open House.

When picking up your child after school, please remember to be ready to present proper identification. Furthermore, if your child’s mode of transportation for dismissal changes, please send a note in the take-home folder.

1st Grade report cards will be sent home every nine weeks. Please sign and return them ASAP. A second copy of the report card will then be sent home for you to keep.

The focus of the 1st Grade science curriculum is on developing an awareness of the world in which we live. Science concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy based, hands-on approach and inquiry based investigations.
The 1st Grade social studies curriculum focuses on the students and how they relate to others in their families, classroom, school, and community. Those and other Social Studies concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy based and hands-on approach.

If your child has any changes in their transportation please let me know in writing prior to, or the day of the transportation change by sending a note in your child’s take-home folder. All notes need to be signed and dated!

Visitors and Volunteers must register in the office and pick Up a badge.
Volunteers must complete a Parent Volunteer training course online AND be cleared through the district in order to attend field trips or help in the classroom.

I welcome volunteers once they have attended training and cleared by district! I will post a wish list of items that we may need in the classroom. All donations are greatly appreciated! (
