Web Resources for teaching ESL/EL students - This website has a wealth of information for teachers who have ESL/EL students. On the home page is an article for teachers entitled “Seven Teaching Strategies for Classroom Teachers of ELLs.” This article would be very beneficial for any teacher who has ELL students but extremely helpful for a 1st time teacher of an ELL student. This article provides tips on how to plan instruction, what strategies to use in class, and ways to group ELL students in order to provide the best support. This information will be beneficial to the teacher when writing lesson plans and planning activities. Also at the top under the Lesson Plan tab there are lesson plans that can be used to help the EL student make a connection to some of the vocabulary that will be used in the classroom. - This website has many printable activities that can be used in the classroom. It is extremely beneficial to the teacher because the materials are already created, the teacher only has to print and use. At the top of the page, there are lots of tabs that the teacher can click on to obtain materials, depending on what she is teaching. If the teacher is focusing on building the EL student’s high frequency sight word bank, she could click on the Flash Card tab & then Dolch Sight Words tab. There she would find sight word cards with pictures which can help the student connect the word with a picture meaning. Also under the Flash Card & CVC Word Cards tabs are picture cards of words with the CVC pattern. This is very helpful when teaching the EL student phonics & decoding. There are also flash cards for the 4 seasons, animals, places, jobs & etc. These cards can assist in teaching basic English voc. words that is used in everyday conversation. - This website is a great resource because it is divided into targeted skills, such as: Grammar, Speaking, Vocabulary, Listening, Reading, and Writing. There is also a Quiz tab. On the left hand menu is a breakdown by grade (1st-8th & high school). This menu is extremely helpful because it helps narrow the information provided so that it is grade or level appropriate. An EL teacher may use this website as extra remediation for the student and possibly the parent at home if they have access to the internet. The teacher can also use this as a resource if he/she is providing tutoring or extra support services for the student. Under the Listening tab is a breakdown of Low Beginning, Low intermediate, High beginning, High intermediate, & Advanced practice. By clicking on one of these categories, the student is able to listen to a story and answer questions about the story. For example, the Low beginning tab has the Low Beginning Quick Links tab with short listening activities. Here, is a Pre-listening activity to do with the student before he/she completes the listening activity. The Fun Day tab provides an age appropriate (primary/early elementary) activity that uses the voice of an adult and child. This helps the student hear how the words are spoken in both voices. After answering the questions, the score & correct answers are provided by clicking Final Score. There are also instructions for a Post Listening Exercise that helps to expand & connect to the Listening activity. An ELL teacher may also use these activities as formative assessments to help monitor progress of the student. This website will help support & enhance the development of BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) & CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency). - This website is a great resource for the teacher and student because on the home page there are language tabs (English, Spanish, French, & German). It is extremely beneficial for the student who has little or no English language competency. Under the category Play & Learn Games, the menu tabs are: Uppercase, Lowercase, Upper-lower case, Shapes, Colors, Writing, Numbers, Words, & Keyboard. If the teacher is teaching the alphabet (Kindergarten SOL) this website can be used as a visual for the EL student. There is also an audio component that can help enhance the listening skills. Using the visual and audio component together will aid the EL student in mastering saying, recognizing, & writing the alphabet as well as the other skills tabs. If the EL student speaks Spanish, French, or German as their 1st language, the teacher can use this site to learn basic words in that language to be better equipped to communicate with the student and parents. This can be done by clicking on the Language tab (English, French, Spanish, German) and then the specific skill of interest. ................
