When the offensive started, the Big Red One was resting just north of the Bulge after having spent 15 days of combat in the Hurtgen Forest. The division was sent to Malmedy to help defend the Elsenborn ridge where it stopped the 12th SS Panzer Division and then later helped open the door back to St. Vith.
