Trap Team

Sutter High Trap Team

Parent/Student Information

The trap team will practice at the Coon Creek Trap and Skeet Club located at 5393 Waltz Road Pleasant Grove. We will practice once a month in the off-season and at least once a week during the competitive season. The competitive season runs from February through June with 6 tournaments in various locations. Most locations are within the Sacramento area and the farthest would be Sierra Valley (Beckworth), Carson City NV and Angles Camp. The State Championships are located in Stockton and will be held in June 2012. The State Championship is a 2-day shoot on a Saturday and Sunday. The championship requires 200 shells or 8 boxes of shells. I have attached a calendar with the dates that are set for the tournaments.

Needed for each shooter are a shotgun, ear protection, and eye protection. Ear protection can be anything from muffs to the foam earplugs. You can get either at Walmart in the sporting goods section. Most shotguns used in trap are 12 gauge, but any gauge will work. Most field guns will do and it does not matter weather the gun is an auto loader, pump or a break open action. One shot is fired at a time. The ammo used are target/trap loads which use size 7.5’s, 8’s, & 9’s shot (8’s are preferred). No hunting loads or other types of ammo can be used on a trap range.

The tournaments each have a $24 entry fee and require 100 shells or 4 boxes of shells. The price per box at the club is $6 a box or you can by them at Walmart in a box of 100 shells for about $23. At the practices, we like the shooters to shoot 2 rounds of 25 which would require 2 boxes of shells. We get the club price of $4 per round of 25 for the clays. Therefore, a practice would cost $20. You pay as you go. There is also a $15 registration fee for the CYSSA. Once the club is established and we start receiving funds from grants and donations, some of these expenses may be reduced.

I encourage and appreciate parent involvement. A parent is required to be at the Safety Training required for each shooter before they can shoot. We will be scheduling this event in the near future. There will also be make-up safety training sessions. Release and waivers, and medical consent forms must be signed by a parent or guardian before a shooter can participate. Shooters will need transportation to the club for the practices and to the tournaments. Car pooling works well.
