Opportunity after graduation

It has been too long, but some thoughts: Several professors were key to "turning me on" to the college experience and the lifelong value of learning. The Honor System has had a tremendous impact on my life and my sense of ethics. The Commerce School provided a "hands on" personal approach to teaching ... overall excellent preparation comparable to most graduate business students with whom I competed after graduation in a business environment. Living on the Lawn was special and integrated the "Learning" with the physical plans of the Academical Village ... It was a classroom in itself. Everyone should have the opportunity.

Commerce Business Law -- Challenging, hands on; Engineering Strengths of Materials -- Great course with great professor; Dr. Quinn in ENGR. Calculus (maybe the most important man in my transition from rural high school to college ... He believed in me.). Dr. Kavins in "Management" who was my advisor. Aleranbon Von Thelan who has been a lifelong friend and who taught investments ... he helped me get started in the business world.

Dean Kasbalk in Commerce ... a good leader who developed the basis for a world class school.

The Lawn ... when I think of it I am flooded with all the good memories and a sense of accomplishment balanced with peaceful serenity. Studying in my rocking chair brought new meaning to the concept of learning (while sitting on the Lawn under one of the majestic shade trees).

Residential Life

You must be kidding!

Yes, I was probably last on the list! On the other hand I applied late. Bachelor's row rooms were at the bottom of the desirability list due to their smaller size ... but we thought they were more "intimate"!

Integration of the whole academic experience ... It's hard to describe how this experience changed my life for the better and helped me refocus on the "most important" things for my future. My wife and I met as a result of a blind date arranged by a fellow Lawn resident, Bob Williams. The people of the Lawn (Lawn Chowder and Marching Society) were all special in their own way and getting to know them was particularly meaningful.

Cold weather trips to the "head". Restricted female visitation ... remember the University was all male in those days.

"The Spot" and other houses of culinary delight.

VW Fastback ... "The Brown Pelican."

I was always active in extracurricular activities ... government, sports, concerts, etc. This helped me maximize my experience.

The Rotunda ... It was and is one of "the most beautiful places I have ever seen ... and I've seen a great deal."

Same ... but now the Lawn itself has the greatest fascination ... when inside it is as though time has stood still ... as though I can once again enter 45 West and regain the hours I treasured so much.

Non-Academic Time

Road trips were standard on non party weekends. Fraternity brothers at Pi Kappa Alpha (PKA), Lawn residents. Basketball at Memorial Hall, Skyline Drive, People's Drug for midnight milk/cookies, squash, tennis. Lots of booze ... we were the ultimate in binge drinkers ... probably defined the concept ... no booze during week, only on weekends though.

Many but too many years have passed ... certainly Algernon Thelen, Gordon Bujrris, Gene Corrigan, many others.

Honor Committee - incredible experience. Student Council - during early period of student protest. Commerce council. PK / German Society. Fraternity – PKA. Everyone should become active in extracurricular activities as they are the best preparation for future social / real life situations.

(Religious: but not as much as today.) Varsity basketball. I.M. – various.

Honor System. Vietnam War ... very confusing. Whether "Paul" is dead ... maybe the Beatles were more popular after all. Being able to play football on "The Lawn" (Dean Runk said no ... personally). Integration of the University.

See last question ... local and national issues were melted together.

Girls. Vietnam War. Graduation.

Charlottesville

Beauty of it all.

Coached basketball for inner city youth. Musical interests.

Most Vivid Memory

Graduation ... it was a sparkling time ... a time of accomplishment made good ... a lifelong dream of my parents ... the beginning of a new life with a new wife to be who graduated from Mary Washington on the same day. The rain stopped just long enough for the ceremonies and it was perfect.

But there were so many from which to choose.

Of course, my times have since been eclipsed by the times spent with my son Stephen who now attends the University and is also my fraternity brother. He will live in the PKA room on the West Range next year and the circle will be completed ... "What a turn on"!

Give my best to Dean Bice, et al!
