Individuals and SocietiesName_________________________________________Electoral College CartogramPeriod________The Electoral College is a group of representatives that formally elects the president and vice president of the United States. The U.S. presidential election is an indirect election. The voters of each state determine electors who represent them in the Electoral College. The lectors, in turn, cast electoral votes on behalf of the states they represent. Electoral votes determine the outcome of the election. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have a certain number of electoral votes. For each state, the number is equal to the number of senators and representatives the states has in the U.S. Congress. States with larger populations have more representatives, and therefore more electoral votes. The District of Columbia, which has no senators or representatives, has three electoral votes. In nearly every state, the candidate who wins the plurality (highest number) of the popular votes receives all the state’s electoral votes. The exceptions to this rule are Maine and Nebraska, which use the congressional district method. Under this method, each of the state’s congressional districts is assigned an electoral vote, which is given to the candidate who wins a plurality in the district’s popular vote. But Maine and Nebraska each also have two statewide electoral votes, to represent the state’s two senators. *270 Electoral Votes are needed to win the election!**Definition of a cartogram: a map showing statistical information in diagrammatic form.Example: Regular world map (left) and Cartogram of the world’s countries by population (right)—Notice how small Canada, our neighbor to the north, gets when shown by population!ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS ON BACK!!!!Directions: Using the United States map showing Electoral College numbers, make a cartogram of the United States. Each state’s size should represent the number of Electoral College votes that it has in the 2016 presidential election, not the actual size of the state. For example, Connecticut will be much bigger than Alaska. Use the map below and a piece of graph paper (provided) to complete the assignment. For every electoral vote, use TWO squares on the graph paper. For example, Minnesota has 10 electoral votes so it will have 20 squares on the graph paper. The states should be located on your cartogram in the general area that they are located on a political map. The shapes will be somewhat distorted but try to keep the general shape of states and the nation as close to the actual shape as possible. (NOTE: Alaska and Hawaii are NOT drawn to scale or placed in their appropriate geographic positions.) ................
