DeMartino9.6.17Good morning! ?It is my understanding there may be some confusion with the absence codes in AESOP. ?As you know, the new contract no longer has personal business days -- LSCTA members will receive 4 personal days annually. ?Therefore, there is no longer a personal business day code listed for LSCTA members in AESOP.Additionally, the language in the new contract no longer separates family sick and sick days - - LSCTA members will receive 13 sick days annually. ?Therefore, there is no longer a family sick day code listed for LSCTA members in AESOP. ?If you are taking a family sick day, you should enter a sick day, and then enter "family sick" under "Notes to Administrator" if you so choose. ?The code FML-PD should?not?be utilized for family sick as it is?not?for this purpose. ?FML-PD is actually FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act). There is a FMLA paid and unpaid status, but those codes should only be used by the District to enter for individuals that completed the necessary paperwork and are eligible to receive FMLA. ?This code will be updated accordingly in AESOP. ?We apologies for any confusion. If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to call. ?Thank you!Business Office Updates? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ???Kristine DeMartino ? 8.25.16403(b) Tax Sheltered Annuity Program: ?Did you know that you are eligible to participate in Lake Shore CSD's 403(b) Tax Sheltered Annuity Program? All disciplines require reading, writing, and communicating in specific discipline vocabulary. NYS is undertaking the adoption of NGSS (New Generation Science Standards) but unlike CC adoption, according to Education Commissioner, Mary Ellen Elia, this time we are taking it slow, providing professional development and resources vetted by educators. Teacher Centers have been asked to help support the understanding that all educators integrate science concepts/vocabulary into their disciplines. To kick off ECTC’s support of NGSS we are holding a September Science Symbiotic Symposium on September 29 and September 30. We are pleased to involve Lisa Brosnick, incoming President of the NYS Science Association, Mike Jabot from SUNY @ Fredonia, Mike Fisher, NO BOCES, Sue Bartle, E2CCB School Library System, Nancy Cook, Williamsville TC, Judi Dzikowski, Rosen Publishing and others. Friday night will begin with an overview of NGSS – what it looks like, what it means for students and why NYS is supporting this program. As you highlight their child's strengths, discuss academic or social concerns, and share information about child development, parents come to see you as an ally and themselves as true partners in their child's education. A little thinking and planning will help you make the most of these great opportunities.Tips for Success?Make an outline and gather materials.A plan for how you'll divide up the time will help you stay on track. Here's a general outline for a 30-minute conference: 5 minutes: Opening conversation 10 minutes: Report on academic progress and concerns 10 minutes: Report on social progress and concerns 5 minutes: Summing upHowever, you may need to put your plan aside if a parent raises an urgent issue that you weren't expecting. Remember that you can always schedule another conference! In addition to writing an outline, you'll want to make notes for topics you want to cover and have at hand student work, assessment results, information on child development, and anything else you want to share with parents.?Offer conversation starters.Put parents (and yourself) at ease with a question or two: "What did Sam like about school last year?," "What does Tina like to do at home?," or "What are some things you'd like her to accomplish this year?"?Invite parents to share their thoughts.?As experts on their children, parents can share valuable insights. And they'll appreciate your respectful recognition of their role in helping their children.?Highlight the positives.Recognize a child's strengths before discussing her struggles. You'll give parents some perspective while encouraging them to work productively with you.?Address just one or two concerns.?Listing too many problems can make parents (and their children) feel defeated. Mention that you'd like to help the student with several things, but for now you'd like to concentrate on just one or two.?Let parents know if you need thinking time. It's perfectly OK to tell parents you want to think through what they've said, observe their children for a bit, consult others, or read up on an issue they've raised.?Be Prepared for SurprisesParents sometimes surprise us with negative or personal questions or comments: "My son's teacher bullied him all last year." "My daughter's lazy. She never tries at anything." "My husband doesn't care about Mark. He never comes to these conferences." "My wife's divorcing me. Things are falling apart." What can you do in such an instance? Steer the conversation back to positives: "I'm sorry things didn't go well for Adam last year. But because our time is limited, I'd like to focus on what we can accomplish this year if we work together." Focus on the child:?"You seem to be going through some tough stuff right now. I wonder if that's taking? Listen with empathy:?Jasmine's attention away from school. What do you think we might do to help her concentrate?""That must be hard" or "You've been through a lot" can help parents feel heard without injecting your own opinion or advice. Offer to get help:?"You seem to be wondering what to do next. Our school counselor may have some ideas for you."?Follow Up and Follow ThroughAfter each parent-teacher conference, send a note thanking parents for sharing time with you. If you offered to find resources, gather information, and so forth, make sure you do so—and share the results with parents. Each parent-teacher conference can be a powerful occasion for meaningful communication with families. Thinking ahead and following some simple guidelines will help ensure that conferences are positive and productive for everyone.??Source: ASCD - Margaret Berry Wilson is a Responsive Classroom professional development specialist?PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTInterested in Teaching a Professional Development Class? 1.27.16?Click on the link below to access a PDF version of the proposal sheet. ?The form is printer-friendly.?PD Course Proposal Sheet??Safe Schools?Christine Starks 8.30.17Greetings!?As you know, there are three REQUIRED Safe Schools courses this year:?BBP Exposure Prevention: ?Teachers & Administration?Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)?Sexual Misconduct: ?Staff-to-Student?You can find the login for Safe Schools on the home page of our website by clicking the life preserver or here: ? login is your employee ID #; there is no password.?These REQUIRED courses can be done at any time; including during your work day. ?Please do not send me certificates: I can run a report to see who completed the requirements.?IF you CHOOSE to do optional courses; please send me HARD COPIES of the certificates in order for PD/CTLE credit to be granted on your report. ?The optional courses must be completed outside of the workday.?You can find additional information about these optional courses here: ? let me know if you have questions.?Have a great day!?Christine?Safe Schools Training?? Just a few items1. Computer CareSince the start of the school year we have had an unusual amount of damage done to newer laptops signed out to staff. To date these newer machines:- have been dropped causing chassis damage- have cracked or broken screens?- been spilled upon with liquids?- have had screen damage by using a cleaning agent not designed for a laptop screenNONE of the above instances are covered under the manufacturer warranty. These laptops are expensive to purchase and very expensive to repair. In some cases the cost of the repair almost matches the cost of the new laptop. As per the Acceptable Use Policy?DCS users will be held accountable for negligently, willfully, maliciously or unlawfully damaging or destroying property of the District.?A few reminders?- Please take care of the laptop assigned to you.?- Please do not place open containers of liquids near these machines.- Please do not place them in locations that could result in someone tripping over a cord or knocking them off the corner of a desk.?- Be aware of your laptop when traveling and avoid placing heavy objects on the laptop or laptop caseFor cleaning the screen- DO NOT use chemical agents to clean your screen - this will ruin the touch screen- DO NOT use paper towels or Kleenex to clean your screen - this will scratch it- ONLY use micro fiber cloth (like the ones you use to clean glasses) or a soft cotton cloth- NO liquids!2. Round 2 of Smart Schools Bond ActThe second round of Smart Schools is now up on our web site for review. We based this next round on the feedback from staff and the survey along with input from the Technology Committee. Please take some time to review the next round and send us your feedback. We will have this survey up for the required 30 day input and will then submit our purchase plan to SED once we get BoE approval. This is a very lengthy process and SED currently has a back log of projects to review. We are probably looking at some time in the Spring for the new hardware to arrive. Here is the link to the next round of purchases?SSBA3. Energy Savings and Projector LifePlease remember to turn off your ceiling mounted data projector when you are not using it or leave your room. Besides saving energy you also conserve the life of the bulb which are several hundred dollars to replace. Since November 2012 we have saved over $600,000 by turning off devices when not in use.?4. Drezek 10.30.15Hello everyone,The Google Chromebooks are now ready for use and have been delivered to school libraries & media centers.Chromebook Sign OutYou can sign them out using the Google Sheets on the website similar to how iPad carts, laptop carts and some labs are signed out in buildings this year. You must be signed into your?LSCSD Google Account (firstname.lastname@) in order to edit the sheet for the building in which you teach. Any staff member signed into their account can access any sign-out for any building in view only mode.?Sign-out sheets can be found at?District Home Page --> Services --> Technology Services --> Teacher Tech Sign Out Calendars. Here is the direct link:?*Sheets can also be found in the 'Shared with Me' section of your Google Drive. If a file seems to be missing from here, try refreshing the page or accessing through the website.Teacher & Student AccessAll K-12 teachers and Grade 4-12 students can log into any Chromebook using their LSCSD Google Account. Grade K-3 students can use any Chromebook by clicking 'Browse as Guest' in the bottom left-hand corner of the login screen. No email/password is required to use the Chromebook in guest mode.??General UseThe power button is a keyboard key at the very top right of the keyboard. You should notice that these devices are a bit different than your PC or Mac laptop. They run the Chrome Operating System. They start up and shut down in seconds and offer a battery life of 6-8 hours on a full charge. Chromebooks are intended to be used with cloud computing (Google Apps for Education).?Working on the Chromebooks should greatly reduce the need to print.?Grade 4-12 students can save work for assignments directly to their Google Drives. Accessing all Google Apps including Google Classroom is seamless.?Grade K-3 students can use the Chromebook to access the internet and complete web-based activities.?Note that?Chromebooks do not connect to the H Drive & Ocean Drives as PC and Mac laptops do.?Users sign out of the computers by clicking in the very bottom right corner of the screen. Chromebooks can be shut down using the power key or the power icon at the logout screen. Please shut them down before returning them to the cart to charge.?Here is a nice link to get you started with some?Chromebook Shortcuts. There are so many out there.??If you have questions about the Chromebooks in general or using them with students for a particular lesson, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Should you notice technical issues with them, please submit a tech request.?Michael Drezek?Chromebooks J. Barnes 11.12.15Good afternoon. It seems some of the Lenovo N21 Chromebooks we recently put into use have some keyboard issues.Lenovo is working with us to troubleshoot the problem and come up with a long term solution.Lenovo techs will be on site during the next few days to repair machines we have back in the shop.?PLEASE NOTE:If you see a Chromebook missing keys please do the following right away1. Please email me the number of machines that are missing keys2. DO NOT place them back in the cart!3. Please take the broken Chromebooks to your building office and a tech will pick them up to get them repairedThanks for you help and if you have any questions feel free to callNOTE Chromebook J.Barnes 4.5.16The District currently deploys over 400 Chromebooks for student and staff use. Chromebooks are laptops that integrate into Google accounts that allow users to create documents, send emails and collaborate all via the web. While most of the work is being saved to Google Cloud, local profiles are loaded into the Chromebook for faster access the next time they are used. Each log on eats up hard drive space as it creates that local profile. We have started to run into some storage issues in that students may be logging on using personal Google accounts instead of their district issued one. Home accounts may contain more material such as games, photos, videos etc that may impact the local profile size on the device. In some cases students log on using their District account then log off and go back in on their personal account creating two local profiles. These devices have a finite amount of internal storage and cannot be updated. In an effort to prevent a Chromebook from losing the ability to function due to profile memory we are implementing the following procedure. For Chromebooks ONLY- end users may only log on using District provided Google accounts which end with . Personal Google accounts will no longer be accessible from Chromebook laptopsFor District Laptops and Desktops- end users may still access personal Google accounts on regular laptops and desktops. On a PC or Mac the storage is large enough to handle multiple user profiles.Guidance for InstructionALL interactions with students using Google such as sharing files, Google Classroom, content creation and Google office?should be done using District provided accounts.- Educational accounts have unlimited storage while personal accounts are limited to 15 GB unless the end user purchases more storage.- Education accounts also meet the NYSED Parent Bill of Rights in regards to Student Privacy ?- while personal accounts do not.If a student has been doing classwork using a personal account instead of their District provided one they should?Share?the content from their personal account with their district user ID to access this when they are using a Chromebook.CueThink Math for iPad M. Drezek 10.14.15Hello Grade 5 Math Gurus!?I was able to budget some funds this year for the purchase of CueThink math, an app that runs on the iPad. Check it out here:? know the modules are intense and there is little time to spare on "extras." CueThink is not an add-on but something that can support the same type of problem-solving you are already doing in class. Students basically go through the 4 steps of problem solving and create "thinklets" or videos of their solution, sharing them with their peers. In my experience, student engagement levels have increased because the students got to do math on the iPad. Even though it was the same math they would do on paper, the tech piece got them excited. As a teacher, it was helpful to hear how they solved a problem, watch it unfold and see their thinking process. By purchasing CueThink, we are able to not only use problems from their problem bank?but also import our own (ones from modules).?I would love to get this off the ground so that you can use it with students as you see fit. We need to create classes (with join codes) so students can sign up and use. Feel free to tell me to go away and pass altogether. I was just targeting Grade 5 since I know you are all up for trying something new with students and Grade 5 students are often VERY receptive to learning new technologies. We have 180 licenses so that should cover the grade level in all 3 buildings.?If interested, can you just send me your class section sizes so that I can see if there are any spare licenses to include another teacher or teacher(s) in using this so licenses don't go to waste.?There is a 30 minute CueThink 411 Session Webinar that is being held Monday 10/26 from 5:30 - 6:00 PM. I know this might be tough after hours, but is anyone available to participate? We could meet anywhere there is wireless. If you can't make it, I can get everyone up to speed individually in the near future. If you can, you can get PD credit. I will put in for an hour total so you have time to explore. I will handle the paperwork and put it as 5:00 - 6:00 and we can get set up before the live webinar.?Let me know if you are interested in using CueThink on iPads this year, if 10/26 could work for a brief webinar (no worries if not), and your class sizes. Thanks!Michael DrezekWeb Site Issues? J.Barnes 11.10.15Good morning. The District web site is experiencing some slowness issues this morning. There is some confusion regarding attendance in PowerSchool. ?If you are teacher of record for a class you?MUST TAKE ATTENDANCE FOR THAT CLASS.Example, as ?a K-5 teacher you will see Elementary Homeroom and you may see ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies and Reading if you are the teacher of record - you?MUST TAKE separate attendance for?EACH?of these classes just like last year. ?Example, as a teacher of PE or Library or Music you?MUST TAKE attendance for each class you teach just like last year. This attendance is used by SED to calculate seat time when you have to verify your roster in the Spring. ?If you have any questions please email or call me.Google Chrome on Macbooks?? ? ? Mike Drezek 9.14.15?Many teachers have downloaded and started using Google Chrome as their main browser on their teacher Macbooks prior to the recent upgrades by the tech department. If so, you likely pinned the Chrome icon to the dock (all of the icons of applications at the bottom of the screen) for easy access. The recent image of the laptops did install the latest Google Chrome browser for everyone, however it does not appear in the dock by default. In order to place it there, follow these steps:From the desktop,1. Click Go2. Click Applications3. Scroll down to Google Chrome??and double click to launch4. Right click (Control & Click on Mac) on the Chrome icon now appearing in the dock and click Options --> Keep in DockIf you have any questions or need assistance, let me know!?Google Accounts? Jeff Barnes 9.10.15?Good morning. There is some confusion in regards to who creates and updates Google Accounts. Please submit a tech request if you need- a new teacher account- a new student account- passwords reset for teachers or studentsDO NOT send students to the building office, guidance or library for this account informationPlease submit a tech request for all things GoogleGoogle Education FAQ?Mike Drezek 9.3.15?After Tuesday's technology training sessions for both K-3 that were iPad focused and 4-12 that were Google Edu focused, several great questions were brought up by teachers. Hopefully this email will help to provide consistent information so teachers and staff are on the same page. From the feedback that was received it sounds like many are excited to try something new with Google Apps for Education this year.?Here are some questions/issues that came up:I am trying to set up a Google Account but am not recognized. At no time do you have to create your own account. One has to be established for you by the district. If for some reason you are not recognized, submit a tech request and an account will be created for you ASAP. Remember, your Lake Shore Google Account ends in @. A common error is to use @. If you are signed in under a personal Gmail account ending in @, simply click "Sign-In with a Different Account" or "Add Account" and enter your Lake Shore information.?How do students start using their accounts? The process is exactly the same as it is for teachers except their default password is lscsd_Student. From there?students will create a new password.A student in my class set up their account last year and forgot their password.?Send an email to the Lotus Notes group Lakeshore IT along with the student name & grade level and an account will be created for the student. If I am pushing into your classroom when you are setting up students, this can be done right on the spot. You could submit a tech request, but the Lakeshore IT email might get the issue resolved more quickly. Note: Sending email to Lakeshore IT is intended for Google password resets and Google account creations. All other issues should follow the standard tech request process.Do I really need to use the Google Chrome browser? No. Everything works in Firefox and Safari browsers however the user experience is much better in Chrome. You can also sign into your Chrome browser and access in?app support/training to better learn the tools. We encourage students to use this as well for the same reason. Is this account secure?Google Education is web-based.?With this, it is important that you sign out of your accounts when not using them.?A strong password is also a good idea. Your information and data are not public unless you share files/docs this way. When sharing documents, be mindful of the sharing settings as well as the level of access you allow to a document. These can be adjusted at anytime in the event you do something in error. Remember that when using Google on a mobile app through an iPad, tablet or phone that closing the app does not sign you out. You must click the gear wheel icon to access settings --> click Manage --> click Remove, in order to fully sign out. Many users put the iPad back on the cart without doing this only to have their accounts accessed by another student or teacher.GmailGrade 4-12 students have Gmail accounts through Lake Shore. They can only send and receive emails within the Lake Shore domain. Keep this in mind if students are signing up for programs online that require an email address. Nothing can come in from the outside world. This does not impact teachers. Teachers can send and receive email outside of the domain.?Can I just use Lotus Notes for email and ignore Lake Shore Gmail?Yes. You can also forward Lotus Notes email to your Gmail account if you prefer to have all email in one location. Some teachers that use Google Classroom (currently Grades 4-12) may prefer this since student notifications only appear here. You can avoid looking in two accounts this way. If you would like your Lotus Notes email forwarded to Gmail, please submit a tech request. There are some things that Jason Oliver can do behind the scenes to make this process seamless. Some Google Classroom Tips:- When naming classes, include the school year in the name. Example) English 9 (15-16). This will help if you plan to use Google Classroom next year.- Create a separate Course for each Section you teach and consider changing the theme to be unique for each section. You can even import your own class theme images.?- At the end of the school year, click "Archive Class" from the 3 dot icon on the Classes page. This takes it out of the student's view so that only courses from the current school year show. You can restore a class and it's full content at any point if needed.- When giving students a copy of a file for them to edit or complete as an assignment, do it as a Google Doc as opposed to Word. Feel free to attach Office, PDF and even audio or video files to an announcement or assignment. ?You can attach multiple files and web links for a single assignment.?- Remind students that if they are completing something that doesn't involve submitting a file to a teacher, they must click "Mark As Done"- DO NOT delete the folder in Google Drive titled Classroom. This contains all of your classes and student work.- If you have a student who struggles greatly with reading, encourage them to use Google Translate. It's included in all accounts as an app. Simply have them copy/paste the content, translate from English to English and click the speaker. Passages and content will be read aloud to the student.?- Get creative with Google Classroom. Organize a section here for a club or extra-curricular group to expand conversations and share information.?Please know that you can always find support from myself, online at?, resource sites in our Google Classroom section (join code - rvos7bp), and even from the students (they pick up on this tech stuff quickly). I would be more than happy to sit down with you 1-on-1 or with a group of teachers at a common time. I could also push into your classroom and assist students in learning more within Google Education. Also, if you learn a new tip, trick or tool, please share. I'd love to hear about it.?If you sign into your Google Accounts today or from here out, you will notice some updates were released yesterday afternoon. There are now templates in Docs/Sheets/Slides which may be useful for a class newsletter. Google Forms received a makeover, making surveys look nicer. There is also a speech to text dictation tool in Google Docs that accepts 40 languages. This may be an added benefit to a student that might have a special need or require assistive technology. Learn out the new updates?here?and?here. Some New Math Resources?Mike Drezek 4.7.15?Hello everyone,I came across a couple of potentially helpful math resources that I wanted to share. You may already have used these, but just in case: This is a custom Google search that seeks out lesson ideas from just about every math teacher that keeps a current blog about their classroom. Try searching for a topic you teach and see what is returned. It also links to each math blog directly. I always found that it helps to see what other teachers are doing. The menu at the left of the page also offers some additional resources. Teachers included are from a wide range of grade levels. Free lessons and activities that are Common Core aligned. All problems involve real world contexts. Collection of videos that many say are an improvement from Khan Academy. Over 400K subscribers with over 120 million views. Topics range from Algebra to Discrete Math. Who needs Redbox? Just kidding. I know YouTube is currently blocked, but I figured this site could be helpful to students needing some extra help. You could always add specific links to your websites that students could access at home. Also did you know you can now measure distance between two points on Google Maps? I had no idea.?Check it out, CueThink Math is free through July 31st (). It will be added to the iPad carts this month. This works with ANY grade level. If you would like to give this a try with your students and need help getting it set up, let me know. I have used this for the past two years and it is a great tool. The app itself is always free, but this gives you access to the teacher dashboard to add your own content, which makes it more useful. It is a great way to see how they think and to share their work with classmates. They recently partnered with Drexel's Math Forum and integrate their Problems of the Week. This year all students will have access to Seesaw, a tool for student driven digital portfolios, highlighting all of the AWESOME that takes place in your class. It also offers a great way to boost student engagement, increase ownership of learning, build positive relationships with parents as well as connect classrooms across the district or even across the globe. It works on any device and is user friendly enough for Kindergartners to use successfully. At the end of the year, parents can download their child's portfolio. *Parents can only view work for their own child(ren). You can invite them once portfolios begin to grow or when you feel comfortable.?We are finalizing the behind the scenes setup at this time. You will receive an email in the near future from Seesaw (once it is setup for Lake Shore) asking you to activate your account. I encourage you to take advantage of this resource! I will be aiming to get into classrooms to support this learning tool as well as host professional development on Seesaw. They also regularly host "PD in your PJs" online webinars to support teachers. Here is some more info if you are curious in learning more:? are their current PD offerings if you would like to submit pre-approval to Christine Starks for participating in any sessions: hope that you find Seesaw useful and can't wait to see some of the awesome things students create within their portfolios.
