I will start by focusing on the making of the shield, the main use, their look and history. This is to help establish concepts and a final asset. Materials and Building of the ShieldThe main materials used in in making a Greek shield were perishable materials so not a lot survived over the years. the main sources information has been vases and written documentation over the years but there's has been enough information to go on to understand the materials and how to build the Shield I got lot of my information on this from a video link here on how to build and design the shield I found it extremely helpful and I found in making the shield myself in blender understanding how you actually made it made the process so much easier for me to understand how to start. the main materials used was Willow wood, Popular wood, Bronze and hide which would have been abundant around the areas the Shields were made.Gold Texture Popular Wood Texture Bronze Texture323850020210780003543300762000118110076200left7620003743325847725002943225952500293370024288751basic design of early hoplite shield. Notice rounded bowl shape and distinctive porpax.DesignAbove all, the one iconic symbol and piece of equipment of the Greek hoplite was the hoplite shield. ?Called the?hoplon?in the Classical Age Greece, it has also been regarded as the most distinguishable part of the hoplite (see Ferrill 1985, 101). ?Original hoplite shields would traditionally be constructed out of carved wood, that is until the Spartans completely encased their shields in bronze in 425 B.C. (see Ferrill 1985, 101). Crucial to the hoplite shield design was the concave, “bowl shape” of the shield. On the inside of the shield was a form of “double grip”. ?The?porpax?was the strap in the center of the shield that a hoplite would rest his forearm in. ?The?antilabe?was a grip on the outside of the shield in which a hand could grasp. The design of the shields of the time will mainly adorned with emblems on the front relating to their Greek city state the problem is with this not a lot of information has survived over the years to get an accurate depiction of what the exact symbols would have been used on the front or patterns used around the sides, but for the patterns for the side of the shield we can kind of get a bit of an understanding of what it would have been from some of the artwork from the time that has survived. the most of my research for the symbols on the front of the Shields have been from other games and movies and some researchers opinions but I mainly wanted to keep my shield unique to my style and not totally accurate to how it would have been but still keeping to the basic design of the Shield.Hoplite Warrior354838011430Most of the reference for the shield focuses on hoplites who would have used the shield I’m trying to create I found the websites and other games below really helped me envision the asset I’m trying to create. 4000020000Most of the reference for the shield focuses on hoplites who would have used the shield I’m trying to create I found the websites and other games below really helped me envision the asset I’m trying to create. 01905A?hoplite?(from?ta hopla?meaning tool or equipment) was the most common type of heavily armed foot-soldier in ancient?Greece?from the 7th to 4th centuries BCE, and most ordinary citizens of?Greek?city-states with sufficient means were expected to equip and make themselves available for the role when necessary. Assassins Creed OdysseyUse in Battle SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 1[3] Two Greek hoplites engaged in battle utilizing the hoplite shield.Primarily, the shield serves as protection for the hoplite that holds it, as well as the hoplite to his immediate left. ?The double grip method of holding the shield offers protection on the centre and left side of the body, but leaves the right side of the body exposed, unless the hoplite utilizes the extra, redundant portion of the shield owned by the hoplite to the right of him. ?Allowing a hoplite to utilize the extra portion of his fellow combatant’s shield would also imply that the hoplite phalanx would have a tendency to move right when advancing in. ?Thucydides mentions the right step motion in his account of the Battle of Manitea in 418 B.C. ?Thucydides states that all Greek armies are alike in their tendency to step right when engaging in battle, as hoplites would out of fear move to cover their unprotected sides with the left half of the hoplite next to them. ?The fact that Thucydides mentions the rightward motion of the phalanx due to the?hoplon?cannot be ignored. ?An action so significant that a Greek general would mention it in his writings suggests a uniqueness to the motion and the phalanx itself, and contributed to the phalanx emerging as a battle formation unlike anything the world had ever seen before.Tactics2 Spartan hoplitesThe Greek hoplite phalanx was a highly trained unit.? Every decision had to go through a chain of command, like the military today.? This meant that hoplites had highly coordinated movements, which would be needed for a fighting force of that size.? Even with everything planned out, hoplite combat would be very intense and confusing experience when the fighting started.Pinterest BIBLIOGRAPHY Cartwright, M. (2003, 02 09). holpite.
