00:00:32:05

STEVE SANDS: Good to have you with us. From Boise, Idaho, Hillcrest Country Club, the 31-year home for the longest running sponsor on the Korn Ferry Tour, the Albertson's Boise Open on a gorgeous Thursday. Very little wind to speak of. We should see a lot of tremendous scoring. Birdies and eagles will be flying all over this golf course, which does not reach 7,000 yards. Good afternoon. I'm Steve Sands. So pleased to be alongside Craig Perks once again. Phil Blackmar will join us to call some holes. Gary Christian lucky enough to be down on the ground following one of these lead groups in the afternoon wave.

00:01:10:17

STEVE SANDS: As we go out to the 9th and get right over to Phil Blackmar.

00:01:13:13

PHIL BLACKMAR: And good afternoon. Adam Svensson here with his second. [club swing] He's hit every green so far in regulation. Today our leader. And again he did, as well. And there's his first miss on this little par 4, just a 420-yard par 4.

00:01:27:22

STEVE SANDS: At the 8th, McDaniel out of the rough.

00:01:35:26

MALE: Great shot, Chip.

00:01:36:01

CHIP MCDANIEL: Thank you. You don't get the nickname "Chip" for no reason. That's probably chip-in number seven since the restart.

00:01:51:10

MALE: Yeah. [chuckle] That's a great job, bud.

00:01:51:18

CHIP MCDANIEL: Thank you.

00:01:53:26

CRAIG PERKS: His actual real name is Tyler. But his parents named him after Chipper Jones from the Atlanta Braves. But chip them in. Save some strokes. Well done.

00:02:03:20

STEVE SANDS: The aptly-named McDaniel.

00:02:05:28

CHIP MCDANIEL: Like, all I had to do was put it in the back of the stance and chop at it.

00:02:08:29

PHIL BLACKMAR: Back to the 5th now. And Ernst has this left for his par. Missed the green. Chipped to this point. To stay 7 under. [cup rattles] There you go.

00:02:24:08

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. And I'll tell you what. It was sharply hit from insi--in the trees. It was the best of the three. And that was really tough, the lie. To judge that distance was magnificent. [putter clicks] [cup rattles]

00:02:38:06

PHIL BLACKMAR: He has a very unique style. Closed, with his feet open, with his shoulders. And then a saw grip. And it seems to be working nicely for him.

00:02:46:27

PHIL BLACKMAR: To the 11th now and Jared Wolfe with his second. [club swing]

00:02:56:13

PHIL BLACKMAR: Tenth in the Points Race. He's another guy that would be headed to the PGA Tour. He's been playing very well. He made six consecutive cuts. Very consistent play.

00:03:05:05

STEVE SANDS: Back at 10, and Davis Riley. With all that power, Gary, he has a long birdie try here at this short par-4 10th.

00:03:12:22

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yes, he does. Right around 60 feet, straight up the hill. And now the wind just picking up just enough to, to about 10 miles an hour now. So it makes it a little trickier. [putter clicks]

00:03:29:27

STEVE SANDS: Did he get it there? He did. And, oh, it's right on line. [chuckle] How about that?

00:03:32:22

CRAIG PERKS: The iron--

00:03:32:27

STEVE SANDS: See that, Craig?

00:03:33:29

CRAIG PERKS: The iron off the tee was just the right play.

00:03:35:02

STEVE SANDS: Low iron off the tee.

00:03:37:13

CRAIG PERKS: Get out of here.

00:03:38:20

STEVE SANDS: Oh, if we could just put a headset on him, he would talk to you and say, "What driver? Who needs a driver?"

00:03:41:20

CRAIG PERKS: [Overlap] "Get--get out of here." Yeah. That's stealing, right there.

00:03:47:03

STEVE SANDS: For those who follow the Korn Ferry Tour and for those of you who are new to the Korn Ferry Tour, this kid's gonna be something else.

00:03:53:25

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah.

00:03:53:29

STEVE SANDS: On the PGA Tour. When he gets out there, look out for that name. Remember it. He is a--a star in the making.

00:04:01:04

CRAIG PERKS: He has that game that translates so well. Justin Thomas is his mentor. They both went to--to Alabama. And absolutely, 100 percent agree with you. He has--every part of his game is Tour quality right now.

00:04:14:19

STEVE SANDS: Buckley now for his birdie at 10, underneath the hole. [cup rattles]

00:04:23:07

HAYDEN BUCKLEY: Thanks. All right.

00:04:29:16

PHIL BLACKMAR: Back to the 11th now and Zalatoris for birdie.

00:04:33:16

GARY CHRISTIAN: Well, it's interesting, Phil, isn't it? We've made mention of maybe not quite looking as comfortable on the shorter ones. But he's made some incredible progress, going from 146th in Putting to 62nd. So certainly turned a weakness into, you know, you would almost say a strength now. And hopefully trending in the right direction where he can keep getting better.

00:04:51:17

PHIL BLACKMAR: Yeah. We say that he's uncomfortable because we don't like what it looks like. But we don't know what he's feeling. He might like what this is feeling like. And that's a good putt, right there. [cup rattles]

00:05:01:12

PHIL BLACKMAR: You know, Gary Player had no follow-through. It wasn't quite as abrupt. But he stopped the putter as soon as he hit it.

00:05:07:05

STEVE SANDS: He had a pretty good career.

00:05:08:02

PHIL BLACKMAR: He did okay.

00:05:08:17

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:05:10:22

STEVE SANDS: Up to 12 now. Let's see what Justin Lower can do here. [club swing] [ball thunk]

00:05:24:04

STEVE SANDS: Oh, how about it? Nice shot.

00:05:33:07

STEVE SANDS: Now Lower. You can't see the hole. But you might be able to tell by the reaction if it goes down.

00:05:39:15

PHIL BLACKMAR: Back at the 3rd, Derek Ernst has this for birdie. He's made three in a row. This is for four in a row and to get to 7 under in his round. Count it.

00:05:50:25

CRAIG PERKS: He pulled along by Kevin Daugherty.

00:05:57:06

STEVE SANDS: Wolfe for eagle at 16. Speaking of impressive [music], how about a 3 on the card for Jared? That's his second eagle of the day. He got a 2 on the 1st, as we continue to see low scores out there in Boise. [music]

00:06:18:28

PHIL BLACKMAR: [Putter clicks] That's the birdie effort for Kevin Daugherty with a big backswing [chuckle], trying to hit it far enough. What a beautiful putt. Judged his distance nicely. He hit that about as hard as he hit some of his drives, I think, to get it back there.

00:06:34:26

PHIL BLACKMAR: And Ernst has this left for his par. Missed the green, chipped to this point. [putter clicks] To stay 7 under. [cup rattles] There you go.

00:06:43:20

MALE: Nice.

00:06:47:08

PHIL BLACKMAR: Good putt.

00:06:48:25

STEVE SANDS: 17.

00:06:50:00

PHIL BLACKMAR: And Albertson for birdie. Also a pretty long effort left here.

00:07:01:03

PHIL BLACKMAR: Surprisingly here at the 17th, 135 yards, altitude, it's playing 128 yards. It would be just a--probably a sand wedge for most of these guys. And that will be the 21st birdie. You would think there would be more. Nice putt there for Anders gets him to minus 4, three in a row.

00:07:20:17

STEVE SANDS: At 16, now.

00:07:23:00

CRAIG PERKS: This would be for his eighth birdie of the day, get him to 5 under. Oh. Walk it in. There you go.

00:07:30:05

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:07:33:18

STEVE SANDS: 18, Chris. There you go. That's how you finish your day, with a birdie at 18.

00:07:41:13

STEVE SANDS: We are just getting things started. Round 1 is almost complete at the Albertsons Boise Open. Tommy Gainey is the man to beat so far out in beautiful Boise. [music]

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:08:01:18

STEVE SANDS: Another gorgeous August day greets us in Idaho for Round 2 of the Albertsons Boise Open, one of just four events on the Korn Ferry Tour schedule that has been saved in all 31 years of this Tour's existence. We have some highlights to pass along. More good scoring. Excellent play from one of the best out there, Davis Riley. Birdie at 2. Gets him to 9 under par. He would finish the day at 10 under par.

00:08:27:26

STEVE SANDS: Steve Sands pleased to be alongside Craig Perks once again. And there's Davis. And then there's the number one man heading into this Championship Series, Will Zalatoris.

00:08:37:18

CRAIG PERKS: He played an eight-hole stretch in the Second Round 6 under par. The--well, the 23-year-old Number 1 on the Points List. He's shown again this week.

00:08:46:22

STEVE SANDS: How about Jimmy Stanger? [club swing] How about this tee shot at 8?

00:08:50:29

CRAIG PERKS: 8, the difficult par 3. 205 yards today to a back-left [ball thunk] hole location. Has not been playing well of late. Four missed cuts last six starts. But got something going on this week.

00:09:03:17

STEVE SANDS: Made a birdie there to move to 11 under par.

00:09:05:21

STEVE SANDS: Adam Svensson trying to get 11 at the 7th.

00:09:08:28

CRAIG PERKS: You've gotta make plenty of birdies and some eagles thrown in there. Four birdies and an eagle in a round of 66 for the Canadian.

00:09:16:10

STEVE SANDS: And Charlie Saxon, his second here at 15. How about this shot?

00:09:21:10

CRAIG PERKS: Well, he--[club swing] this hole is imminently drivable. He's decided to lay it up. Hole location up on the back shelf. Using the backstop. Guy loves it. Boy, does he have--the second-to-last group on Saturday last year. So loves Hillcrest.

00:09:39:01

STEVE SANDS: Everybody loves this golf course, where you can go really low. And there is a triumphant at 11 under par right now leading the way. Day 2 of the Albertsons Boise Open. So glad to have you with us.

00:09:52:10

STEVE SANDS: Here's Andrew Novak's third shot [club swing] at the 6th from the wrong fairway.

00:09:57:05

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. Completely the wrong spot. Got to come up and over a tree. At least he has green--

00:10:00:24

STEVE SANDS: How about this shot?

00:10:00:28

CRAIG PERKS: --to use. No, he didn't.

00:10:02:14

STEVE SANDS: Come on.

00:10:03:13

CRAIG PERKS: No, he didn't.

00:10:03:20

STEVE SANDS: [Laugh] Oh, man. What a shot.

00:10:07:01

CRAIG PERKS: Holed out in 3.

00:10:07:23

STEVE SANDS: You might see that a little a little bit later during our "Shots of the Day." I highly doubt you'll see anything better than that. What a shot.

00:10:17:01

STEVE SANDS: In this group, Mike Duff. We'll be hearing all of the entertainment inside the ropes during competition. Very nice of these gentlemen to allow us into their space as they work.

00:10:41:11

STEVE SANDS: [Cup rattles] Yeah. That's three in a row for Taylor. Now Etulain's third from that bunker, Gary.

00:10:51:29

GARY CHRISTIAN: The ball just a little above his feet. It came in a little bit low.

00:10:58:00

STEVE SANDS: Back at 16 now, with Saxon.

00:11:01:13

GARY CHRISTIAN: A very simple bunker shot from a great lie. [club swing]

00:11:08:27

CRAIG PERKS: And excellent result.

00:11:10:22

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:11:17:08

PHIL BLACKMAR: Ender Novak at 13 now. [club swing]

00:11:31:11

ENDER NOVAK: Please be right. Please. [ball thunk]

00:11:34:09

PHIL BLACKMAR: What a beautiful shot. Look at this. Only a couple of feet from the hole. Spectacular shot.

00:11:47:07

STEVE SANDS: But this year because of the Coronavirus Pandemic they changed this three series of events to the Championship Series on the Korn Ferry Tour. It's 144 players this week in Boise.

00:11:58:24

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. And those Finals were so compelling. You know, 25 players got their Tour Cards in the Regular Season, the conclusion in Portland. And then we go to the--what used to be four events. Now they're three. But you think of a player like Julian Etulain. Right now 134th. If he had been in that position on a regular year, he would have been going back to Q School. That obviously gets to play this week and next. The field is reduced to 120 on the Points List for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship. And then will, uh, maintain his status for the 2021 Season.

00:12:38:13

STEVE SANDS: Is it enough? Oh, it runs out of gas. The Korn Ferry Tour, the PGA Tour, under the umbrella there. Alex Baldwin, the entire staff [cup rattles] did an amazing job to get things together after things seemingly were gonna go awry for these players. All the opportunities they're having in this Championship Series is gonna prove to be excellent.

00:13:01:18

CRAIG PERKS: Ten events cancelled. 23 events total are gonna be played in sort of a re-imagined wraparound season. Five more events after the the Korn Ferry Tour Championship.

00:13:11:07

STEVE SANDS: And Thompson from the other side of the hole. [cup rattles] And his birdie. That could be a big one, right there.

00:13:17:20

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. He's got a--sort of a sigh of relief for Curtis. He got off to a great start early in the season. 3rd at the event that was supposed to be played at Abaco. 10th in Panama. In the last ten events, four missed cuts and 32nd his best finish. So start maybe see some signs.

00:13:39:00

STEVE SANDS: Now Charlie Saxon. Not a ton in this, is there, Gary?

00:13:43:29

GARY CHRISTIAN: No. It's just straight back up the hill. Dead straight putt.

00:13:59:18

CRAIG PERKS: Well, he's one that's sort of backing up the theory. 63 the first day. Now gets to 4 under today. He's got two more birdie opportunities. So he could follow up that low number with another really good round today. Obviously, now, with the lead.

00:14:15:21

PHIL BLACKMAR: Now back to the 15th. Silverman trying to tap this in for his birdie after a nice tee shot just off the edge of the green. [cup rattles] Well done.

00:14:28:22

CRAIG PERKS: Shot 62 that first day to begin. But even par today. He talked about the inconsistencies of the season. Won the very first event of the year. Five missed cuts in his last eight starts. And 21st on the Points List. And hallelujah. He got--he got us a birdie on this back nine.

00:14:45:11

STEVE SANDS: Second upcoming up here at 14 for Novak.

00:14:53:28

CRAIG PERKS: Hole location, front left. [club swing] There is a falloff at the front part of this green.

00:14:59:07

ANDREW NOVAK: Wind. Is that good? Or is that deep?

00:15:05:20

MALE: It's a little long.

00:15:06:29

ANDREW NOVAK: It's long? Ah.

00:15:13:15

MALE: [Unintelligible]

00:15:13:29

ANDREW NOVAK: Uh, I can't--it's, like sit--no. I can't really tell. I think--I kind of juiced it at the bottom again, gave it a little extra.

00:15:22:13

STEVE SANDS: Back to 14. Kocher has a birdie putt. [putter clicks]

00:15:32:05

CRAIG PERKS: Gentle float down the hill.

00:15:34:21

MALE: Yeah.

00:15:35:02

STEVE SANDS: Oh, yeah. Fear the turtle.

00:15:37:12

DAVID KOCHER: Thank you.

00:15:38:16

STEVE SANDS: A Maryland Terrapin.

00:15:39:22

CRAIG PERKS: He got off to such a dreadful start. He was 6 over for his first four holes.

00:15:45:14

DAVID KOCHER: Getting positive.

00:15:47:26

CRAIG PERKS: Need to find something for next week.

00:15:50:09

DAVID KOCHER: I need--oh, crap. I've got the lucky fist pump.

00:15:56:18

CRAIG PERKS: A winner already this season. 13th on the Points List.

00:16:01:13

DAVID KOCHER: I actually beat it.

00:16:04:29

PHIL BLACKMAR: The 15th. Stephan Jaeger for birdie to get him to 11 under par. Yep. [clapping]

00:16:21:13

STEVE SANDS: Back at 14 with Novak.

00:16:24:12

CRAIG PERKS: How about the double bounce-back? Phil mentioned the double at 12, bogey 30 at 13. How about another one here? Erase them all in a hurry.

00:16:32:02

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:16:33:04

CRAIG PERKS: How about it? [cup rattles] [clapping]

00:16:34:03

ANDREW NOVAK: Thanks.

00:16:40:09

ANDREW NOVAK: Thank you. I know. Yeah. But if you double and then birdie the next two after, it's a super bounceback. It's called a super bounceback.

00:16:52:29

CRAIG PERKS: There you go.

00:16:55:07

MALE: Well, really good double bounceback.

00:16:56:23

ANDREW NOVAK: Yeah. It's on ShotLink. Look it up.

00:16:57:26

MALE: Okay.

00:16:57:26

ANDREW NOVAK: It's on there. You're find it.

00:17:00:11

CRAIG PERKS: [Chuckle]

00:17:03:22

PHIL BLACKMAR: To the 15th now, Greyson Sigg for birdie. That's gonna turn to the left real quick once it starts turning down the hill. Looks pretty good. Yes, it does.

00:17:22:14

GARY CHRISTIAN: Straight up the hill here. Oh, a good-looking line, isn't it?

00:17:27:04

CRAIG PERKS: Oh. How about that to get to 8 under?

00:17:33:11

STEVE SANDS: A couple of rounds in the 60s.

00:17:34:19

CRAIG PERKS: Yes, sir. For a guy that's been struggling all year, that'll give you a little jolt.

00:17:41:27

STEVE SANDS: Back at 16. Birdie and a tie for the lead for Jaeger. Then there were two at 12 under.

00:17:51:29

CRAIG PERKS: This guy had shot 58 on this Tour.

00:17:55:02

STEVE SANDS: 16 again. Another one in the fairway. A short iron in his hand. Greyson Sigg.

00:18:01:02

CRAIG PERKS: Take it right up the [club swing] throat of the green into that gentle cut. Really take the flagstick on from where Greyson has driven it. Oh. A chance for the fifth eagle of the day at the easiest hole on the golf course.

00:18:16:18

STEVE SANDS: Tommy Gainey. After that 62 yesterday, we were wondering what was gonna happen today. And to sum it up in a sentence, not much.

00:18:32:16

STEVE SANDS: Now Marty Dou.

00:18:35:27

CRAIG PERKS: The 23-year-old, make this, shoot 65.

00:18:40:02

STEVE SANDS: There you go.

00:18:41:02

CRAIG PERKS: Has won a couple of times on this Tour. He gets in 8 under through 36.

00:18:48:00

CRAIG PERKS: That's exactly what he did on 14, judge it coming out of the rough to that front hole location. [club swing]

00:18:55:16

GOLFER: Go.

00:19:00:12

CRAIG PERKS: Oh, magnificent.

00:19:01:25

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:19:03:21

GOLFER: That turned out better than I expected.

00:19:06:09

STEVE SANDS: That's just a fabulous golf shot.

00:19:09:04

CRAIG PERKS: You saw that graphic. Consecutive finishes, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd. Really quite remarkable. And he's in 4th on the Points List, which got him in the U.S. Open.

00:19:20:20

STEVE SANDS: Now Stephan Jaeger [club swing], one of the leaders at 12 under par, left rough at 18.

00:19:26:03

STEPHAN JAEGER: Fly a little.

00:19:26:03

CRAIG PERKS: Ten--ten yards up the hill, coming out of the rough. Terrible angle.

00:19:29:16

STEVE SANDS: Oh, look at this.

00:19:29:19

CRAIG PERKS: And a great result.

00:19:34:04

STEVE SANDS: He could be the first to get to a baker's dozen under par.

00:19:37:10

CRAIG PERKS: Make that 15 birdies through 36 holes.

00:19:41:02

PHIL BLACKMAR: The 15th. Dan McCarthy with a chance for birdie. Get to 7 under. And that went in with spirit, like a rabbit looking for a hole to dive into, right there.

00:19:58:24

STEVE SANDS: Not bad considering the position he was in off the tee. It could be a really nice 4.

00:20:13:22

CRAIG PERKS: Just enough of left-to-right movement downslope to get his full attention. [cup rattles]

00:20:23:25

STEVE SANDS: Okay.

00:20:24:20

GOLFER: Thanks. Thanks. Yep.

00:20:34:10

CRAIG PERKS: Disastrous start with a 6 at the 2nd. Take advantage of those back-to-back par 5s. [cup rattles]

00:21:01:02

STEVE SANDS: Okay.

00:21:07:01

CRAIG PERKS: Showing some resiliency there with double at 12, three birdies in the next four holes. Give him a hat tip for that.

00:21:19:00

STEVE SANDS: Now Jaeger to take the lead all to himself.

00:21:23:06

CRAIG PERKS: And it's the same thing Phil mentioned about the--the hole in the shade, the nuance of the break. No problem.

00:21:34:11

GOLFER: You think it's gonna be this far?

00:21:35:29

MALE: Yeah.

00:21:39:29

PHIL BLACKMAR: Gary Christian has joined this group. This is Rodriguez. [club swing]

00:21:43:23

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. Just trying to hit a little trap draw around the trees. But he's lost that right. And it's gonna be quite a putt across this green.

00:21:54:18

PHIL BLACKMAR: Yes, it will. Gets just into the deeper rough.

00:21:59:25

PHIL BLACKMAR: Let's head back to the 3rd, now. Brad Hopfinger. Eagled the 2nd. This is an eagle chip. Oh, cut it out. Eagle, eagle. [clapping]

00:22:19:13

STEVE SANDS: Now Kocher. It has not been a great couple of days for David. [putter clicks] See if he can get out of here with a birdie.

00:22:27:12

CRAIG PERKS: And hah.

00:22:27:15

STEVE SANDS: How about that?

00:22:28:18

DAVID KOCHER: Thanks.

00:22:30:14

STEVE SANDS: Now Hopfinger for a good two-putt here at 4.

00:22:50:16

STEVE SANDS: Back-to-back eagles, Craig. The rarest of birds, there. [music] That is spectacular from Brad. Stephan Jaeger safely in the clubhouse already with a Round 2 64 for the man from Munich, Germany. Charlie Saxon, we saw him all throughout the afternoon, played very, very well, is in position once again, Craig, to make a run at a title for the first time on the Korn Ferry Tour.

00:23:18:10

CRAIG PERKS: And he talked to Gary. Uh, he had the lead through 36 holes last week. He took away nothing but positive. Just proposed to his girlfriend. She said yes, thank you. I--I'd watch out for Stephan Jaeger. The guy's won four times on this Tour. He's shot 58. Not afraid to go low. And he's had 15 birdies and 2 eagles in 36 holes.

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:23:49:05

STEVE SANDS: Boise, Idaho, Hillcrest Country Club. What a gorgeous venue. Beautiful day. High in the 90s. Very little humidity. And zero wind to speak of. More low scores. Expect a lot of birdie chances and some eagles, as well, in this Third Round of the Albertsons Boise Open. Steve Sands pleased to be alongside Craig Perks once again. Phil Blackmar, Gary Christian will join us in a couple of minutes, as well. It should be a blast today, Craig. It should be so much fun to watch these guys get after it.

00:24:22:03

STEVE SANDS: And Phil Blackmar, you are on the 5th hole.

00:24:24:11

PHIL BLACKMAR: And this is Stephan Jaeger, off to a good start, Gary.

00:24:29:19

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. He's had a little bit of experience in these circumstances. Good effort there.

00:24:37:21

PHIL BLACKMAR: He has performed well when he's had the 36-hole lead, winning twice out of three times. This is his fourth time.

00:24:50:07

STEVE SANDS: To 12. Greyson Sigg is looking at a birdie putt.

00:24:54:28

CRAIG PERKS: Got off to a great start today. 3 under through three holes, 4 under through six. It's imperative to get off to a good start at Hillcrest. The first holes are--there's a warm handshake, back-to-back par-5s at 2 and 3. The difficulty of this golf course is really 3--I mean, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. And make the turn. And then there's plenty of opportunities.

00:25:30:11

CRAIG PERKS: Greyson having a really good-looking season. Made it through Q School for the first time, put him in a really good frame of mind. Currently 20th on the Points List.

00:25:41:18

STEVE SANDS: Well, look at that golf ball right in front of the green, Gary Christian. That was some drive.

00:25:47:02

GARY CHRISTIAN: Well, this is why I say, this is an un--underrated hole, because it does give you the option. If you want to take it over the corner, it's actually relatively wide way down there with the driver. This is gonna be 65 yards for Jaeger. Plenty of green to work with. I can imagine he'll be knocking this within 10 feet quite comfortably.

00:26:05:01

CRAIG PERKS: 17 birdies he's had this week. You see him leading the par 4 Scoring Average. Streaky player. [club swing] Not afraid to go out and put his foot on peoples' throats. He's won four times on this Tour. Good shot.

00:26:20:16

STEVE SANDS: Like that little drive and pitch. There you go. Six feet for birdie.

00:26:25:14

CRAIG PERKS: And you wonder why people are laying up on 10. This hole is 414. And he got it within 60 yards.

00:26:29:26

STEVE SANDS: Will--will you make a note of that? Ten minutes into our coverage here.

00:26:32:19

CRAIG PERKS: [Chuckle] We're not even to the 10th.

00:26:34:04

STEVE SANDS: And we're not even at the 10th hole.

00:26:34:25

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah.

00:26:34:25

STEVE SANDS: And Craig's already fired up about it.

00:26:37:01

CRAIG PERKS: Throwing--throwing out a salvo.

00:26:37:18

STEVE SANDS: Will they go for that green off the tee today?

00:26:40:00

CRAIG PERKS: I'm not--with no wind? I'm not sure they will. They have moved the tee back--

00:26:43:19

STEVE SANDS: Come on, Craig.

00:26:44:20

CRAIG PERKS: --to 350 today.

00:26:45:17

STEVE SANDS: Well, so what? Give it a blast.

00:26:46:28

CRAIG PERKS: It's an iron in the rough and a wedge to 30 feet.

00:26:50:20

STEVE SANDS: Phil, do you agree with that?

00:26:51:28

PHIL BLACKMAR: It's a driver hole all the way. It's the only [club swing] club you should hit.

00:26:54:02

STEVE SANDS: There you go.

00:26:54:10

PHIL BLACKMAR: I wouldn't consider anything else. And you should always go for 15, also. That is Will Zalatoris on the 8th. Craig mentioned Jaeger was leading the par-4 Scoring. Will Zalatoris is leading in a better stat, points. Number 1 on the Points List.

00:27:10:26

STEVE SANDS: Now here is that birdie try. And what a well-played hole so far, Gary.

00:27:16:24

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. So we can finish him off here from four-and-a-half feet.

00:27:19:28

STEVE SANDS: Yep. [cup rattles] How is that?

00:27:24:17

CRAIG PERKS: Well, you know, drive it down there, take your time. It's--the way that the hole is laid out, pitch it within five feet, and make it. I mean, he's--I'll tell you what. Leading the field in birdies. He's leading the field in driving accuracy, which is giving him all of those opportunities.

00:27:40:04

STEVE SANDS: 14, again in that left rough, here is Cameron Young.

00:27:43:15

CRAIG PERKS: There's no tree trouble from just off the fairway. And again, back hole location [club swing] not too problematic with a wedge. He's not gonna stop it out of that lie. [ball thunk]

00:27:58:22

CRAIG PERKS: Well-judged.

00:27:59:18

STEVE SANDS: Tremendous shot out of that rough.

00:28:06:20

STEVE SANDS: Now Jaeger with his first real test of the day in this Third Round, isn't it, Gary?

00:28:13:05

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. It certainly is. He's--I mean, to this point, he's putted absolutely beautifully. And he's sitting at 2nd in--with the putting statistics coming into the round.

00:28:22:12

GARY CHRISTIAN: You know, I was talking to him earlier on. And he said because he's hitting the ball better he's freed up his putting stroke. He's just not been worried about the ball striking quite so much as he was last week. And now he's got a lot more freedom and confidence in this stroke. Pretty straight putt from here.

00:28:42:10

STEVE SANDS: Yeah. Exactly what you were just talking about. Boy, he looked comfortable standing over that golf ball. And that was a heck of a save for Stephan. And he remains the leader by 2. And his scorecard remains bogey-free.

00:29:02:28

STEVE SANDS: Yep. Another one drops.

00:29:11:26

CRAIG PERKS: To Zalatoris, his second at the 12th. [club swing] Just one under par on the round, the 23-year-old. Accessible hole location here. [ball thunk] Best iron player on Tour. Leads the Tour in Greens in Regulation. 70 or 83 percent. And he hits a lot of irons hole high. Another one there at the 12th.

00:29:33:17

PHIL BLACKMAR: Back to the 17th now. And long birdie putt for Cameron Young. Just his third start on the year on the Korn Ferry Tour. And he just made that putt. What a putt. Across the green. [music] Cameron Young moves to 18 under par. He is your leader here in the Third Round. And they're really going. A lot of golf left, though. Stay with us. Stephan Jaeger may have something to say about that here shortly.

00:30:04:08

STEVE SANDS: Back at 12 with Jaeger, trying to cut that deficit in half.

00:30:10:16

GARY CHRISTIAN: This pushes on and comes back left at the end. Did he judge it? Looks good.

00:30:14:09

CRAIG PERKS: Oh.

00:30:14:25

STEVE SANDS: Oh, yeah.

00:30:15:13

CRAIG PERKS: Good call, Gary. First birdie in his previous five holes. Now that gets him within one.

00:30:26:09

CRAIG PERKS: And Gary had mentioned that--an hour on digital, he said ball-striking has really improved. So it has freed up the stroke. Look at that. Just beautiful rotation of the face, holding the finish. And that thing is rolling as pure as possible. Drip it in the front edge. Perfect speed. Love the intensity. Look at them eyes.

00:30:53:14

STEVE SANDS: Now Hopfinger for his par. And Gary, after bogeys at 7 and 8, he made a birdie at 11. It seems like he's righted the ship.

00:31:01:24

GARY CHRISTIAN: Well, this will tell a lot about how much he's righted it. Another good-looking putt. [cup rattles]

00:31:05:25

STEVE SANDS: Yeah.

00:31:06:27

GARY CHRISTIAN: Nicely done.

00:31:08:03

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. That was an awful wedge shot to miss the gre--green that badly. Great save. Momentum saver.

00:31:17:10

STEVE SANDS: To 13 we go.

00:31:19:00

PHIL BLACKMAR: And Saxon for birdie from down off the front of the green.

00:31:27:22

PHIL BLACKMAR: Uphill pretty much the whole way. It may be moving just a little bit to his left. Okay. He's got some birdie holes coming up, some short irons coming up. 14 with a good drive is a short iron. 15, 16, both short.

00:31:49:01

STEVE SANDS: 16 with Brandon Wu. He's miked up for us today.

00:31:54:18

CRAIG PERKS: Be very aggressive. Putting straight up the hill. He's birdied 14 and 15. Can he eagle 16?

00:31:59:16

STEVE SANDS: Yes.

00:32:00:11

CRAIG PERKS: He can. That gets him within 2.

00:32:11:18

STEVE SANDS: Now just like Cameron Young, birdie/birdie/eagle.

00:32:13:17

STEVE SANDS: Now Stephan Jaeger to grab a share of the lead, Gary. [cup rattles]

00:32:21:10

GOLFER: Well done.

00:32:21:21

STEVE SANDS: That is a very well-played par 4 14th for Jaeger. And then there were two at 18 under par.

00:32:27:28

CRAIG PERKS: Just remember, this guy has the all-time Scoring Record on the Korn Ferry Tour, 30 under par. Shot 58 that first round.

00:32:37:03

PHIL BLACKMAR: Head back over to the 17th now. Brandon Wu. [club swing]

00:32:52:09

PHIL BLACKMAR: Best shot we have seen here at the 17th.

00:32:56:26

STEVE SANDS: Now up on the green, speaking of eagles, how about number 20? Tommy Gaines. Two-Gloves.

00:33:01:22

CRAIG PERKS: Don't let us down, Tommy. Straight down the hill. No movement.

00:33:05:21

STEVE SANDS: Is it enough?

00:33:06:00

CRAIG PERKS: Good on you.

00:33:06:20

STEVE SANDS: Yes, it is. How about that.

00:33:08:15

CRAIG PERKS: Stiff it up and down.

00:33:08:25

STEVE SANDS: Tommy Gaines.

00:33:10:20

CRAIG PERKS: 62 to lead the first day. 70 yesterday. And that gets him to 3 under today. 13 under.

00:33:17:22

STEVE SANDS: Now Stephan Jaeger is standing an eagle putt here at 16, Gary.

00:33:23:09

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. A wonderful opportunity. A little soft right-to-left break up. [putter clicks]

00:33:28:03

CRAIG PERKS: It would be his third eagle of the week. Stay up. But 21st birdie to go along with those two eagles.

00:33:40:00

STEVE SANDS: And that will be good enough.

00:33:41:21

CRAIG PERKS: He takes the lead. Yeah.

00:33:43:04

STEVE SANDS: All by himself.

00:33:43:28

CRAIG PERKS: Hmm. [cup rattles]

00:33:44:20

STEVE SANDS: 19 under par is the number right now. And now, the last ten years, the average winning score here on this golf course in this tournament, 21 under par. I think that average might creep up a little bit more tomorrow.

00:33:57:22

STEVE SANDS: Now, this, Gary, for a bogey-free, 7-under-par 64 and a two-shot lead.

00:34:05:24

GARY CHRISTIAN: It's been a clinical performance up to this point. He was a very interested spectator over that last putt.

00:34:17:03

CRAIG PERKS: Hmm. First one he's sort of peeked. And was wistful with the stroke. And he knows it. You can hear the reaction. Great opportunity, that was, to get to 20 under. He's got a 2-shot lead beginning tomorrow. [cup rattles] [clapping]

00:34:47:07

GOLFER: Yeah. Good playing.

00:34:49:28

STEVE SANDS: Well, he doesn't convert after that beautiful approach at the 18th. But his second 65 sandwiched with a 64 in between. Stephen Jaeger is in the pole position with 18 holes remaining here at the Albertsons Boise Open.

00:35:07:01

STEVE SANDS: 19 under par is where the lead sits. And he'll play alongside Cameron Young. And we address those three Korn Ferry Tour starts going after victory number one on Sunday.

00:35:19:23

STEVE SANDS: Brandon Wu, right there after a 63, 8 under par. Closed so well coming down the stretch, where you have to make your birdies and perhaps an eagle at 16, or else you'll get lapped. [music]

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:35:45:03

STEVE SANDS: If you're looking for drama and excitement mixed with high-level pressure, you have it at the Albertsons Boise Open. The weather, once again, ideal, which means we can expect another Sunday shootout for this coveted Korn Ferry title. Steve Sands pleased to be alongside Craig Perks once again.

00:36:00:06

STEVE SANDS: And Craig, we've already seen some action early in this Final Round. Let's begin with an eagle try at the 2nd for Cameron Young.

00:36:08:05

CRAIG PERKS: Got to take advantage of these back-to-back par 5s. That's Cameron's fourth eagle of the week. Flying start for the 23-year-old.

00:36:14:27

STEVE SANDS: Got him to 21 under par. But he bogeyed 3 to drop back to 20. Stephan Jaeger, an eagle at 2. That got him to 21 under par and the lead all by himself.

00:36:24:25

STEVE SANDS: How about Brandon Wu? This birdie try at 7.

00:36:28:18

CRAIG PERKS: Such a huge week for the 23-year-old. Came here 145th on the Points List. Trying to continue his season. 3 under on the round. Gets him to 20 under.

00:36:37:29

STEVE SANDS: Just one shot back of the lead at the time. Dan McCarthy with a birdie putt at the 12th.

00:36:43:15

CRAIG PERKS: Very quick, straight down the hill for the 35-year-old. Had won on this Tour in 2019. Looks to do it again in 2020.

00:36:54:12

STEVE SANDS: You better be into the 20s if you are even thinking about winning this Albertsons Boise Open. Right now, the lead is at 21 under par. But you can expect more of the same of what we've seen so far. You have got to go low.

00:37:10:04

STEVE SANDS: At the 14th with Brandon Wu. Bogeyed two of his last three holes. This would really go a long way to steadying the nerves.

00:37:17:03

CRAIG PERKS: And also, knowing 15, 16, you make it--you make this one, gives you some momentum getting to that drivable par 4, getting to the easiest par 5 on the golf course. So potentially, you could have a dramatic change in the Leaderboard right here. It has to start with this birdie putt.

00:37:34:27

STEVE SANDS: Yeah. This is a part of the golf course that we've seen a lot of birdie/birdie/eagle. [cup rattles]

00:37:40:10

CRAIG PERKS: And--

00:37:39:26

STEVE SANDS: And that's a good start.

00:37:40:26

CRAIG PERKS: There you go. Good bounce-back birdie to the bogey you mentioned on the previous hole.

00:37:48:09

STEVE SANDS: Now Young. Not the easiest of places to pitch from here, Gary. Huh?

00:37:54:19

GARY CHRISTIAN: No. Especially with this lie. The grass is growing into him. And it's--it's one of those lies that looks a little firm underneath, as well, where it's almost like the grass is smeared on top rather than kind of sitting up. So he's got to try and carry it over that fringe and then just let it run down from there. But trying to get good contact from this lie is gonna be very, very difficult, indeed.

00:38:18:10

GARY CHRISTIAN: And this is on if you don't get right, you can easily run this over--off the front edge of the green.

00:38:28:28

CRAIG PERKS: Suffer through the adversities you--you learn so much more. I think strength rejoices in the challenge.

00:38:54:27

STEVE SANDS: Jaeger now, Gary.

00:38:59:20

GARY CHRISTIAN: A pretty flat putt.

00:39:01:05

CRAIG PERKS: He's got it on line. Oh. Finally.

00:39:04:01

STEVE SANDS: Oh, wow.

00:39:04:10

CRAIG PERKS: He finally found his range. 22 under par.

00:39:09:05

STEVE SANDS: Yeah. So while Young is sputtering here at 14, Jaeger drops a long one. And he's the first man to get to 22 under par. And now has a two-shot lead.

00:39:19:12

CRAIG PERKS: We've seen this look on Stephan's face for the--this weekend. And I'm reminded of a quote from Joe Torre, "Be intense without being tense." And that's what we see.

00:39:35:05

STEVE SANDS: Cameron makes bogey at 14.

00:39:48:19

STEVE SANDS: Now the eagle try up at 16 for Chiarella.

00:39:53:22

CRAIG PERKS: Swing this down and to the right late. Huge putt for the 26-year-old. All right. Good birdie.

00:40:04:15

STEVE SANDS: Now Jaeger's birdie putt at 16. [cup rattles] Yeah. [clapping] Drips in over the front edge. And that perhaps shuts the door on the record. And I think he knows it there with that wry smile.

00:40:18:05

CRAIG PERKS: He's been clinical. Really has not made any mistakes. His last--his last bogey came on the 8th hole in the Second Round. Didn't drive it in the best position. Got a fortunate break with his second. Finished, and then just drip it in the edge.

00:40:39:00

CRAIG PERKS: Guys trying to win golf tournament for the first time need to go watch this. This is--this is brilliant.

00:40:47:11

CRAIG PERKS: Justin Lower doing his job today. That's--to shoot 66, birdied three of his last four holes. And get him into a tie for 4th.

00:40:58:10

STEVE SANDS: You're not gonna see a lot of 3s--

00:40:59:06

CRAIG PERKS: Nope.

00:40:59:19

STEVE SANDS: --at 18.

00:41:01:26

CRAIG PERKS: This is the third-toughest hole. This would be just the 10th birdie today. [cup rattles]

00:41:14:25

STEVE SANDS: This was really well-played.

00:41:15:23

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. Came in this week 26th. So he'll be zooming up the Points List. 19 under.

00:41:21:11

STEVE SANDS: How about that weekend?

00:41:23:23

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. 129. That's very good. You're right.

00:41:26:08

STEVE SANDS: So good.

00:41:28:12

CRAIG PERKS: Lucky to make the cut.

00:41:30:25

PHIL BLACKMAR: 17 tee quickly. Jaeger.

00:41:35:01

GARY CHRISTIAN: Just gotta take the long out of play here. [club swing] I would expect this to be a little short of the flag.

00:41:45:16

PHIL BLACKMAR: Oh, a little bit of an error there, going through this green. Uh, unnecessary work. You can see it. It's sitting down just a little bit. That will be problematic trying to get good contact on that.

00:41:58:05

CRAIG PERKS: Remember, he bellied that wedge at the 9th. So maybe he could hit that shot there.

00:42:03:10

PHIL BLACKMAR: This would be a good lie for it. Or maybe a hybrid, as well.

00:42:05:06

CRAIG PERKS: Yep.

00:42:07:14

PHIL BLACKMAR: Now Young.

00:42:20:04

GARY CHRISTIAN: Good solid thump with a wedge there. It looked like a better swing.

00:42:25:25

PHIL BLACKMAR: He's got a birdie putt. Currently tied for 10th. Would love to get another birdie here coming in, go up that Leaderboard a little bit, get valuable points.

00:42:39:06

STEVE SANDS: 18th tee, iron in hand for Brandon Wu.

00:42:41:21

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. Just get it in the fairway so you can control [club swing] your distance up the hill.

00:42:58:25

PHIL BLACKMAR: Back to the 17th. Stephan Jaeger, our Leader, has gone through the green. He's got a three-shot lead. But not the best of lies, it doesn't look like, Gary.

00:43:07:22

GARY CHRISTIAN: Well, just nestled enough to be slightly problematic, I would say. It's not easy with a three-lead. It's one you've just got to--if he plays a normal chip, you've just got to dab it just onto the green, let it release down there. Or if you belly it--it looks like he's taking a very shallow putting-type stroke.

00:43:27:16

PHIL BLACKMAR: And if you belly it, looking at the lie. We got a good look, Gary. It will likely jump out of that hole and onto the fringe with some overspin. And it's actually not a hard shot to judge if you've practiced it a little bit.

00:43:43:16

PHIL BLACKMAR: The main thing is you've got to be precise at--the edge of the club, the leading edge of the club, needs to hit right around the equator of the ball.

00:43:52:26

PHIL BLACKMAR: That's a little bit more of a chipping move. Maybe he's gonna chip it.

00:43:57:08

CRAIG PERKS: I like it back in his stance, hands forward, chop down on it.

00:44:02:05

PHIL BLACKMAR: That was the chip. Might have should have be--bellied it. Hm.

00:44:10:24

PHIL BLACKMAR: You never know. If he misses that, Brandon Wu birdies the last, never know.

00:44:21:14

PHIL BLACKMAR: It's been quite a turnaround this season for Stephen Jaeger. The first five events of this year in the Final Round he averaged 76, over 76. Since returning after the COVID-19 break, he's taken 10 strokes off of that. That's a remarkable turnaround. And he had demonstrated that same trend today, the way he's played today. It's incredible.

00:44:48:11

STEVE SANDS: And there it is. Brandon Wu in prime position if he can get that ball back there, Craig.

00:44:54:01

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah.

00:44:54:25

STEVE SANDS: Give himself a chance.

00:44:55:11

CRAIG PERKS: You have to take it on. It's so difficult coming over the edge of that bunker. You can barely see the top of the flagstick. It's probably a five-yard area you can land--you have to land this in to get it close. [club swing]

00:45:16:10

CRAIG PERKS: Oh, left it out to the right. Yeah. Well, he's there. Putt coming up the slope. With Dan McCarthy in the same spot, leave it short. The speed tough to judge.

00:45:32:13

PHIL BLACKMAR: 17, Cameron Young a much-needed birdie if he can knock this one in.

00:45:37:09

GARY CHRISTIAN: Every putt crucial for points. A good-looking putt. There you go. [cup rattles]

00:45:41:11

PHIL BLACKMAR: Oh, yeah. [clapping] It's been a long time coming, that birdie. He hasn't played a hole under par since the eagle at the 2nd. [chuckle] Good to see a smile.

00:45:58:10

STEVE SANDS: And Wu now trying to clean this up. A 20-under-par week.

00:46:14:10

CRAIG PERKS: Yet again, at 145, a huge jump up that Points List will get him not only in Columbus, get him in--hopefully to a Championship at Victoria National. And remember the reimagined wrap-around. There's five more events after the conclusion of the Tour Championship. Opportunities abundant for Brandon.

00:46:32:28

GOLFER: Right at it?

00:46:32:28

MALE: Yep.

00:46:34:15

GOLFER: Might as well [indistinct].

00:46:36:01

MALE: Yeah. That's what I'm thinking.

00:46:37:23

STEVE SANDS: That sounds like a good plan, Gary.

00:46:40:16

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. That works most holes, doesn't it? Yeah, it's at 120, just coming off this rough. This want it to come over the corner of this bunker, corner of the slope. Not an easy angle to come in from. [club swing]

00:47:10:28

GARY CHRISTIAN: Well, he's made it look pretty easy. What a shot to stop it that quick. [clapping]

00:47:14:01

CRAIG PERKS: Incredible.

00:47:15:13

STEVE SANDS: Well, he said he might as well hit it to a foot.

00:47:16:17

CRAIG PERKS: And he did.

00:47:17:18

STEVE SANDS: It looks like he hit it to about three feet. That's amazing.

00:47:19:06

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah.

00:47:19:29

STEVE SANDS: What a shot. Now the leader by 2. [club swing]

00:47:26:05

GARY CHRISTIAN: From 90 yards.

00:47:28:11

CRAIG PERKS: Took a lot of speed off that. Just skip it up the slope. Was never gonna go long. Prudent play there from our Leader.

00:47:38:09

STEVE SANDS: Good safe play by Stephan Jaeger, who grew up in Munich, Germany playing soccer and tennis. But he moved to the United States in high school. His family stayed back in Germany. He still speaks fluent in both languages. He chose golf. And it looks like he chose wisely. He is a heck of a player. And he is just steps away from winning for the fifth time on the Korn Ferry Tour. And he looks awfully relaxed out there, Craig.

00:48:07:16

CRAIG PERKS: Oh. Gratified, fulfilled. And he came into this week on poor forms and leave a Champion. [music]

00:48:17:04

STEVE SANDS: Come on back with us and see what Stephan Jaeger does here at the 18th green as he tries to wrap up this Albertsons Boise Open.

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:48:28:02

STEVE SANDS: Well, Gary, we talked about all the experience. You were out there all day long. This is going to be the fifth victory for Stephan Jaeger on the Korn Ferry Tour. He did it three consecutive years in 2016, '17, and '18 before going to the PGA Tour. And now coming back here and winning again in 2020. He is doing this on a regular basis, Gary.

00:48:50:27

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. And you wonder how much better prepared he'll feel next time he's back on the PGA Tour. You know, sometimes you've got to fail a couple of times. Learn what it is you need to get better at. Consistency has been one of those things. And he said he's made an effort to be more consistent this year. It will be interesting to see what he does the rest of this combined season, to see if he's fully prepared for the PGA Tour if he does graduate.

00:49:14:07

GARY CHRISTIAN: Uphill, just moving a little left from here.

00:49:18:26

CRAIG PERKS: Just ease it up there nice and close. Try to make it a stress-free victory.

00:49:27:29

STEVE SANDS: Something like that. [clapping]

00:49:28:29

CRAIG PERKS: It's amazing, really. You'd think the bogey on the previous hole, that was his first bogey in 45 holes. What does he do? Stand up there, pummel drive a wedge, played the hole brilliantly. A deserving Champion.

00:49:58:21

STEVE SANDS: Just never got rattled.

00:50:00:11

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. Came in here in poor form and leaves a Champion. It's quite amazing.

00:50:08:03

CRAIG PERKS: Well, this will be a flurry at the finish, Gary, for Cameron Young.

00:50:12:23

GARY CHRISTIAN: Yeah. Wouldn't it just? It would be a huge point differential from the last two holes.

00:50:24:18

CRAIG PERKS: Well, birdied the last two to get now in a tie for 6th. [clapping] He made five bogeys today. He had made four bogeys in the first 54 holes. But give him credit for fighting back with those closing two birdies. [cup rattles]

00:50:36:02

STEVE SANDS: And the Champion. [clapping] Stephan Jaeger wins the Albertsons Boise Open in impressive fashion at 22 under par.

00:50:51:25

STEVE SANDS: Not sure what to expect coming into the week, Stephan sure played well these four days.

00:50:59:27

STEVE SANDS: Now we have the updated Points List. And look what happens to Jaeger, as he goes all the way to 12th.

00:51:05:22

CRAIG PERKS: Yeah. Began the week 74th. That is a huge jump. [music]

00:51:13:08

STEVE SANDS: Craig, that was a strong performance from Stephan.

00:51:15:04

CRAIG PERKS: Well, the experience of winning four times is great. But it takes a back seat to execution. And he kept everyone at arms' length. Impressive performance this week for Stephan Jaeger. [music]
