Mrs. Conover-Pannone aka: Mrs. Pannone

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Advanced Placement Biology (AP Biology) is a rigorous college-level course that prepares students for the Advanced Placement Biology Exam in May. This course aims to have students accomplish the following objectives: i) expand knowledge in areas of molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, and organisms and populations; ii) gain the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to think critically about and to question trends in biology; iii) understand the process of collecting and analyzing scientific data and extrapolate that data to make further hypotheses.

EXPECTATIONS:

You are about to embark on an adventure that is not only interesting and rewarding, but is also quite rigorous and challenging. You will delve into the heart of biology, exploring cells and plants; learning about behavior and genetics. Careers will be addressed in the field; many diverse projects will be completed; students will serve as both the teacher and learner in a lecture/discussion format which will require the best of each of you. By the end of the course, you will have grown intellectually and socially, with a strong appreciation for biology.

It is important that you know what the AP Biology course entails. It WILL BE rigorous and demanding; requiring a SIGNIFICANT portion of your time. You must become skilled in time management; you must become an innovative and independent thinker, having strong writing skills, a solid grasp of biology and most of all, an enjoyment for science. Are you a critical thinker? If the answer is yes, then you are in for quite an adventure! If the answer is no, you’ll discover your ability to learn this valuable skill as we explore the wonderful world of biology!!!! This quest for knowledge won’t be easy, it will be challenging. This class is intended for students who are mature and willing to work hard, beyond their expectation. Upon completion of the course, the expectation is that you will take the AP Biology exam. This exam affords all students the opportunity to earn college credit for one year of Biology (Biology 101 and Biology 102). If you do your best and study hard, you can earn up to eight college credits. This translates into thousands of dollars in savings.

You will be required to read nightly.  You will outline the major concepts of the chapters, and read for understanding.  It is extremely important is to ask questions about any concept(s) you feel you are not clear on. I will also assign homework. I do want to emphasize that I am going to be a stickler for due dates. If you have a valid excuse, email me as soon as possible (prior to missing the due date) I will consider your excuse.

Hybrid Expectations:

• Daily Schedule---Classes will be live streamed via Google Meets. Students need to attend (login) class each day at their designated times*.  Virtual students must sign in via google meets and will not leave until dismissed. During a presentation if you have a question, unmute yourself and ask. I will stop and address your question. I am hoping this will all be as seamless as it sounds.  Good news is that it can only get better! (think positive!)

• I will post assignments, perhaps not daily – we will all be in class either IRL or virtual. All assignments will have a due date and be posted in Google classroom.  I also have a website for each course that I teach where you can find the materials by either unit (chapters) or by just by chapter.  pannoneapbio.

• I am hoping that our class will be entirely paperless!  All work will be posted on Google classroom and submitted there as well.

• In class, come in, be seated, and take out your chrome book.  Phones in the classroom will either be face down on your desk or in your bag (not pocket).

• Masks will make it difficult for me to hear you also see who is speaking, so you will raise your hand and wait to be called on to speak. You will also need to be quiet when someone is speaking.

• If you need to use the restroom. Raise your hand and point to the door, you can leave at my nod.  Only one person out at a time (unless it is an emergency of course - just go, I will know).

TEAM WORK:

I view this course as a team effort. While each person needs to complete and hand in their own work, study groups and cooperative effort are strongly encouraged. You never learn something as well, as when you have to explain it to someone else.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are expected to be on time to class every day (both synchronous and asynchronous). Students are responsible for class work, homework, exams and lab work when they are absent. Work should be made up in a timely manner, refer to the student handbook for guidelines for absences and makeup work. Make-up exams will be different from the exam given on the test day but cover the same material.

MATERIALS:

a. Chromebook (supplied by the district) – charged every night and carried to class always.

b. loose-leaf paper and graph paper. (you will not need much just small amount)

c. Pen and a pencil (because)

d. blue or black pen and pencil to be brought to class EVERY day

e. calculator (scientific or graphing)

f. textbook: Biology, 7th AP edition by Campbell and Reece

WEB SITE:

I maintain a class website, pannoneapbio.. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the website. I will post valuable information: homework assignments, printable power point pdfs, tentative exam dates, extra credit and lab report due dates. There also will be links for each major topic we cover.

NOTEBOOK

This year my class will be as paperless as possible – have your Chromebook every day. All work will be submitted through Google classroom and shared with me via Google Drive. Keep a Folder titled AP BIO in drive, and have subfolders by unit and chapter. You will be able to incorporate handouts, your RSO’s (Read-Study-Outline) and class notes. Your RSO’s will become part of your notes. Incorporate into your notebook the handouts, RSO homework, class work, essays etc.

LABS – At the moment all labs will be demonstrations or virtual.

HOMEWORK:

Textbook Reading is essential. (RSO = read, study, outline). You will be required to RSO prior to covering the material in class. Very Important! Read the book nightly, stay up-to-date to be prepared. RSO’s will not be collected regularly, but spot-checked. Sorry, but if you are not doing well on exams, or have no idea what is going on I may ask to see your RSO. You have been warned I do not do this to embarrass you – so be prepared. I want everyone to succeed (100% AP Scores of 5).

Homework will be posted on the board and on the website. All written assignments (except RSO’s) will be collected, checked and returned. Keep both assignments and RSO’s in your binder. All assignments will be collected and graded. If you are absent, see the student handbook for make up work policy.

AP essays are an integral part of the AP exam. Essays will be a regular component of each exam to help prepare you for the AP exam. Essay assignments will be worth 10-25% of each exam grade. Essays will be graded and returned. Keep them in your notebook.

EXAMS

WARNING! My tests are very difficult and require you to know the material, dissect the question, and apply your knowledge. My purpose is to prepare you to make a 5 on the AP exam.  Exams are composed of AP type exam questions and AP style essays. Exam questions are based on material covered in class as well as related topics.

GRADING

Grades will be calculated on a percentage basis.

Exams, Projects, Labs and Quizzes 70%

Homework and class work 30%

I am looking forward to meeting you all and working together this year! I have office hours between 12:30 – 2:00 (I will narrow this down later in the week. Although I am always available if you need me, via Google hangouts or email. If you need help or have questions regarding the material, please see me, message me or email me immediately.
