Student Name Welcome to AP/IB ChemistryInstructor: Cyndi Stumpcstump@903 720-0242Virtual Office Hours Virtual – Wednesdays from 3:00 – 3:45After School by AppointmentTextbook: Edvantage Science Chemistry 1 & 2 Course Objective: To prepare students for future college and career by developing good study habits and learning the content of introduction to college chemistry. COVID Safety Expectations: The following expectations are to keep the health and safety of students and staff as a priority. Students are required to wear a mask at all times unless eating a permitted meal. If a student is eating a meal, the student must remain at one desk and maintain 6-foot distance from others. If the meal is breakfast, the student must eat quickly to not disrupt his/her or other’s learning. Only water bottles and drinks provided by nutritional services is permitted. Students are expected to bring their laptop to every class. Textbooks can remain at home. Students will be given an assigned seat and are expected to go straight to their seat upon entering the classroom. Course Requirements: Students will develop and maintain an interactive notebook read and take notes from textbooks and lectures, complete all homework, work as individuals but share data to investigate labs, work independently to write up the results of the labs, study for and hopefully pass quizzes and unit tests. All students are expected to design, investigate and present a science fair project. This project will eventually develop into an internal experimental assessment. IB Chemistry Specifics: Students in the 11th grade are expected to attend the IB Group 4 Retreat, as well as design, implement, and present an inquirer based group investigation. Course Expectations:Principled: Students are encouraged to work together, but not to copy. If you don’t know the difference, then do your work independently. Any student caught cheating will be given a zero for that assignment and have a parent contact. Late papers will be accepted with a maximum of 50% graded awarded. No late papers will be accepted after the unit test is given.Inquirers and Communicators: Students are expected to use safe lab procedures to investigate answers to chemistry problems and to communicate the results in a formal lab write up. Thinkers and Risk Takers: Students will be expected to attempt difficult assignments and be comfortable with trial and error efforts, not giving up, but being persistent and patient in the face of rigorous content.Knowledgeable and Thinkers: Students will be expected to read, take notes and complete homework to obtain a basic knowledge of the content on their own. Coming to class prepared to ask questions.Open Minded and Caring: Students will work collaboratively in and outside of class to further their knowledge of chemistry, and through this process, become more accepting of the diverse population of our community. Students will demonstrate caring for others by contributing to the learning process of others and NOT disrupting the learning process. Students will show care for their own learning process by NOT having cell phones out during class unless given permission by the teacher.Reflective and Balanced: Students will continually evaluate study habits and learn to modify and improve said habits. Students will also demonstrate good time management as they juggle school, family and extracurricular activities.Textbook Information: Textbooks cost $21/each and there is two of them. Student does NOT have to pay the full amount. Student may opt to pay for the textbooks through the course of the munication: Schoology, Infinite Campus and Google Classroom will all be used to insure the student has many resources for success. Schoology will always be the starting platform. Links will be on Schoology for the online portion of the class. At times Google Classroom will be utilized, but the link will be posted on Schoology. Both students and parents are encouraged to check infinite campus daily to see grades, missing assignments and attendance. Students and Parents are also encouraged to join the Chemistry class remind message system.Grade Percentages:Homework – 10%Notebooks/Labs/Science Fair Project -25%Quizzes/Tests - 50%Semester Exam and IA - 15%Discipline: It is my goal to never embarrass or humiliate a student. I respect and encourage my students to positive behavior, unfortunately, sometimes it becomes necessary to have negative consequences. These consequences can include teacher/student conference, teacher/student/parent conference, student/parent phone call, office referral, ISS and/or OSS. Cell phones can and will be confiscated and given back at the end of class, unless a student argues, and/or is a repeat offender, then a conference with the student and his/her parent/guardian will be scheduled and the phone returned to the parent/guardian.Curriculum: Fall Semester 2019There will be four unit tests during the semester and a final exam.UnitTitleTest on or before 1Atomic Structure, Properties and PeriodicityNov. 52Bonding, Molecular/Ionic/Metallic Structures and PropertiesDec 43Chemical Reactions, Acids, Bases and StroichiometryDec 18AP Chemistry Exam InformationThe AP Chemistry Exam assesses student understanding of the science practices and learning objectives outlined in the course framework. The exam is 3 hours and 15 minutes long and includes 60 multiple-choice questions and 7 free-response questions. A scientific or graphing calculator is recommended for use on Section II of the exam. No calculators are permitted for use on Section I. Students are provided with the periodic table and a formula sheet that lists specific and relevant formulas for use on the exam.IB Chemistry Exam InformationThe IB uses both external and internal assessment in the DP.External assessmentExaminations form the basis of the assessment for Chemistry SL. This is because of their high levels of objectivity and reliability. They include:essaysstructured problemsshort-response questionsdata-response questionsmultiple choice questionsInternal assessmentTeacher assessment is also used for Chemistry SL. This includes:group 4 IA ExperimentExternally assessed coursework, completed by students over an extended period under authenticated teacher supervision is required. In Chemistry SL, students also complete in-school assessment experiment. These are either externally assessed or marked by teachers and then moderated by the IB.In the DP, students receive grades ranging from 7 to 1, with 7 being highest. Students receive a grade for each DP course attempted.Remind SystemText the message @smarty2020 to the number 81010.
