My Home Reading Log Name_________________________DayTime Spent Reading Parent SignatureMondayTuesday Wednesday Thursday FridaySaturdaySundayDear Parents,Please ensure that your children read for 10-15 min each day Monday through Friday. Children are also encouraged to read on weekends or to have a parent, sibling or friend read to them. Time spent reading to your child may also be included in the log as long as your student read for the required 10-15 min Monday through Friday. Thanks,Kim Spatz.Dear Parents,Welcome back! I trust you had a warm, blessed Christmas and enjoyed many New Year celebrations. Thank you everyone for all your generous gifts and thoughtful notes and cards. Wow! Were we (Father, Mr. Galati and myself) surprised by your extraordinarily generous gifts of capiz-shell Filipino Christmas lanterns. Mine holds place of honor in our home this Christmas season. I am blessed! Your children all did a fabulous job singing, dancing, and speaking at the Christmas program. Thank you again Mrs. Honrado for helping the children with their pronunciation of the Filipino language, Tagalog…And to Mr. Mullen and Mrs. Honrado for helping the children make their own musical instruments. They were wonderful! This week we arrive back at school just in time to celebrate Epiphany (Feast of the Three Wise Men). We’ll read about the story of the Three Wise Men and draw a star of Bethlehem. Also in religion this week we’ll learn about John the Baptist and Jesus’ baptism. Julian is our star this week and next week our star will be Allie. In math we continue learning about place value and our base ten numeration system (grouping numbers into tens) We begin learning the standard algorithm for double-digit addition in which we write the numbers vertically and add the ones first and then the tens. In spelling this week we will be again be studying the 2 different sounds that ‘y’ can make…the long ‘i’ sound at the end of short words like my, and the long ‘e’ sound at the end of multi-syllabic words like happy. If your child studied these words before Christmas he/she will be ahead of the game this week! Children will also learn that in words like day and say the ‘y’ acts as a vowel and makes to ‘a’ say its long sound, following the rule, “When 2 vowels go a walking, the first was does the talking and it makes its long sound.” In the Challenge Spelling children will review words in which the ‘y’ the short ‘i’ sound, as in crystal. Please note that this trimester the children will be expected to write two sentences each night for spelling. In science this term we will study plants. Students will learn about the life cycle of a plant, the parts of a flower, pollination, traits of plants, and the environments where they live. This week we’ll learn how seeds are dispersed. And we’ll continue to observe our mealworms. In social studies this term we will study maps. Students will use basic information on maps to locate and identify physical and human features of our community. They will identify the relative location of Holy Family School in the local community, the state and nation and the world. They will describe human and physical characteristics of the community. We will also be making our own pirate maps!In music we’ll get back to learning musical notation. We’ll clap rhythms as we learn to read half notes, whole notes, quarter notes, and rests. We’ll also do some fun dancing and games with K-1. Please note: Second graders go to library on Wednesdays. Please return borrowed books to school every Wednesday. Thank you!
