An art teacher at the Fayerweather Street School in Cambridge, Iku was born in Tokyo, Japan in the year of the Monkey under the constellation of Virgo.? She enjoys spending time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and loves Mexican culture.? She would enjoy living part time in a small Mexican town like San Miguel de Allende, where she often goes to paint.? Iku was chosen an artist of the year by the Cambridge Art Association in 2019.??About 9 years ago Iku decided she just wanted to paint, pure and simple! Since then, painting has become her solo medium ( now strictly in acrylic ). She rediscovered the joy and challenges of making an exciting, interesting,?emotionally engaging painting. She says, "It is hard to be simply a painter in this day and age without being “unconventional;” whatever that means."? A full statement?from the artist is available in the Narthex and at the Welcome Table in social hour.? You can also visit her website ikuoseki.. Iku will be with us to share more about her paintings on March 8.?? In March, the Shared Offering recipient was chosen by the children and youth in our Religious Education program who choose an organization to support as their Justice Partner through learning, action, and fundraising each year.?The Justice Partner 2020 winner was?Fridays for Future?by a landslide!?Greta Thunberg’s climate justice organization was the top choice in every age group, inspired by her fearless speeches, her clear scientific logic, and her inspirational commitment not to fly.? Youth today face high incidences of climate anxiety, but Greta is a powerful role model of what youth can do in the face of adult inaction and how they can speak out, take action, and participate in a movement for change. Our children are working at different age levels to educate themselves and others about our climate emergency; supporting Friday school strikes; visiting legislators, and more. Look for more from us this spring as we share our learning with you adults! This year, however, we want to cultivate a deep sense of how we are all invested in First Parish in Cambridge.? Our overall financial health is a responsibility that each of us carries, no matter the quantity of what we are able to give. First Parish belongs to all of us and we work together, congregation, staff, community leaders, visitors and friends to make this place what it is.? Healthy and responsible stewardship of our resources is an essential part of how we do this.? In this spirit we are launching our Annual Fund Drive:?INVESTED...honoring our past, enabling our work today, empowering future generations.?We have an ambitious goal of raising $300,000 to support First Parish programs, facilities and staff, but a healthy, well-managed budget contributes to so much more.? First Parish is one of the most important historical institutions in Unitarian Universalism, not to mention Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts and the United States.? We hold all of this important history, both good and bad.? First Parish is where we come to live our values through connection to social justice and building an anti-racist, multicultural world beginning with our own community.? First Parish is also the place where we invite others to learn and grow through community events, by supporting internships and work study opportunities as well as by providing meals and shelter.? Most importantly however, First Parish in Cambridge is the place where we cultivate the emotional, spiritual and community nourishment that will allow us all to be sustained, inspired and celebrated in our wholeness.?We look forward to helping each and everyone in our community explore how we are all INVESTED in First Parish in Cambridge throughout the month of March.?Call for Governing Board NominationsThrough service on the Governing Board, members can make a gift of their own skills and experience, broaden their understanding of our congregation, and deepen their commitment to our mission. Get Involved!Hospitality Help Needed It takes many volunteers for us to be able to provide food for social hour on Sundays after worship. It’s too much to expect that a few people will do all the work on this so we’re asking that everyone pitch in to make our social hours welcoming to all. We’re looking for 3-4 people each week to provide food items (baked goods, fruit, cheese & crackers, hummus, etc.). We also need 1-2 people to help set up and clean up. The church provides coffee, tea and water. A sign-up sheet is available in the Parlor for you to volunteer!Accompaniment and Child Care Volunteering First Parish is a member of the CISC, a coalition of Cambridge-area congregations currently hosting a woman and her two children in sanctuary so she can avoid deportation and separation from her family. “Accompaniment” volunteers are needed seven days a week on-site at a church in Harvard Square. We can pair you with an experienced volunteer so you won’t be on your own. We are also looking for volunteers who can commit to regular monthly outings to ensure that the children are able to spend time outside each day. A simple hour or two of outdoor play means so much in the life of this family. Because coverage and consistency are ongoing concerns, we are looking for people who can commit to at least 2 weekday morning or afternoon outings a month. Please email BBSF@ to learn more about either of these opportunities.Events This WeekPlease note that Yoga, Music and Art Classes are not First Parish programs. They are run by outside instructors and a fee may be associated.
