Welcome Back!

Our school theme this year is Take Flight. The Rocket Rapper will feature interesting facts about flight.

We will be publishing a newspaper each month. We welcome submissions from all students. All articles are due by the 15th of each month.

If you have a fantastic poem or short story that you would like to see published, submit it for consideration. We also take seasonal artwork, based on the space available in each issue.

Remember that you are submitting work for the following month, not the current month. So it is too late for September articles, but you can write an October article and turn it in until October 15.

Linvilla Orchards

Linvilla orchards is a fun local place to enjoy. Pumpkinland is open now through November 9th. There are many activities in Pumpkinland. There are large scarecrows, thousands of pumpkins, and kids having a blast.  Some activities to enjoy are hayrides, face painting, corn mazes, and picking your own apples.  You can take the hayride to the witches house. She tells stories and all the kids go home with a treat.  Stay for a bonfire, roast marshmallows, and have some apple cider. At night, October 17th-30th there will be a Jack-O-Lantern exhibit to light up your night. On October 26th at 3pm there is an Annual Costume Parade where everyone gets a prize. Inside the Farm Market, you’ll find delicious pies, cookies, apple cider donuts, and home-made candies galore. You will also find freshly picked fruits and vegetables. There are fun things to do during all of the holidays. So if your looking for something fun to do, go to Linvilla Orchards!

Speaking of Peace...

The year started with an assembly about Peace Builders. We learned that school is a safe place because we have rules. We talked about the Golden Tray program, and the Aston School Pledge.

Remember:

Be safe,

be respectful,

and be responsible!

Check out the Peace Builders’

webpage when you get the chance. There are movie reviews, blogs, and more.

Making Friends:

by Danielle Marvelli

One day there was a little girl named Ashley, who was new to her school. She didn’t know anyone. So at recess, she walked around the playground, sad and lonely. A girl named Emily came up to her to see if she wanted to play, and yes, Ashley did. They spent a lot of time together after that. They sat together at lunch, became math and science partners and did other fun things. Other kids also joined in too and began playing with them. The best part for Ashley coming to a new school was that Ashley and Emily became best friends forever!

Brain Teasers

1 There are 20 people in an empty square room. Each person has full sight of the entire room and everyone in it without turning a head or body part other than the eyes. Where can you place an apple where all but one person can see it?

Place the apple on the persons head!

2 A boy was at a carnival and went to a booth where a man said, “If I can write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50. If I can’t, I will give you $50. The boy looked for a scale and didn’t see one, so he said yes. In the end, the boy had to give him $50. How did the man win the bet?

The man wrote “your exact weight” on the paper!

From Riddles & Brain Teasers

Teachers and Students:

We are on the lookout for some really great writing. If you have a great story or poem that you think other students might like to read, send it to the office. The deadline for submission is the 15th of each month.

Sincerely,

Rocket Staff

As a new student at Aston Elementary School its been fun,

exciting and a bit scary. The fun part is riding a school bus. I like

having my friends from the street on the bus. At my old school I

walked, because I lived close by the school, so riding a bus is fun!

The exciting part is meeting all my new teachers, making new

friends and learning new skills. All my new teachers are very nice.

They made me feel welcomed. Making new friends is really fun. My

friend Lauren who lives next door to me and Jake who lives across the

street are in my class. I feel lucky to have them with me. Meeting all

my new classmates was great. They all made me feel very welcomed. I

like being a part of my fifth grade class. Learning new skills is

always challenging. SME and Reading Counts is a new skill for me. I am

giving it my best effort.

The scary part is getting used to a new school building. When you

don't know where all the classrooms are, you feel lost and sometimes

frustrated. I like it when people in the building help me find my way

around. I am getting used to this large school. I really do like it.

All the new things that were done to the school to make this place

really special.

I am happy to be a part of Aston Elementary. Everyone is kind and

helpful. Thank you for welcoming me.

Remember to always get an adult to help before you start any science experiment!

Student of the Month

We have a Word of the Month program at Aston Elementary. The word of the month for September is responsibility. Each teacher names a Student of the Month. If you are chosen as Student of the Month in your room, you will get to have breakfast with the principal. Your parents get to come to breakfast with you. You also get a certificate and get your picture taken with Mr. Bender and the other students of the month. Teachers will be looking for students who show that they are responsible.

You can show that you are responsible by turning in your work, leaving things nicer than when you found them, taking care of school property like the recess bags, desks, and books. Another way that could help you win is by recycling. Recycling doesn’t just help you win , it also makes the world a better place.

Dr. Recess came to our school and taught us some games. It was a lot fun and we should play them together in recess. In my opinion, all the games were great. Those games help you exercise and stay fit. The people from our community pay for our equipment so we should take care of all of it. Recess is a privilege, so make sure you do all your homework. Be respectful and responsible so that you do not have to give up your recess time.

He Life of a Pumpkin

By Abby Chambers

Pumpkin seeds start out as a small little seed. They grow in to big pumpkins.

Pumpkins are members of the squash family when you plant a pumpkin seed

The hill should be 3 feet (1m) to 6 feet (2m) apart to give the plant lots of room to grow.

After about one week, two leaves appear where each pumpkin seed was planted. Soon vines start to grow, flowers start to bloom on the vines. The flower shrivels up and a small pumpkin grows under them. The pumpkin gets bigger and bigger and bigger! Soon it’s a big orange pumpkin!
