Grade 9 MYP 4UNIT 2: ‘The Edge”To be prepared for our next unit you will need to gain some deeper knowledge of the way in which artists have responded to landscapes. ( make sure you understand what is meant by ‘landscape art’)We will do this in a way that meets the objectives for Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding, and Criterion D: Responding.You will need to do the following:-Investigate the artists from the list below. You must post an image of an artwork from each category, with fully cited source ( title, date, artist, medium, and the exact web page you got the image from). Each image must be accompanied by a brief explanation of what the artwork is, and what the artist intended to communicate. To do this you will need to include a little contextual information.NB: we are only looking at landscape images ( this includes representations of sea, sky, as well as land). The links in this document should only a start to your investigation, you will need to search for your own sources. Make sure they are reliable….. as grade 9 students this is an important idea - how do you know a source is reliable?These 8 artists have very different approaches to landscape and make art about landscapes for very different reasons. What did the artist intend by making it? Context = when and where was the artwork made? How did this impact the making of the artwork? (do we see the artwork in its original setting or a displaced setting?) What was the artist’s world like? Who were meant to be the audience? Use the questions on the analysing artwork sheet posted on our webpage.Formal Qualities = To analyse the formal qualities use the list of questions on the Analysing Artworks sheet posted on our webpage.Once you have posted this investigation in a way shows you have considered presentation you will make a ‘study’ of one of the artworks – this means making a drawing, sketch, painting of part or the whole of an image to show understanding of one or more of the qualities that you have noted ( For example if you mentioned the way the artist uses expressive brushwork you would make a study that showed what they did). ................
