Title: 21st Century Learning (One-Day Module)

One-Day Module: 21st Century Learning

and Instruction

Title Session 1: WV 21st Century CSOs, Learning Skills and Technology Tools

Big Idea: Revised content standards and objectives have more rigor and relevance.

Enduring Understanding: West Virginia 21st Century Content Standards and Objectives (CSOs) require higher order thinking (HOT) and technology skills. Learners in the 21st century will understand all content at high levels of thinking and in the context of real world applications.

Essential Questions:

▪ What does change look like in my school and how does it impact instruction?

▪ What is 21st century content and why is it important in our changing world?

▪ Why were the WV CSOs revised to include more rigor and relevance?

▪ How will the revised CSOs impact my instruction?

▪ How will changes in technology impact my school?

Performance Objectives:

Participants will know…

▪ 21st Century Context: Making content relevant to students’ lives and creating opportunities for students to interact with each other and with teachers and other knowledgeable adults in authentic learning experiences is critical to developing students’ engagement, motivation and attitudes about learning.

▪ 21st Century Content: Core Academic Subjects remain the foundation of a good education. However, the focus should expand beyond minimal mastery to high levels of understanding and skill. Learning skills and use of technology tools must be integrated into the delivery of the curriculum.

Participants will be able to…

▪ Create connections between instruction and the real world outside the classroom both now and in the future

▪ Differentiate between standards, objectives and performance descriptors in the CSOs

▪ Examine the CSOs for higher order thinking skills

▪ Analyze changes in revised CSOs and how they will impact schools and instruction
