AUGUST 2018

SMALLBORE RIFLE

Wayne Nunn

The July “Match” was lightly attended. We had two in Conventional Prone, two in F Class, and one 3P shooter. Nevertheless, we had a good time and we beat the heat. High shooter in Prone was Bruce Finley with 185-55x. Wayne Nunn was only three points behind him. High man in F Class was Guy Taylor with 1154-48x, followed by Tome Evans. The 3P shooter was Abigail Zinsmeyer with 578-21x. It might seem senseless to shoot with so few, but it’s all good practice, and practice makes winners.

HIGH POWER RIFLE

John Kelley

We had eight shooters at the July High Power XTC training match, which was held on Saturday, July 21st, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. It was a hot day, with the wind being tricky during the 500. John Cholak, who is heading to Camp Perry, had the high score with a 770-17. Wayne Nunn was second, shooting a 749-18. John just missed shooting a clean 200 yard rapid, letting one leak out. Ended up with a 199-6X.

[pic] The next scheduled High Power training match is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. Match fee is $20 for adults, $10 for Military, and $10 for juniors. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Fun begins at 0830 for squadding and set up. First rounds go down range at 0900. This will be the 88 round NRA across the course training match. It is NRA 'APPROVED". Shooters will score and pull targets. Shooters choosing not to pull targets must provide a substitute puller. In case the match is cancelled, I will update the Organization’s calendar the night before.

The next CMP/Garand match will be held on Saturday, September 22nd, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels.

STMTC Precision Pistol Match 7 28 2018 Report

Eight competitors showed up on a hot humid July Saturday to shoot the STMTC 1800 Precision Pistol Training Match, with five shooting in the regulation one-handed method, and three shooting with a two hand hold. Kris Beerman won the match with a 1615-31X aggregate score, Harvey Dickens shot a 1332-13X for 2nd, and David Hoover a 1068-0X for third. In the .22 match Kris and Harvey took 1st and 2nd respectively, and Jay Castillo was third. In the centerfire match, Kris and Harvey again took 1st and 2nd, and a revolver shooter Alan Wood took third. In the .45 match, Kris and Harvey repeated their 1st and 2nd places and David Hoover took third. In the two-hand category, David Braun shot a 1359-15X to win. Philip Beekley and David Neathery were first time competitors shooting .22 only with David coming in second in the .22 match to Dave’s first place.

BRAUN 4H JUNIOR REPORT

Local 4H Shooting Sports Clubs practiced with STMTC’s 4H director and coach, Chris Rabago, in preparation for the Texas 4H State Games in July. Gareth Henderson (age 14) won 3rd place in cap and ball, 4th place pistol silhouette - any sight, and 2nd place hunter pistol silhouette - any sight.  Jarred Crowley (age 17) and Katelyn Henderson (age 18) shot personal bests in 3P small-bore rifle and light rifle. Jarred placed 5th in sporter high power, 4th in .45 pistol camp perry round - metalic sight, 4th hunter skills and safety, 2nd in hunter decision making, 2nd in wildlife management, and 2nd in hunting live fire.   Katelyn placed 7th in small bore rifle silhouettes. Coaches Linda Henderson and Craig Bourquin were a tremendous help to our 4H children as they continued to refine and advance their skills. 4H practices will not take place in July, but will resume in August as 4H clubs begin to register children.

Sadly, Braun 4H, who has enjoyed and benefited many years from STMTC’s support, voted to disband their club. The members of Braun 4H are grateful for a tradition of excellence, fun, family, and marksmanship set by longtime coaches and managers like: Dr. Daniel Ramos and Dennis Anguiano. Current coaches and managers, Dr. Christopher Rabago, David Del Toro, and Patty Del Toro, learned a tremendous amount from the example set by Dr. Ramos and Dennis. But, the traditions valued by Braun 4H are not ending because these traits are shared by STMTC and other local 4H shooting sports clubs.

Dr. Rabago as STMTC’s 4H director will continue to coach and will work with local 4H shooting sports clubs to make available our Blackhawk range for practices regardless of 4H club affiliation. To this extent, STMTC will continue to honor its mission to foster marksmanship education and training to the youth of South Texas. Local 4H club members are encouraged to join STMTC to enjoy benefits such as access to the Blackhawk range and use of shooting equipment (as available). If you are interested in 4H shooting sports with STMTC, please contact Dr. Rabago at rabago@ for further information.

Vintage Military Rifle Postal Match Update

Seven targets submitted so far. Three of them are from the match director, and four from people who aren't even STMTC members, including three submissions from New York state, and one from Doncaster UK. STMTC vintage rifle shooter, we need your targets! Reminder, submission cutoff date is October 30th, but the sooner you submit, the sooner you can try again for a better score, but submit only one try per rifle. (Hint: Print a bunch of targets, shoot several times, and submit the best. So, for example, if you have an M1903, M1903A3, and a Enfield Nr1 MkIII, you can submit three targets, even at different times, if that's more convenient.

Once again, go here to view rules and download targets for printing:

Current match statistics are shown in the accompanying table:

Welcome to the first-ever STMTC Postal Training Matchfor Vintage Military Rifles.

We may discover a few kinks in the system as we bring this project to reality, so feedback and constructive comments are welcome. Note the lengthy date window to participate; this allows scheduling your range visits to avoid rainy weather, since this event covers springtime in South Texas. Just keep in mind the spirit and intent of this training: Get out and exercise your vintage military firearm!

Here are a few guidelines:

• No match fee!

• Eligible rifles:

Any bolt-action (non-semiauto) military rifle designed prior to 1950, caliber .256 (6.5mm) or greater, up to .32 cal.

Condition: as-issued, except repairs to maintain serviceability; upgrades as originally introduced that would have been typically performed by arsenal or armorer during the rifle's service life.

Original-specification reproduction firearms and accoutrements are allowed. Examples: a reproduction Warner-Swasey scope on a Ross Mark III sniper rifle, or a reproduction bipod appropriate for a specific rifle.

• Shoot from any position: Standing, bench, prone, sitting, or kneeling. 10-rounds slow-fire and the same for rapid-fire (two targets). Unlimited sighters on an extra target if you want to print one just for that.

• Use any ammo (including hand loads and cast bullets), unless prohibited at the range where you will shoot. For example, incendiary rounds or tracer ammo may be forbidden, due to dry conditions.

• Required equipment: Eye and ear protection.

• Optional equipment: prone mat/rug, period-type front rest (simple sandbag or rags piled on board/brick/dirt-pile, etc.,), spotting scope, non-competition glove(s), original or period-appropriate modern-repro military-style sling and field jacket, bayonet.

• Be sure to fill out all the blanks of the target forms.

• Submit as many results as you have rifles that you want to enter. One entry per rifle. Be sure to submit together for each rifle both the appropriate "Rapid Fire" and "Slow Fire" targets. Self-scoring is optional. Match director will score/re-score all targets as needed.

• Submit targets NLT April 30th, 2018 using:

▪ Email scanned images or photos: philip30cal@

▪ Fax: 210-695-8925

▪ USPS: 8910 Oakwood Court, San Antonio, 78240-3592 postmarked on or before that date.

Questions? Call 210-385-0629 voice/text, or email philip30cal@.

Allowing for slow USPS delivery, winners will be announced at the June STMTC meeting, Thursday, June 7, 2018. If there are enough entries, we may have winners in several different categories, like iron sight and scoped, Allies and Triple-Entente/Axis, bench and prone, etc.

Stand by for possible prizes announcement (donations welcome!)

DEFENSE / TACTICAL

Fredd Bergman

The Defense Division will be conducting our first training drill of the year on Saturday the 15th of September at Black Hawk, 9:00am – 4:00pm. . Fee is $20 for members, Law Enforcement and Active Duty Armed Service Members, and $35 for non-members.

Drill requires 350 rounds of ammunition. We will allow .22LR conversion kits, but be aware, utilizing the .22LR substantially encumbers the desired effects of the training. All carbine events are two-gun, with pistol, if individual shooters choose to run it that way and practice transitions. Following is a list of mandatory equipment: rifle, at LEAST two magazines (more is better), magazine pouch, hearing protection, eye protection, rugged footgear, headgear, shooting mat (optional on that one but good to have), dummy cartridge. Elbow and knee pads are recommended, but not required. Participants must already be proficient with their firearms.

This is a basic course in tactical fundamentals, involves shooting while moving, and is conducted in an "always hot" environment. We have done kids as young as 12-years-old in this course of fire. Your firearm will remain loaded at all times, as it is in the field. Appropriate uniform is necessary. Law Enforcement personnel wear your duty gear. Military participants wear appropriate kit. Civilians can wear whatever, as long as you meet basic equipment requirements. Pre-registration is required. Contact Tactics@ or call Fredd at 210-619-9340.

SPECIAL YOUTH INTRODUCTORY RIFLE EVENT

George Becquet, Fredd Bergman

A private, dual-certification Rifle course for youths will be conducted at Black Hawk Saturday, 25 AUGUST, 9:00 am until approximately 6:00pm. Participants will receive two formal certificates. George Becquet will issue an NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting certificate, and Fredd will issue an STMTC Introduction to Basic Rifle Activities certificate. This is a retail course assisting in maintaining ongoing training activities at Black Hawk. The course has been marketed retail at $150. STMTC and CTSA members and their guests are invited to participate for $100. Each participant will receive an NRA Basic Rifle student text, and the certificates. Adults are welcome, but this course will be directed to youths, and the youngest one we have registered so far is 9-years-old.

We need to know if you have a young one to participate by Sunday night, August 19th. We realize it’s a late announcement, but it is a private course and decided last minute to open it up to members. We will require one responsible adult for the kids. If you have two or three, one adult will be fine for your small group. We have room for about three more kids, first come, first served. Call Fredd with questions at 210-619-9340, or inquire with your contact information to Admin@.
