CATE Board Reports ? September 2017Denise Mikkonen, PresidentPresidents Report – September 2017 - I’m busy preparing for the next board meeting, participated in the advisory call, and creating the agenda and committees for this year. ?The first issue of California English was published and I am working on a piece for our next issue.? Reservations have been made for the NCTE Annual meeting in St. Louis. Since Mary our co-treasurer has been promoted, (congratulations Mary, you deserve it) she had decided to step down as our treasurer.? Problem solving via phone calls ensued, between Greg, Mary and I.? We found a candidate, and phone conversations continued.? End result we have a new co-treasurer Angela Halpin who is most anxious to begin.? Yahoo.? My trip to Colonial Williamsburg to the Teacher Institute was amazing. The learning was priceless, I got to participate in a debate at the House of Burges about the Declaration of Independence on July 4th.? This was followed by a reading of the Declaration by Thomas Jefferson.? It gave me chills.? Filing and fireworks to patriotic music.? I also learned how to tend to tobacco, fire a musket and attend two trials.? The most amazing part was sitting in surrender field writing.? Each step of our learning involved integrating writing, debate, discussion.? The entire program was underwritten by a family in Escondido who has committed to sending 100 California Teachers each year. ?Since my return I have been working on replicating my learning in the classroom with my students.? We are having a blast. I’m running a book study for my site – The Growth Mindset Coach.? We have meet twice, additionally I am presenting our next staff meeting.? I have sent the flyer and a note to our district executive directors reminding them folks from PUSD are on the board and we’d like a good showing of PUSD folks.? Additionally I have sent the flyer to my princi-pals (colleagues who are principals).? Summer Writing Camps for the SMWP went well this summer.? In PUSD we had 1 camps for students 2 – 5, 1 for students 2 – 8th and 1 for middle school, and one for HS (thanks to Jeannine for running the HS Camp and our newest board member Carol Battle ran the middle school camp), serving about 300 students in PUSD, we also had camps throughout San Diego North County in Oceanside and San Marcos School Districts.? And reaffirmed the belief that all students can learn to love to write.? Some of our open Mic Sessions are held at Barnes and Noble and they continue to be my favorite time. I love to hear our young writers find their voices.? I love my new class, had several middle schooler’s come back to check in.? Miss them so. I am looking forward to seeing? you all and planning an excellent convention in San Diego. Liz McAninch, Past PresidentJill Hamilton-Bunch, Vice PresidentProfessional Development? This summer, I provided professional development throughout the summer for the Exeter, Panama Buena Vista, and Bakersfield City School Districts regarding instruction for English Learners.I also was the key note for the Westside Small Districts of Kern County in August. ?Vice President DutiesI made hotel and meal arrangements for our September 15-16 in Santa Clara at the Marriott, as well as arrangements for the remainder of the 2017-2018 year.Future meetings and locations are:December 2-3--Doubletree Santa AnaMarch 8--Town and Country San DiegoMay 5-6--Hyatt Regency SFO (Tentative)Carole LeCren, SecretaryI took it upon myself to go through the notebook of resolutions that Bill Younglove gave me at the last board meeting and scan each one with the purpose of posting them on CATEweb, which is now done. But I also put together a summary of the types of resolutions that we have put out there over the years—because what we propose helps define who we are as an organization. Other than that, I’m working on keeping an accurate board member list and roster that can be used in all areas of the organization (on CATEweb, in California English, with board members, and in the program for the convention). We seem to continue to scramble to create an accurate list. In fact, I’m not even sure that this board report list is accurate.Other than those summer tasks, I’m still keeping the minutes, and prepared to do business cards for those who need them at this board meeting in September.Greg Johnson, Co-TreasurerMary Adler, Co-Treasurer/MAL CollegeHi everyone,A big thank you to Angela Halpin for agreeing to take on my co-treasurer position and to Jeannine and Denise for their help in facilitating the conversation. I plan to attend this board meeting to help Angela and Greg with the transition, so I’ll see you all on Saturday! My board report is below.Best,MaryThis summer I completed a book chapter, "Tracing the Story Behind the Story: A Cross-Text, New Historicist Approach to Historical Fiction" for a new volume to be published by MLA titled?Options for Teaching YA Literature.?I had an article accepted for future publication with?California English, "“Own It”: Empowering Writers Through A Community of Feedback” (co-authored with Kim Vose, a composition lecturer and Erin Jones, a high school English teacher).I coordinated the writing of CSU Channel Islands’ "Recognize and Refer"?manual for faculty and staff, gathering input from agencies across campus who provide resources to students in need of support.?I attended the SCTE board meeting in June at SCTE member Joanne Fahey’s house and arranged for college credit for our fall conference. I met with our new SCTE treasurer, Randi Seligson, to provide her with training on the treasurer work and to transfer the SCTE financial documents to her.?As CATE co-treasurer, I generated the annual reconciliation statements to councils and mailed them an accounting for the 2016-17 year plus a check for any advance for the 2017-18 year. The reconciliation from 2016 to 2017 resulted in smaller totals to councils than may have been expected, due to the difference in turnout between the past two conferences.?I requested annual reports from council treasurers by August 15; many thanks to Capitol, Southland, TUCATE, GSDCTE, and Redwood for sending them along. Hoping to receive the rest soon so that we can file our annual tax report this fall. Finally, we had an amazing family trip this July to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan; even the heat and humidity could not dampen a spectacular cultural learning experience.I began my new position as full time Interim Associate Dean for Arts and Sciences in August and have been busy learning the ropes! All best,Mary AdlerAngus Dunstan, Capitol RepSusan Dillon, Central RepJanina Schulz and David Wisar, FACET Co-RepsFACET Board ReportWe continue to work on Yosemite Conference, getting presenters and attendees. It's especially exciting to have Mark Overmeyer, author of Let's Talk, as our morning keynote speaker.? We are also trying something a bit new our luncheon session: a panel of professionals (from the worlds of advertising, criminal justice, and business) will be sharing ways writing is essential to their careers.? They're coming armed with documents from their field, too.? After lunch, our SCTE Vice President, Tracy Sprague, will lead a session on the use of those mentor texts in the secondary classroom.? We're looking forward to a valuable, vibrant day!? If you'd like to join us, check out HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" for all the details. This summer was a whirlwind of fun changes.? We learned about scholarships that are available to students interested in joining the Marine Corps after graduation from high school.? On two separate occasions, we were able to sit down with recruits who were in the process of completing their 12 weeks of boot camp and ask questions.? My roommate was a reading specialist from Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove, and we spent time discussing students’ reading and writing skills, comparing school-approved programs, and reflecting on what strategies have been effective in the classroom.??I am in the process of making plans to attend the NCTE convention this year in St. Louis, Missouri.Gina M. The conference focused on CAP—California Acceleration Project. The average student in a California community college graduates or transfers to a university in 4-6 years; as a result, the State Chancellor’s Office has established various strategies and programs that will allow students to increase student completion in college-level courses, notably in English and math. The California Acceleration Project models itself from work done at community colleges in New York and Florida. A key component to acceleration is to focus on reading and writing. The conference, then, allowed us to participate in pedagogical strategies that could be modeled in our classes. My college created a new course that allows students to sequence from English 100 to English 101. This past summer the state legislatures passed AB705 which will thenRequires community colleges to use high school grades in English/math placement and maximize students’ likelihood of completing transferable, college-level courses within one yearProhibits colleges from requiring remedial courses that lengthen students’ time to degree unless placement research shows that they are “highly unlikely” to succeed in transfer-level coursesProvides for colleges to require students to receive extra support in co-requisite models instead of stand-alone remedial coursesPassed the CA Assembly unanimously in June, passed the Senate Education Committee unanimously in July, passed the Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously in August. Also, during the summer, I became the co-chair for Cultural Equity on our campus. We held our retreat in August to plan for the year as we want to promote our work and present equity strategies.I also completed both the pedagogical and training classes for our new online learning management system, Canvas. The community colleges are facing many challenges with low enrollment and mandates from the State. In the end, our students are what guides us to do what needs to be done.Sommer Iamele, MAL Unspecified[newly elected to the board]Annie Gervais, MAL Small Council; CATE 2019 ChairJoan Williams, MembershipCATE MEMBERSHIP REPORTSeptember 2017# COUNCIL9/1512/152/16 5/169/1612/162/175/179/17+/-1 Redwood333426242621182420-42 Upper21146161720121716-13 Capitol90903272739485139138-14 Central406472302333328267262413414+15 Fresno767119363636275250-2 TUCATE282610161516161918-17 Kern8897366211911810914997-528 Southland281310232618614591267335339+49 San Diego6664109140138135505863+550 Out-of-state222315262729152021+1 55 Libraries14 1411121312121213+1 99 Comps222111122--TOTAL 1127121880013561407134087412401191-49Distributed copies of roster to board members as requested.Managed monthly roster updates and bad addresses and worked to resolve the inaccuracies and inconsistencies.Assisted members with questions and concerns regarding their memberships Requested current NCTE roster Sent invitations to all Redwood writing contest teacher participants to join CATEManaged and ordered membership supplies such as ribbons, membership reminders, cards, envelopes, etc.Michelle Berry, Convention CoordinatorBoard Report – September 2017Convention CoordinatorSchool has begun again, and I’m enjoying the busy-ness of retirement. We’ll see how it goes and continue to make adjustments as needed. Please take your bundled flyers from the side table at Saturday’s meeting, and those of the few folks who can’t be present. Again, remember to get these in the hands of as many potential attendees as possible. If you need more, email me and I’ll have some sent to you. I’ll have extras with me at this meeting in case you already wish to increase your take-home stack.Online registration is up and going. The Board and presenters are reminded that they are to register BY DECEMBER 1. The Call for Presenters’ deadline is OCTOBER 1.
