Workforce Region 17

The Green Jobs Survey for Workforce Region 17 (Polk County) was conducted in 2010 by the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation, in partnership with Workforce Florida, Inc. and was funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. The regional data are designed to inform local workforce, education, and economic development partners of the dynamics of the green economy. The survey aims to help providers tailor training needs to green occupations most in demand.

The number of green jobs in Workforce Region 17 in 2010 was 1,499. This represented 0.8 percent of total employment. Through a combination of new hiring and converting existing positions to green, employers expected to add 352 jobs in 2011.

Green jobs in the region reflected Polk County's strength as a distribution center, agricultural products producer, and the county's emphasis on water quality. The largest green job was heavy and tractortrailer truck driver.

The green activity group with the greatest number of jobs in Region 17 was produce clean transportation and fuels with 630 jobs.

The second largest activity was prevent, reduce, and clean up pollution with 460 jobs.

Conserve natural resources was the activity group with the third largest number of jobs (303), while increase energy efficiency ranked fourth with 151 jobs.

The majority of green jobs were in transportation and warehousing (630 jobs); administrative/support and waste management/remediation services (398 jobs); and construction (180 jobs).

The highest expected growth rates were in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting (100.0 percent); construction (32.3 percent); and mining (30.0 percent).

The top green jobs in Region 17 in 2010 were heavy and tractor and trailer truck drivers (586 jobs); farmworkers for crop, nursery and greenhouse (106 jobs); production workers (92 jobs); and automotive technicians (91 jobs).

The highest paid green job among the top 25 in Region 17 was construction managers ($47.84 hourly) and the lowest paid green job was septic tank servicers ($8.73 hourly).
