DEFINITIONS

Structural Glued-Laminated (Glulam) Timber: An engineered, stress-rated timber product assembled from selected and prepared wood laminations bonded together with adhesives and with the grain of the laminations approximately parallel longitudinally.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** The SIMPLE FRAMING SYSTEM? uses highest-quality BCI? Joists or ALLJOIST? (AJS?) products, VERSA-LAM? laminated veneer lumber, VERSA-STUD? laminated veneer framing lumber and other engineered wood products with matched depths that work together using fewer pieces and longer lengths. The result is longer spans, time saved during cutting and fitting, less waste and lower overall cost since less product is needed.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

General: An engineered laminated veneer framing lumber and other engineered wood products with matched depths that work together using fewer pieces and longer lengths.

Design: The framing system (SIMPLE FRAMING SYSTEM as developed by Boise Cascade Company) shall use Engineered Wood Products (EWP) and engineering services in an integrated system of products engineered for EWP wood framing.

Structural Performance:

Structural glued-laminated timber and connectors shall withstand the effects of structural loads shown on Drawings without exceeding allowable design working stresses listed in AITC 117 or determined according to ASTM D 3737 and acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Retain "Seismic Performance" Paragraph below for projects requiring seismic design. Model building codes and ASCE/SEI 7 establish criteria for buildings subject to earthquake motions. If retaining paragraph, show seismic design criteria on Drawings.

Seismic Performance: Structural glued-laminated timber and connectors shall withstand the effects of earthquake motions determined according to ASCE/SEI 7.

SUBMITTALS

Submit under provisions of Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements.

Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:

Preparation instructions and recommendations.

Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.

Installation methods.

Certificates of Conformance: Issued by a qualified testing and inspecting agency indicating that structural glued-laminated timber complies with requirements in AITC A190.1.

Material Certificates: For preservative-treated wood products, from manufacturer. Indicate type of preservative used and net amount of preservative retained.

Research/Evaluation Reports: For structural glued-laminated timber and timber connectors, from ICC-ES.

Certification: Submit certification that the decking size selected will meet the calculated design wind pressure and snow loads. Copy of manufacturers product guide shall qualify.

LEED Submittals: Provide documentation for the following Credits:

Product Data for Credit MR 5.1 and Credit MR 5.2: Submit data, including location and distance from Project of material manufacturer and point of extraction, harvest or recovery for main raw material.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manufacturer Qualifications: Minimum 10 year experience manufacturing similar products.

Manufactured in accordance with ANSI A190.1 and ASTM D905 and supported by an independent inspection agency. Product stamp applied by the manufacturer shall be the quality assurance.

Installer Qualifications: Minimum 2 year experience installing similar products.

Installer shall be familiar with and refer to the manufacturers installation guide for each product and assembly. Installer shall consult the manufacturer for guidance on Project specifics.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.

Finish products designated by Architect scheduled be exposed in the finished project.

Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship is approved by Architect.

Rebuild mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

PRE-INSTALLATION MEETINGS

Convene minimum two weeks prior to starting work of this section.

Product delivery lead times vary by time of year and advanced planning is required to insure timely and efficient installation.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Delivery: Verify manufacturer, species, size, appearance grade, lengths, pattern, face finish, and end joints.

Comply with provisions in AITC 111.

Storage:

Units shall be stored on a level area with adequate blocking to avoid warping.

Water-resistant wrapping shall be used on top and sides when stored in uncovered locations. Water resistant wrap shall be `open' at bottom to prevent moisture trapping.

Products shall be separated from ground moisture during storage.

Handling: Product units and pieces shall not be dropped or dragged and shall be handled in a way to prevent surface and other damage.

Deliver and store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging bearing the brand name and manufacturer's identification until ready for installation.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's recommended limits.

SEQUENCING

Ensure that products of this section are supplied to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.

Beam Appearance:

Architectural: Voids greater than 3/4 inch ( 19 mm) are filled, three sides (excluding the top) are planed or sanded, and edges are eased on the bottom face of the member. Refer to Drawings for scheduled locations.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** These beams are used in concealed applications or in other places where appearance is not of primary importance, such as such as commercial buildings, warehouses, and garages.

Industrial: Voids are not filled, and only the two wide surfaces are planed. Refer to Drawings for scheduled locations.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** BOISE GLULAM? beam products are manufactured with exterior-grade or wet-use adhesives that comply with all recognized standards. The benefit of the BOISE GLULAM? beams is the flexibility of the product. Our beams are manufactured in a variety of widths and depths with lengths up to 66 feet, with or without camber. A wide array of appearance options and layups make this one of the most versatile engineered wood products available. BOISE GLULAM? beams are available through nationwide distribution.

Camber or Straightness: Tolerances are intended for use with straight or slightly cambered beams. The tolerances permitted at the time of manufacture, without allowance for dead load deflection, are as follows:

Up to 20 feet (6096 mm) - Plus or minus 1/4 inch (6 mm).

Over 20 feet (6096 mm)- Add 1/8 inch (3 mm) per each additional 20 feet (6096 mm) or fraction thereof, but not to exceed plus or minus 3/4 inch (19 mm).

Squareness: The tolerance of the cross section shall be within plus or minus 1/8 inch (3 mm) per foot of specified depth, unless a specially shaped beam is selected.

Rimboard: A continuously supported structural element located at the joist elevation in an end bearing wall or parallel to the joist framing that is the full depth of the joist space and manufactured in minimum continuous 8-foot-long segments for the length of the wall, and which is used for any combination of the following:

Transfer, from above to below, all vertical loads at the rim board location.

Provide diaphragm attachment (sheathing to top edge of rim board).

I-joist rim boards shall have flanges that are at least 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) wide.

General: Comply with DOC PS 20 and with applicable grading rules of inspection agencies certified by ALSC's Board of Review.

Standard for Solid-Sawn Wood Roof Decking: Comply with AITC 112.

First paragraph allows Contractor to choose from several species that have similar grading requirements; second paragraph allows specifier to choose species. Roof Decking Species: Balsam fir, Douglas fir-larch, Douglas fir-larch (North), hem-fir, hem-fir (North), southern pine, spruce pine-fir (North), western hemlock, or western hemlock (North).

Roof Decking Nominal Size: Refer to Drawing.

Grade Stamps: Factory mark each item with grade stamp of grading agency. Apply grade stamp to surfaces that will not exposed to view.

Accessory Materials

Fasteners for Solid-Sawn Roof Decking: Provide fastener size and type complying with AITC 112 for thickness of deck used.

Nails: Common; complying with ASTM F 1667, Type I, Style 10.

Spikes: Round; complying with ASTM F 1667, Type III, Style 3.

Fastener Material: Hot-dip galvanized steel.

Bolts for Anchoring Roof Decking to Walls: Carbon steel; complying with ASTM A 307 with ASTM A 563 hex nuts and, where indicated, flat washers.

Provide hot-dip zinc coated anchors.

Sealants: Latex, complying with applicable requirements in Section 07 91 26 - Joint Fillers "Joint Sealants" and recommended by sealant manufacturer and manufacturer of substrates for intended application.

Penetrating Sealer: Clear sanding sealer complying with Section 09 93 23.53 - Interior Finishing "Staining and Transparent Finishing" and compatible with topcoats specified for use over it.

FABRICATI0N

Labeling Requirements: Each length of product shall be stamped at the mill indicating certification mark, mill identification, grade name, and inspection certificate. All labels shall be placed on surfaces where it will not be exposed to view when installed. Request a letter of conformance from manufacturer for dual sided products where labeling will detract from appearance.

Authority: WWPA or APA EWS as required.

TIMBER CONNECTORS

Fabricate connectors from material with bearing plates, deformed bar anchors, and side plates as indicated or required.

Penetrating Sealer: Manufacturer's standard, transparent, penetrating wood sealer that is compatible with indicated finish.

EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

Do not begin installation until supporting anchorages have been properly prepared.

If foundation and supporting anchorage points are the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

SUPPORTING FRAMING

Supporting framing members shall be straight and true and clear of debris and excess moisture.

Framing member spacing shall not exceed value used in load-span tables or as otherwise engineered to determine framing lay-out.

INSTALLATION

Install products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, approved submittals, and in proper relationship with adjacent construction.

Products damaged on site shall not be used. Adjoining and adjacent products shall be tight and in alignment.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Decking can be used in protected wet use conditions and the engineer of record should factor in the corresponding load factors when moisture content exceeds 15% for extended periods of time.

Products shall not be installed when or where moisture content of pieces exceeds 15%.

Fastener size, type, and locations shall be per engineered design and construction.

Fasteners for engineered construction shall be specified by Engineer-of-Record.

PROTECTION

Protect installed products until completion of project.

Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
