Lesson plan - Study Island
|Math Lesson: 2- and 3-Dimensional Shapes |Grade Level: 6 |
Lesson Summary: Students classify two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Advanced learners make patterns from regular polygons that form figures, and
struggling learners identify polygons by their names.
Lesson Objectives:

The students will know…
that there are many different two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, each with different properties.

The students will be able to…
recognize two-dimensional shapes as polygons.
define and classify polygons.
analyze characteristics and properties of a three-dimensional shape.
Learning Styles Targeted:

Visual

Auditory

Kinesthetic/Tactile

Pre-Assessment:
Before students arrive, check your classroom to be sure that there are a number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects in the room. If necessary, add
items or pictures of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

Give students post-it notes that read either two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Direct students to walk around the room and place their post-it notes on items
that they identify as two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Tell students that items shown on posters or photographs in the room can also be tagged.

Note students who do not know the difference between a two-dimensional and three-dimensional object.
Whole-Class Instruction
Materials Needed: PowerPoint presentation*, a computer connected to a projector, paper, ruler, and nets
Procedure:
Presentation:
Walk students through PowerPoint Slides 2 through 7 explaining polygons, how to classify them, polyhedrons, and prisms.

Guided Practice:
Describe a figure and have students draw it. Divide students into pairs and have them take turns describing a figure’s characteristics while the other student
draws the figure as described. Use pentagons, hexagons, triangular prisms, etc.

Independent Practice:
Provide students with the names of the figures on slides 8 and 9 and have students list their properties.

Slide 8 answers:
1. An octagon is an eight-sided polygon.
2. An equilateral triangle is a triangle with all three sides congruent.
3. A square pyramid is a polyhedron with a square base and equilateral triangles as faces.

Slide 9 answers:
4. A hexagonal prism is a prism with hexagonal bases.
5. A convex polygon is a polygon that has no diagonal with points outside the polygon.
6. A pentagon is a five-sided polygon.

Closing Activity:
Show students a design patterns on slides 10 and 11. Have them find specific shapes and list the properties of each type.
Advanced Learner
Materials Needed: grid paper, ruler, and colored pencils
Procedure:
Have students make a two-dimensional design on grid paper that consists of regular polygons. Tell students that you want them to color code the polygons and make a
key that explains the color-coding. After students have finished working, allow them to share their designs with the rest of the group.
Struggling Learner
Materials Needed: paper and ruler
Review all of the polygons and their properties.

Have students draw polygons based on descriptions that you provide.

Discuss the polygons that they drew to make sure that they are correct. If not, provide correct sketch.

Have students work in pairs where one student draws a figure that the other describes.
