T5 ADAPTERS
T5 TL tubes
T5 TL tubes are the modern version of the common T8/TLD tube. The T5 has a number of advantageous features compared to the T8:
• High efficiency, energy saving.
• The T5 tube lasts twice as long as a T8 tube (16,000/20,000 hours).
• High frequency TL, flicker free lighting.
• Environmentally friendly due to a longer life span and lower amounts of mercury.
• Available via Emmlight in the colours 830, 840, 865 or 930, 940 or 965 (high CRI).
• No start-up problems.
A T5 tube has a diameter of 16 mm and a G5 fitting. A T8 tube has a diameter of 26 mm and has a G13 fitting. Also the lengths of the tubes differ. This to ensure that they can not be fitted in the same fixtures.
The product
The T5 Adapter is a product which can be applied 1 on 1 in order to replace T8/TLD tubes. The product consists of:
1. A high frequency T5 TL tube (high efficient or high output).
2. An adapter which:
• Converts the G5 fitting to a G13 fitting.
• Contains a ballast.
• Converts the length of the T5 tube to that of a T8 tube.
• Certain versions come with a replacement for the old starter.
The T5 adapter ensures that energy efficient T5 tubes can be used directly in old T8 luminaries (which include an electromagnetic ballast and a starter) without making any adjustments. This leads to savings on energy consumption of up to 50% without having to make compromises in light output.
The adapters are available in several different types, but the base product of Emmlight is the 28 Watt 120 cm version which can be used to replace the regular T8 tubes of 36 Watt. They are available as a round version, as a version fitted with a reflector (in situations where extra high Lux values are required) or as a version without a reflector (in situations where the round version does not fit in the existing luminary).
Savings
The use of T5 Adapters leads to significant savings in energy consumption. These savings are achieved in two different ways:
1. The T5 tube gives the same amount of light at a lower wattage.
2. The Adapter (and the new starter) ensures that the electromagnetic ballast is no longer used. A very efficient electronic ballast is used instead.
In practice this leads to, for example, the following savings:
• T8 luminary 30X120 cm, twice T8/TLD 36 Watt TL tube - consumption 100 Watt*
• Replace by two 120 cm T5 Adapters of 28 Watt each - consumption 56 Watt
• Saving = 44%
In a situation with an annual amount of 2,600 hours (50 hour weekly) and a kWH rate of € 0,20 this would mean:
(2,600 x 44) / 1,000 x 0,2 = € 22,88 annually.
*Energy consumption when using class B2 ballasts or a lower class. Exact consumption differs from situation to situation.
• T8 luminary 30X150 cm, twice T8/TLD 58 Watt TL tube - consumption 150 Watt*
• Replace by two 150 cm T5 Adapters of 35 Watt each - consumption 70 Watt
• Saving = 53%
In a situation with an annual amount of 2,600 hours (50 hour weekly) and a kWH price of € 0,20 this would mean:
(2,600 x 80) / 1,000 x 0,2 = € 41,06 annually.
*Energy consumption when using class B2 ballasts or a lower class. Exact consumption differs from situation to situation.
Depending on your situation, this would mean that the investment in a T5 Adapter is recouped within 1 to 1.5 years on average.
T5 Luminaries
It is not always possible to use T5 adapters. For example in situations with 60x60 TL luminaries, in situations where the luminaries are already high frequency or in situations with a ballast without a starter or in cases where the existing luminaries are simply too old. For these situations Emmlight offers completely new T5 luminaries which can be found elsewhere on this website.

INDUSTRIAL LIGHTING
Electrodeless induction lighting
The base technology for induction lamps is not all that new. The principle of induction lighting was demonstrated around 1890 by scientist Nicola Tesla who created wireless power consumption in his laboratory in New York.
Induction lamps are comparable with TL-lighting due to the fact that they both use gas, which once ‘activated’, reacts with phosphor in glass housings and produces white light. Contrary to fluorescent lamps, induction lamps have a life span of approximately 100,000 hours! This is due to the fact that TL-lamps make use of electrodes, which fail relatively easily. Induction lamps work on the principle of induction (energy transfer by means of a magnetic field). Consider it as wireless lighting.
How do induction lamps work?
Based on the above mentioned principles, light can be generated with simple magnetism. Electromagnetic transformers, which consist of cores with metal coils, by use of a low-frequency create an electromagnetic field around a glass tube which contains gas. The discharge, caused by the coils, causes the acceleration of free electrons which collide with mercury atoms and activate the electrons. If the activated electrons of this higher energy-situation fall back to a lower stable level, they produce ultraviolet radiation. The UV-radiation is converted into visible light by a phosphor coating on the surface of the glass tube. The round continuous shape of the glass of an induction lamp maximises the efficiency of the energy fields generated.
Although being a breakthrough in science in the field of lighting, induction lighting has not been commercially viable until recently. However, recently several barriers have been overcome and costs have decreased. Technological setbacks, such as EMC-distortion, low lumen output as well as the lack of a possibility to dim have been overcome. Nowadays, the clear advantage of induction lighting as well as its attractive price ensures that it is the ideal choice to replace several traditional light sources.
Advantages
• Low power consumption. Energy savings of 50% and more, compared to conventional lighting, are possible.
• Very long life span. With a life span of up to 100,000 hours, the costs of replacement, purchasing, logistics, warehousing, etc. can be reduced.
• Maintenance costs. Expensive maintenance contracts for replacing traditional lighting and ballasts can be suspended. Especially at hard to reach places in factories and other high areas these costs can be considerable.
• Sensitive parts. Due to the absence of sensitive parts such as incandescent light wires and electrodes, induction lamps are much less sensitive to failure.
• Warmth. Induction lamps develop very little warmth.
• Colour rendering. A high colour rendering-index (CRI) is essential for visibility, safety, and comfort. Induction lamps have a natural light colour with a CRI value of 82 or higher.
• Switching on and off. Induction lamps can be switched on and off instantly and have no warming-up or cooling down period.
• Ignition at low temperatures. Induction lamps can be ignited without problems or loss in light output at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.
• Flickering and blinding. Induction lamps do not flicker and have minimal glare. This improves productivity and decreases the chance of headache or dazzle.
• Hum. Induction lamps do not hum and therefore they are very comfortable.
• Environmentally friendly. Due to their low energy consumption and long life span, induction lamps can be used in schemes to reduce the carbon footprint.
• EMC. Induction lamps meet the EMC/EMI standard 2004/108/EC.
• Return on Investment. The average return on investment of an induction lamp compared to traditional lighting is around 3 years.
• Warranty. Emmlight gives 5 years warranty on the induction lamps and the electronic ballast.

DYNAMIC LED OFFICE LIGHTING
Why dynamic light?
Dynamic LED office lighting of Emmlight (market introduction end 2010) is an advanced solution to introduce the dynamics of daylight to the working space.
The dynamic lighting creates a stimulating and natural atmosphere and makes it possible to adjust the light to personal preference, time, and activity. Due to this, the well-being of people as well as their motivation and output improves.
Introducing dynamics to the intensity, colour, and division of (artificial) light can be used for several different applications.
You are most probably well aware of the effects of extra dynamics in theatre lighting, TV, or the going out scene. Worldwide, a lot of research has been conducted to the effects of light on the functioning of human beings. It appears that light dynamics has a major biological influence. These insights are the basis of new applications, such as:
• Increased well-being of human beings which have little to no daylight at their work space.
• Medical applications, for example synchronising the biological clock.
• Creating stimulating effects by altering light colours and intensity.
Until recently, such lighting installations were expensive and very rare. However, the Emmlight system makes dynamic light achievable and affordable.
Luminaries for dynamic light
As from end 2010, Emmlight will be offering two luminaries whereby you will be able to adjust the intensity as well as the light colour; one luminary will be of the standard size of a 60 x 60 cm TL luminary and one will be similar to the 30 x 120 cm TL luminary. Both will be equipped with LEDs of different light colours and can be chained up to 7 maximally. The light is spread via special diffuse
plastic panels in order to avoid glare. Besides, due to the standard dimensions they can be used in virtually any standard suspended ceiling.
Lighting the work space the way you wish
The Emmlight LED panels come with an infrared sensor and a simple remote control, controlling to up to 7 panels. This makes them pre-eminently suitable for lighting individual work spaces and office spaces. The work space can now be lit the way the individual employee desires. The light can be adjusted to the mental condition, the mood, the time of day, and the type of work to be carried out.
Flexible office concepts
Besides, lighting individual, fixed work spaces the LED panels are also very suitable for new flexible work and architectural concepts. With these type of concepts, the same spaces can be used by different people, for different purposes, and at different times. A room which was used for a presentation in the morning could be used as a working room in the afternoon and for a reception in the evening. Obviously, a different type of lighting is required for each occasion. A requirement which can be met with the Emmlight LED panels.
Advantages
• Focuses on the individual.
• Helps biological clock.
• Less fatigue.
• Manual adjustment possible.
• No blinding.
• Energy efficient.
• Very long life span due to use of LED lighting.
• Easy installation in virtually any suspended ceiling.
• Easy operation.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Emmlight works with fixed Asian production partners in China, Taiwan, and Korea, all of which have very strong Research & Development departments; this is a requirement of Emmlight in order to begin cooperation. On the one hand, this means that market developments can be detected quickly and adequately responded to, and translated in to concrete lighting products, and on the other hand that our partners are able to offer new and innovative products to Emmlight.
Our partners work with fixed teams of experienced engineers and designers and they own state of the art production equipment. Together we form strategic alliances in order to lead and conquer the market with our lighting products and to be able to continuously offer the highest quality possible within this constantly changing market. We evaluate the relations with our partners and we cooperate in order to understand (future) market needs, to plan, and to convert all this into a professional product range.
Quality is paramount. We ensure quality by focussing on several important aspects.
Certification marks
On two levels we ensure that the required quality certification marks are present. Our partners meet the ISO9001 standards. Our products are to have at least a CE certification mark as well as several EMC standards such as EN55015, EN55022, EN61000-3-2/03, EN61547, EN61347 and EN61347-2-3.
Whenever required, extra certification marks such as RoHS and TÜV are applied.
Quality Control
Our production partners in Asia are controlled strictly by our own Asian engineers. The management of this experienced team is done from our own Emmlight office in Taipei, Taiwan. In the area of the production facility the following is checked:
• Client satisfaction - Employees are to clearly understand who their internal and external clients are with client satisfaction as their primary goal.
• Safety, environment, hygiene, and tidiness - Parts are to be easily accessible, inventory is to be counted/ estimated easily, and products are to be transported safely & efficiently.
• Visual Management System - Tools which give visual signals and indications are to be clearly visible.
• Scheduling System - A “single pacing process” is used for each product line and the respective sub-suppliers controlling the speed of all upstream activities.
• Use of space, traffic of materials, and production line flow - All space is to be used efficiently, production materials are to be moved over a short distance only, materials and tools are to be within reach.

| |Brightness lamp |
|T5 |Slightly brighter than regular TL lighting due to smaller tube |
|LED |LEDs give a lot of light from a relatively small surface. Therefore this can sometimes be experienced as bright. |
|Induction |Low brightness due to a relatively large light producing surface. |

| |Properties |
|T5 |A T5 lamp is a TL-lamp which is more energy efficient and lasts longer than a traditional TL-lamp (T8). The lamp is both|
| |thinner as well as shorter than the T8, and therefore contains fewer pollutants. Besides this, the T5 lamp is a high |
| |frequency lamp and therefore produces a more pleasant and steady light. |
|LED |A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor whereby electric energy is transformed directly into light. As the |
| |lighting works without any moving parts, the amount of hours is significantly longer than that of, for example, |
| |incandescent light- and halogen lamps, and TL lighting. |
|Induction |The electrodeless induction lamp is a special embodiment of a fluorescent lamp. Due to the absence of electrodes, which |
| |decide the life span of maximally 20,000 hours at ordinary fluorescent lamps (TL and PL), these lamps can have a life |
| |span of up to 100,000 hours. So they are ideal for locations where the cost of replacement - and maintenance is high. |
| | |
| |Temperature |
|T5 |T5 works ideally at normal to warm temperatures. Temperatures of around or below 0 degrees Celsius will lead to |
| |decreased efficiency (as is the case with T8 TL and PL lamps) |
|LED |LED is best not to get too warm. If the temperature of an LED gets higher than 65 to 70 degrees, the life span will be |
| |decreased significantly. This is also the reason of the heat sinks (mostly made out of aluminium) of most LED lamps. |
| |High temperatures of luminaries whereby LED light sources can dispose their warmth are therefore not ideal. On the other|
| |hand, LED works perfectly at low temperatures. Even at minus 30 degrees Celsius LED works fine. |
|Induction |Induction lamps can work in extreme temperatures. Even at minus 40 degrees Celsius, the lamp will work without falter |
| |and without loss in light output. |
| | |
| |Switching on and off moments |
|T5 |The life span of a T5 is influenced negatively by the amount of switching on and off moments. |
|LED |Theoretically, an LED can be switched on and off endlessly without the life span being influenced. |
|Induction |The life span of an induction lamp is influenced negatively by the amount of switching on and off moments. |
| | |
| |Instant Start-up |
|T5 |At first use, T5 lamps have to burn in for several hours. When used in a T5 adapter or in a luminary with an electronic |
| |ballast, they will start up immediately. |
|LED |Yes. An LED does not have to warm up and will switch on immediately. |
|Induction |Induction lamps burn at full capacity right away. Also, the lamps do not need to cool off before they can be switched on|
| |again. |
| | |
| |Power Factor |
|T5 |>0.95 |
|LED |>0.7 |
|Induction |>0.98 |
| | |
| |Hazardous substances |
|T5 |Yes. T5 contains the hazardous substance mercury. Although in significantly smaller amounts than a regular T8 TL-lamp. A|
| |T5 contains 3 mg mercury on average, a T8 15 mg. When a T5 breaks, harmful mercury vapour could escape. |
|LED |No. LED meets the RoHS standards; Restriction of Hazardous Substances. However, as LED lamps contain electronics, they |
| |still need to be disposed of separately. |
|Induction |Yes. An induction lamp contains the mercury alloy amalgam. However, as this is a solid substance, it can easily be |
| |recycled. Also, no hazardous substances can escape in case of breakage of an induction lamp. Due to the long life span, |
| |it is a very sustainable product. |

Pupil Lumen
Pupil Lumen has been introduced due to the fact that many light sources were measured based on values which do not comply with the way the human eye experiences light. For example, sodium lamps with their orange / yellow light have a very high lumen output, but they should be adjusted downwards with a large factor (the so-called S/P ratio) in order to arrive at the lumen output which is experienced by human beings.
Induction lighting has an S/P ratio of 1.62. This means that the lumen output of induction lamps could be multiplied with this factor in order to arrive at the Pupil lumen. Other light sources have the following S/P ratio.
