This is a two-loop course so at least you have some sense of where you are in relation to the finish during the second loop. The backside loop is approximately 800m (.5 mile) so you can work on a long surging kick. Importance of routine:Establishing a routine tends to calm the nerves prior to a race. The more you are familiar with a situation (race day procedures, reviewing the course, sticking to a warm up time schedule, etc.) the better you tend to respond to a potentially stressful situation. Few people are nervous once the race begins, instincts and habits from training countless hours take over, proper preparation prior to a race generally takes care of things in the hour time period before your race begins. Follow the warm up routine you do every day at practice. You have the warm up routine on the team website for guidance if needed. Enjoy the first 5k race of the season. It is rare to race in the evening/at dusk (under the lights). Be loose and let the summer conditioning show (hopefully). Don’t get too up or down about the final time. It usually takes 3-5 races to get comfortable with running at race pace and this if the first step in a long journey this season. This meet has become the preeminent first weekend meet in southwest Ohio. In 2018, there were over 300 finishers in the reserve girls race, 398 in the boys, and over 150 finishers in the varsity races that included multiple state-caliber teams.
