Peace Begins With Ourselves,

Living In Harmony With One Another

And With The Earth

What: The International Day of Peace (Peace Day) was established in 1981 by the United Nations as an annual observance of global non-violence and ceasefire. Every year, people in all parts of the world honor peace in various ways on Peace Day.

When: Annually, 21 September — International Day of Peace (Peace Day).

Where: At United Nations Headquarters and in local communities all over the planet.

Why: Peace Day is celebrated locally to remember that our highest goal is to build cultures of peace. It is a day to energize Peace as an ideal. The United Nations resolution calling on the peoples of the world to observe Peace Day states: The Day should be like a constantly pealing bell, reminding all that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace.

How: Peace Day is observed around the world in a multitude of ways. Many communities observe a minute of silence at 12 noon. Religious and spiritual communities hold Vigils to pray, meditate and reflect on the deeper meaning of peace. Schools hold special assemblies dedicated to peace.
