Cell Project

So you know all about cells/cell organelles and how they work? Prove it! Below are three options of cell projects for you to complete.

Directions: Read the description of each and choose one you would like to complete. Remember, projects count as 200 pts of your grade. Make sure you complete the project and turn it in on time to get maximum points. Each project has a specific rubric that will be used to determine your grade.

For all of these projects ( BE CREATIVE! Have fun with this! (

Option #1 - 3D Cell Model – Create a 3-Dimentional model of either a plant or animal cell.

1) Your model must clearly show each organelle (cell part) that we learned about in class (make sure you show the correct ones…plant and animal cells have some differences in their organelles!)

2) You can use any materials you like to create your model, as long as is it big enough to show detail, yet small enough to carry it to school.

3) Your materials should resemble (look like) each cell part (if they don’t try doing things like painting/coloring them or modifying the part in other ways)

4) You must also have a key/legend explaining what each cell part does (number or label each organelle and use that for your key)

5) Possible materials to use: Styrofoam, playdough, clay, beads, dry pasta…the sky’s the limit!

6) Try using a variety of materials to keep it looking interesting! (Disclaimer: You may not use peanuts due to possible allergies)

**Note: if you would like to stay after school to work on this (Tues-Thurs), I will supply hot glue guns. You must bring in the parts to make the cell. Just let me know in advance that you want to stay after.

Option #2 - Cell Song/Rap – Create an informational song or rap about either an animal or plant cells

1) You can set your song or rap to the tune of an existing song, or you could even write your OWN.

2) Explain about each of the organelles and what they do

3) You will provide me with a copy of the lyrics.

4) You can perform your song/rap live in class, or record it (and put it on DVD).

5) You will have the option of showing it to the whole class or just to me after school. If you are performing in class, you must show me your lyrics before your performance.

**Note: this could be done individually or with one other person. If you work with a partner, I need to see both people have an equal part in the performance.

Option #3 – Cell T-shirt - Design and create a T-shirt with a picture of a cell on it.

1) Identify the type of cell (plant or animal).

2) Include the correct organelles for your cell (remember, plant and animals have some differences in their organelles!)

3) Label each organelle directly on the shirt with the functions listed either on the front or back of the shirt.

4) You may not find a picture of the cell on the internet and use iron-on paper to attach it to a t-shirt

**Hint: When using fabric paint or puffy paint, but something flat under the shirt (like cardboard from a cardboard box)

ALL PROJECTS:

List of Organelles:

Cell Membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria, Vacuole, Cell wall*, Chloroplast*

*Remember that some organelles are found in only one type of cell

*You must find and include the functions of all organelles in your project
