Plant and Animal Cell Project
Plant and Animal Cell Project
We are learning about cells in Science! Students need to create a 3-dimensional (3D) model of a plant or animal cell by gluing household items to a poster board. I will provide each student with the poster board. ½ of the board should be used for the cell and labels, while the other half will be used for the table of functions of each organelle.
Project Directions:
1. Choose either a plant or an animal cell.
2. Be sure to include all the parts of the cell and label them. The model needs to show all the elements of the cell.
For an animal cell – nucleus, vacuole, cytoplasm, mitochondria, and cell membrane
For a plant cell – cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, chloroplast, vacuole, cytoplasm, and mitochondria.
*Extra points will be added for labeling : chromosomes, nuclear membrane, nucleolus, Endoplasmic Reticulum, ribosomes, lysosomes – but they must be identified in the key and a description of the function must be accurate.
3. Create a table that accurately describes the function of each organelle that you label.
4. Title your project either Plant Cell or Animal Cell.
5. Complete the writing prompt and turn it in separately.
DUE DATE:
The models and writing are due Thursday, September 7th .
Have fun ~ and be CREATIVE!!
Mrs. Thompson
Examples of Materials:
Edible Materials: Twizzlers, Skittles, gummy worms, jawbreakers, gum, pretzels, marshmallows, cereal, pasta, dry beans, peanuts, almonds
Non-edible Materials: Clay, styrofoam, beads, yarn, dry noodles, pipe cleaners, buttons, rubber bands, toothpicks, construction paper, cardboard, packing peanuts, play-dough
Example of how you might design your cell:
Craft foam sheets or felt – for cytoplasm, cell wall, or cell membrane
Marble – for nucleolus
Yarn – for cell membrane or cell wall
Twizzler – For Mitochondria
Dry Beans – for vacuoles
Curved macaroni - put several together for nucleus
Baby Lima pea - mitochondria
Blackeye peas - vacuole
Lima bean – chloroplast
Jelly Bean – chloroplast
I am aware that my student has a writing assignment and 3D model of a cell due on Thursday, September 7, 2017. I understand that my student will be given poster board, but it is their responsibility to create the cell using things found at home.
**If materials are needed to complete the project, please email, message, or write a note to Mrs. Thompson before the due date. **
