SAC:

1. Welcome / Ground Rules / Intro

2. Review and Approval of Minutes: N/A

a. Mrs. Schefer motioned to approve; Ms. Sills seconded; all approved

3. Elementary Updates:

Kindergarten

• Events: Monday 4/1 - Police and 911 dispatcher visit to learn more about community helpers.

• 4/15 author visit

• 4/19 Easter Egg hunt

• Units of Study: Parts of Plants, decomposing numbers, digraphs ϑ

1st Grade

• Units of Study: Complex phonics patterns (igh, kn, ou, ph); Students are reading to self instead of being read to during close reading; living things in science (upcoming – caterpillar/butterfly and plant growing projects); writing 7 sentences

• Getting ready for 2nd grade!

2nd grade:

• Events: Field Trip to the Zoo in April

• Units of Study: Human Body; dictionary skills

3rd Grade

• Events: FSA Pep Rally and Field Day this Friday!

FSA Math Center review in April & Field Trip to Sea Life Orlando

4th Grade

• Events: 4th Grade is preparing for our writing FSA taking place on April 2nd by doing a writing review all this week and then a writing fun day (theme is writing detectives and students will be bringing in disguises to wear and completing a mystery scavenger hunt) on Monday, April 1st.

• Math Workshops: Beginning Wed 3/27, Students will rotate between the math teachers for review stations. This will continue each Wednesday until the math test in May.

5th Grade

• Units of Study: Science Projects

• Events: Popsicle Fundraiser on 4/12 (to prepare for Universal Studios field trip)

• FSA Writing: Tuesday 4/2

• FSA Review days are scheduled before reading, math, and science in May.

4. Middle School Updates

a. Senf: We are studying the Theories of Evolution.

In track we are competing at Embry Riddle this Saturday at 9am.

b. 7th ELA: We are coordinating efforts and reviewing argumentative and explanatory writing for FSA.

c. Dance- Preparing for our final competition of the season, “Revolution Talent Competition” April 5-7 in Jacksonville. Preparing for end of the year performances – Dance Team Finale Showcase – May 3rd at 6:30pm

-Dance Tech’s Celebration of Dance – May 24th at 6:30pm

d. 7th Grade Math: We had a great Pi Day celebration 3/14 with 5 different “center” activities involving 1) calculating area and circumference of circles; 2) determining the radius of circles when given the circumference or area, and 3) calculating Pi based on measures of circumference and diameter of various round object. We had a contest to see who could name the most digits of Pi (an infinite number). I’m amazed and pleased to announce that Janettely Rosado knew the first 29 digits of Pi. That’s unbelievable!! Oh, and we ate lots of pieces of pie and told Pi jokes . . . Who was the roundest knight at King Author’s Table? Sir Cumference!!

e. STEM:

PS I have participated in a PD called the Art of Reflection and Response. The celebration for this year’s event is happening at the DeLand Museum of Art on April 4th. Our lessons and reflections get published in a cool book put out by the museum. ϑ

Students are heading up the T-Shirt and Hoodie fundraiser as well as building the classroom essentials 3D printing & laser cutting fundraiser.

f. 8th Grade:

ELA: Horror, scary story writing, FSA prep using iReady and Florida Ready workbooks

Science: Solar System

US History: North and South pre-Civil War leading up to Civil War projects

8th grade math: Applications of Functions

Algebra: Quadratic Functions

Intensive Math: Applications of Functions

STEM: Surfboard design

Mrs. Savory begins maternity leave April 1st

Writing FSA Wednesday, 4/3

Fundraising for Gradventure in May (Chick-Fil-A spirit night May 8th)

g. Art: Our 3D1 Studio Art students are in the middle of working with clay (we weren’t able to use it until we relocated to our new classroom). We will also be participating in the Empty Bowls of West Volusia Fundraiser to help raise money for those in need. The event will be held at Venue 142 at 142 N. Woodland Blvd., Downtown Deland. 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2019. Adults get a bowl with breadsticks, desert, tea and silent auction for $20 with one child who can eat for free (additonal children are $10 each). For more info...

Our 2D1 students got to use spray paint to create planets and galaxy paintings that was integrated with science.

Finally, our 2D2 students finished a painting unit and are now creating large pencil sketches.

5. The Arts Updates

• Jr Dance Team Informational Meeting – Tuesday April 16th at 6:30pm in the theater. Audition Dates will be announced at this meeting as well as more information regarding the team for anyone who is interested in joining next years team.

• Festival of Dance – April 27th & 28th in Daytona. Both Junior and Senior Dance team will be performing at the festival. Both teams are bring one dance number to represent Ivy Hawn

• Elementary Spring Show has been moved to May 13th, 14th, and 16th due to FSA testing. Information on show times and days are on the school calendar.

6. Parent Academy and Community Events Updates

a. Golf Outing May 4th at Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna. If anyone is looking to sponsor or golf, contact Mrs. States at statesl@

SAFETY AND SECURITY:

7. Facilities: Safety and Security Measures Done Thus Far: Mrs. Conway / Mrs. Ventura

a. District-Wide Code Red drill happened today in the afternoon. Students and faculty practiced what to do if there were an intruder. Scenarios were discussed with students on how to barricade and hide. All went really well!

b. Fencing has been added to the Lakeview side and the breezeway

c. Playground will be put in the breezeway in an enclosure. There will be push bar doors on the left and right for the breezeway for emergency exits. Gates will be not be able to be opened from the outside

d. Administration building will be adjacent to the breezeway with an access door from the building to the breezeway

8. Traffic pattern update: Mrs. Conway / Mrs. Ventura

a. Starting Monday, April 1st, new traffic pattern will be in place. Zone assignments have been handed out; letters will be going home Friday

b. No more double lane for drop off; there will now be a passing lane on the left; students will only be able to exit on the right-hand side

c. Staff will be located throughout the lot and in areas to assist parents

d. The green zone area will be between the elementary gym and the flagpole; the pink zone area will be between the flagpole and the volleyball gym

e. Pick up is based on family-style pick-up; students stand with the youngest sibling

f. The only crosswalks available will be by the elementary gym or by the flagpole

g. Messages will be sent out via Remind, Facebook, and Connect-Ed

9. Questions / Ideas from Parents

a. Fence opening by D building? Will be locked and secured soon
