3rd Grade Weekly Letter

Week of February 8th 2021

PMA:

The Math PMA will be given on Tuesday, February 2nd. Please do not plan to pick your child up for any appointments, etc. during this time since we will be unable to release him/her.

The PMA is an online test that assesses Math, Reading and Science skills based on the Florida Standards.  These assessments provide us with valuable data indicating where the children are having success and where they are struggling.  Please be sure that your child gets plenty of sleep the night before the test and has a healthy breakfast.  This will help to ensure that he/she can do his/her best.

Math PMA test on Tuesday, 2/9

Math:

- We will start Chapter 10, Time, Length, Liquid Volume and Mass, this week. There will not be a review day for Chapter 10. There will still be review homework which will open on Friday, February 19th. The Chapter 10 Unit Assessment will be on Monday, February 22nd. Today, February 1st, in the Monday folder there will be an Elapsed Time paper that contains examples of the way we teach elapsed time using a T-Chart. We would appreciate your assistance in encouraging the use of T-Charts when solving elapsed time problems.

- In Math we will use a journal each day. Please help your child remember that this journal must be brought to school every day. These journals serve as excellent review materials and we encourage you to look at them each night to review what we did in class and to study the vocabulary words.

3rd Grade Math homework: Our expectation is that homework should be completed nightly except on the days we complete our Chapter tests, then there will be no homework. We are asking that your child complete the entire backside of the homework assignment, as the spiral review will reinforce all concepts taught throughout the year. We also expect them to complete the assigned problems on the front of each homework assignment, which will be stated in the homework chart (see above) at the beginning of each week.

Chapter 10 Vocabulary

minute – a unit used to measure short amounts of time; in one minute, the minute hand moves form one mark to the next

A.M. – the times after midnight and before noon

P.M. – the times after noon and before midnight

midnight – twelve o’clock at night

noon – twelve o’clock in the daytime

elapsed time – the amount of time that passes from the start to the end of an activity

liquid volume – the amount of liquid in a container

liter (L) – a metric unit for measuring capacity

gram (g) – a basic metric unit for measuring mass

mass – the amount of matter in an object

- If your child is struggling with any of the concepts please contact Ms. Thresher or Miss Comendeiro.

- On our 3rd grade website under the Math section, you will find different resources to help reinforce the skills we are working on. Under the Math section you will also be able to find a list of the Think Central Go Math Interventions that align with the chapter we are working on in our classroom.  Intervention videos will "show" how things are being taught and will give you better insight into how to "help" your child at home.

- If your child is absent when a math lesson is taught, he/she can go onto ThinkCentral to view the "Intervention" lesson for that particular skill. This will "teach" what was missed at school and hopefully help to prepare them for when they return.

- The log-in and password for Think Central has been placed on the inside cover of your child's planner.  Please utilize Go Math to help your child practice math concepts at home.  It can be accessed at  .  We will be assigning each student all of the interventions as we go through each chapter.  Please encourage your child to review previously taught materials through these intervention pieces.

World Lab (Science / Social Studies)

This week we will begin our next unit of study in Science: Plants. This unit will consist of hands on explorations of plants, including learning about their structures and functions. We look forward to learning more about the world around us. Keep an eye out for notes in the world lab journal, these will be most helpful in reviewing the concepts taught each day in class. We will have a quiz on Thursday February 11th focusing on labeling the main parts and functions of a plant. Thank you for your continued support at home!

Language Arts:

This week we will be working on using context clues in a passage. This is an FSA skill so please review the notes that will be in the journal.

Please be sure to monitor your child’s written sentences at home, ensuring that conventions are being utilized (capital letter to start, punctuation at the end). We notice this is an issue for third graders this year.

Homework for the week:

Please make sure to read 30 minutes each night.

Fluency Practice:

Fluency: There are two of the same passage for the nightly fluency check. One is for you to follow as your child reads. Use the table at the bottom to record scores once each night. Your child should only be reading this passage for one minute.

Reminders:

-School starts at 8:45, but students are allowed in the classroom starting at 8:15.

-Please remember to sign the planner each night.
