ME 199: Introduction to Engineering Design, Fall 2006

Design Project: Frame for the Autonomous Lawnmower

Objective:

Design a frame for this year’s entry in the Autonomous Lawnmower competition. The frame will be designed using 80/20 materials so that it does not have to be welded, and it can be easily changed as needed. The lawnmower selected is the Neuton CEMXX55, which has a volume of 18”L x 18”W x 15”H. The servo motor selected is the MMP-C21-G-300 servo motor with planetary gear reducer from Midwest Motion Products. The rear wheels are the NPC-PT5306 flat-proof wheels from NPC Robotics. The front swivel caster wheels are the 2700 series from 80/20. Design teams can have up to two members.

Due Date:

• Written description is due Thursday, November 16, 5:00 p.m. in Room 209 Russ.

Written description must include:

• A brief background discussion of the proposed frame design

• Scale drawings and overall description of your design

Specifications:

• No welding is allowed. 80/20 materials and brackets are to be used exclusively. All pieces must be off-the-shelf from 80/20, Inc. The only exception to this specification is the use of 1/4 inch plate aluminum for mounting the servo motors.

• The area over the rear wheels must be strong enough to carry the weight of the two car batteries and to rigidly support the drive wheels.

• A covered shelving unit must be provided in the front of the vehicle, which must be accessible with doors/hinges provided by 80/20.

• Details of how to join the 80/20 pieces are of the utmost importance.

Grading:

• Each person within your group will receive the same grade.
