Parent Information Packet

*This packet contains lots of information and outlines the major components of fourth grade. Please keep this for your reference.

Enrichments: Our enrichments block is from 9:05-9:50. The schedule is as follows.

Students will go to P.E., Music, and Art in one week intervals.

Gateway with Mrs. Price Monday-Friday pulled from ELA time

Planners: Children are responsible for writing their assignments in their own planner. Parents should sign the planner each night after checking to see the child has completed his/her assignments. Please feel free to write notes to teachers in the planner. It is each student’s responsibility to bring his/her planner to the teacher if the parent has written a note. We do not check student planners. Assignments and homework will be posted in a general location in each class. If a student is absent it is their responsibility to get their missed work from the teacher.

Discipline: Students will be required to obey the 5 posted rules that are posted in each classroom. Students will be thoroughly informed about the rules and procedures of each class the first weeks of school. After this time, students will be expected to have appropriate behavior. A reminder will be given when a student breaks a rule. A conduct mark will be recorded on a conduct clipboard when a student repeatedly breaks a rule. Student’s start off with 100% each day in conduct and drops points with every mark, parents will be notified with a conduct letter and or phone call if student falls below a C. Students will receive a weekly conduct grade that will be recorded in their Wednesday Folder. This grade is a cumulative grade over a period of five days.

Wednesday Folder: Graded papers for each class will go home every Wednesday. The papers will be stapled and have a strip on the front that should be signed by parents. Papers should be reviewed, signed, and returned the next day.

Uniforms: Students are expected to wear appropriate school uniform attire.

Boys: pants/ shorts- khaki or navy, with no extra pockets on the legs. No cargo pants. Shirts- navy, white, or red collared shirts. Claiborne spirit shirts may be worn with uniform pants each Friday for boys and girls.

Girls: pants/shorts/skorts/ jumpers/ dresses- khaki or navy. Plaid is acceptable. The school’s plaid pattern is red and navy. Shirts- navy, white, or red collared shirts.

Belts should be worn with all pants/ shorts with belt loops. Socks/ tights- must be solid white, red, or blue. Shoes- no backless shoes, no crocs. Shoes must have a back, tie, and/or buckle.

Homework: Students will be expected to do the following:

Read for at least 20 minutes each night. Students may read to themselves or aloud to family members. Children also really enjoy listening to adults read aloud. If you have time to read to your children, in addition to them reading on their own, please do so. Reading and listening are two excellent ways to help improve your child’s reading skills.

Complete homework listed in planner. Please put finished homework in the specific colored folder assigned for that subject. See Below. Ex: Math homework would go in the pocket of the blue folder to be turned into the teacher upon returning to school.

Any late homework will result in a conduct mark.

Colored Folders: Students will keep their work in the designated colored folders. Each color indicates which subjects: Reading/ language: red, math: blue, science: green, social studies: orange. Please do not clean out pockets at any time. Teachers will do that in class when we are finished with a unit of study. Students are expected to keep the folders neat, no drawings, or artwork inside. Their lockers and desks are shared and anything more will simply not fit in their desk.

Backpacks: Your child will bring all their textbooks home except their homeroom teacher’s set. These books are to remain at home until the end of the year. Your child’s homeroom set of books remain in desk and at the end of the day if homework is given, they can carry home. Please make sure they bring them back the following day as we use them in class. This helps to keep backpacks light for the students during the school year. At no time should your child have ALL their textbooks in their bag. Remember keep it light!

Journal: Your child needs to have three marble composition notebooks, one for each teacher. Each teacher will keep them in their class and be used for their bell ringer activity.

Assignments: Class time is always given to complete assignments. Some assignments are done entirely in class and are not sent home. However, some assignments may be sent home at times and students will need to finish these at home if it is not completed during the work time given during class. This is in addition to the normal assigned homework.

AR Book Goals: Goal is set by ELA teacher. Student’s levels are determined by STAR test at beginning of the year and again at mid-semester. AR is averaged in as one test grade for the nine weeks. This grade is comprised of the child’s total comprehension score from their AR tests for the grading period as well as the points they have earned that grading period. This grading period each child is required to earn at least 15 points. This is turned into a percentage. For example:

Let’s say your child’s comprehension average was 85% for the grading period and they earned all-15/15 points being a 100%. Both percentages are added together and an average is found. 85 + 100= 185. Then divide 185/200 to find the average. The child’s AR grade for this grading period would be 92.5.

Supplies: Students are expected to have their supplies at school as soon as possible. Teacher will house the supplies to pass out accordingly as the child needs.

Effort: Students are always expected to turn in their best work in their best handwriting.

Classroom Incentives: When students follow the rules and do the right thing they will be verbally recognized and rewarded. Each class has specific rewards (Student of the Week, Good Citizen, hundred’s chart, Brownie Points, treasure box) and recognition programs. We do try to “catch them being good” all the time throughout the day.
