LOWRANCE SCHOOL

SCIENCE FAIR

January 8, 2018

Parents,

In an effort to expand our students’ knowledge of the scientific method, each student in grades 4th-8th will be responsible for completing individual science projects. These projects are due by Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Students will receive a grade based on their projects being completed on time and how well they follow directions. They will also be required to present their projects to their class. Students may receive a limited amount of time to work on projects in class during Science, but the majority of the project will be completed at home. Projects for each grade level will be chosen for display in the Lowrance Science Fair held the week of March 5, 2018. Winning projects (Grades 4-6) will be entered into the Shelby County District Science and Engineering Fair.

Important Guidelines

Students must submit a project proposal to their Science teacher (4th-8th grade) by Wednesday, January 17th. Your child’s project proposal must have a parent signature and a teacher approval before he/she begins. Students will receive a grade based on meeting the proposal deadline. See attached project proposal sheet. All students must submit journal or log of experiment observations on (1st) January 31st and (2nd) February 14th. Students may still be working on their projects, but should bring in observations and data collected thus far. A grade will be given and the journal or log will be returned the same day.

Project should:

1. Be an experiment that reflects understanding of the scientific method

2. Include journal/log documenting observations and/or a chart, graph, or table documenting what happened throughout the experiment.

3. Must be on tri-fold project board and include a separate written report (see attached sheet for details)

4. May not include dangerous chemicals or live animals (that are brought to school)

5. Should not include any identifiable photos of students or adults; student’s name, grade, teacher’s name, and school should be written on an index card and taped to the back of the project board. This information should also be placed on the back of the last page of the report.

NOTE: Please keep in mind electrical outlets will not be available for our school fair.

(Volcanoes, Solar Systems and Kits are not acceptable to be used as projects)

Due Dates to remember

Wednesday, January 17, 2018 – Project proposal due to teacher

Wednesday, January 31, 2018 – 1st Journal or log of observations due

Your board should be set up exactly like this.

Experiment

Your projects are to be true experiments, which means that the answer is not found in a book, but the answer is found by conducting a scientific investigation. The following should be displayed on the project board:

1) Title

2) Problem (in question form)

3) Abstract

4) Hypothesis (If………., then……… statement)

5) Procedure

6) Conclusions

7) Results (displayed in chart, graph, or table)

8) Materials

Written Report

The written report should compile everything you did to investigate the topic. It contains all the data and information you collected leading up to the project due date. Your report will provide observers with vital data on the scope of the project.

Your written report must include:

• A separate title page

• A separate table of contents page

• Introduction

• Abstract (summary of your project including statement of purpose or question)

• Research/Background information

• Hypothesis (If……, then……… statement)

• Variables/Control

• A list of materials used

• Documentation of procedures used

• Observations and results (including graphs, charts and/or tables)

• Conclusions

• Bibliography

• Your name, teacher’s name and grade on the back of the last page.

* Notice that most of the information in the written report is the same information included on your display board.

When choosing your science project:

• It should be an experiment that must be tested over time with results documented in a journal, chart, graph, or table. Most experiments require more than one or two tests or trials.

• This proposal is a science grade. Five points will be deducted for each day it is late. Please remember if you decide to change your project, you must complete a new proposal and have it approved by your teacher.

• This sheet will be returned to you after your teacher signs it. We look forward to seeing your project presented in class.
