MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING OF THE PORT ELIZABETH DISCUSSION GROUP HELD ON 9TH MAY 2017

VENUE – NMMU NORTH CAMPUS, CONFERENCE CENTRE, SUMMERSTRAND, PORT ELIZABETH

1. Opening & Welcome:

The chairperson welcomed all present.

3. PRESENTATION: Globally Harmonized System (GHS) – Dr. Ilse Asquith

Dr. Asquith gave an overview of the GHS and how it applied in Industry. Some aspects of its origin, fundamental focus and challenges with classification systems was presented upon which all members present asked questions.

It was agreed that Dr. Asquith would forward the presentation to the chairperson for distribution with the minutes.

4. Minutes of the previous Meeting

The minutes of meeting of 17 March was proposed by Roelf Erasmus and seconded by Brett Williams.

5. Matters Arising from the Minutes of the previous Meeting

5.1 New Branch Structure

5.1.1. Naming of Sub Branch of Discussion Group

The chairperson provided feedback to all present. The naming of Discussion Groups will remain.

5.1.2. Reciprocity between SAIOH members and other African Countries

Dr. Williams mentioned that he took the item up directly with SAIOH. For clarity the information requested was whether Governments of other African countries outside of South Africa would recognize the Legal status of our reports. The chairperson to also follow up on this with Mr Hennie van der Westhuizen as he is on the Technical Council of SAIOH.

ACTION ITEM: Chairperson to follow up and provide feedback at next meeting of 13th of July 2017.

5.2 Possible presentation from Vendors SASOM/SASHOM

The chairperson provided the following feedback:

Contact with Dr Carstens from SASOM has been established. All SAIOH members are welcome at SASOM organised meetings. The members whom attended the last SASOM Meeting and presentation on Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace provided feedback regarding the claim of cpd points for attendance. A certificate of attendance as received from SASOM secretariat was forwarded to SAIOH head office. However, the request to allocate/recognise attendance for cdp points was turned down based on the fact that presentation at the SASOM meeting was not Occupational Hygiene related. Some discussion amongst members was held.

ACTION ITEM: Chairperson to follow up and provide feedback at next meeting of 13th of July 2017.

5.3 Next Topic for Guest Speaker

Some suggestions on topic for next guest speaker was made as follows:

• Lung disease (Dr Blott /Dr Struwing /Dr Krige)

• Toxicology – Dose Effect

• Vibration (Dr Brett Williams)

ACTION ITEM: Chairperson to organize next guest speaker based on availability of speakers for the next meeting of 13th of July 2017.

6. New matters:

6.1 SAIOH Special Council Meeting 26th May

The chairperson informed all present regarding the Special SAIOH Council Meeting of 26 May. Minutes will be made available online on the SAIOH website. All members were urged to regularly visit the SAIOH website to keep up to date with happenings within the profession.

6.2 SAIOH PCC Written Assessments 23 June

The chairperson reminded members who may be worthy of SAIOH written and/or Oral examinations to register timeously for such events. The next scheduled SAIOH written assessment in the Eastern Cape were to be held on 23 June.

Note: SAIOH Members must attend at least 2 meetings per year.
