Grade 3/4 Learning Tasks Term 3 Week 5 MONDAY

READING

Learning Intention: I can use the comprehension strategy `synthesising' to see how my ideas change as I read a text. Success Criteria: I have synthesised my text as I read. Learning Resources Required: Exercise book, pencils and iphone/tablet/computer.

Learning Task: Synthesising a text is the process of pulling together background knowledge, newly learned ideas, connections, inferences and summaries into a complete and original understanding of the text. When we synthesise, we are made aware of how our thinking changes and evolves as we read a text.

Gembrook Primary School Remote Learning Tasks

Today you are using the comprehension strategy `synthesising'. As you independently read a text (for at least 20 minutes), you should track your thinking, using the below anchor chart as a guide. Start by recording what you think about the text/topic before reading. Then, as you are reading, record any new thoughts/ideas. Finally, after reading, record any changed understandings.

Further Work Time: Synthesise using a different text.

WRITING - LEARNING TASK

This lesson will be taught during our class Webex session today. Please submit this learning task to Compass for feedback and evaluation by 5pm on Friday. Please refer to the link for instructions on how to upload the learning tasks.

Learning Intention: I can use information to highlight the benefits of Gembrook Primary School. Success Criteria: I have created a brochure all about Gembrook Primary School. Learning Resources Required: Exercise book and coloured textas or pencils.

Learning Task: Today, you will create a brochure for Gembrook Primary School. A brochure is a single or multi page folded paper used to promote a product or services. This piece of paper can be folded several times to separate ideas. Look at the school website, and use your knowledge of Gembrook Primary School to create a brochure all about GPS. Remember to include:

Capital letters Punctuation Neat handwriting

Things to consider: Audience - who is the target audience for your brochure? Purpose - what is the purpose of your advertisement? Word Choice - using descriptive language. Fluency - is your piece easy to read?

Further Work Time: Create a brochure all about your favourite destination.

BREAK: ensure students have a well-earned break with a snack, rest and a game/physical activity.

MATHS

Learning Intention: I can identify equivalent fractions. Success Criteria: I have used multiplication and division to find equivalent fractions. Learning Resources Required:

Exercise book, pencils, and iphone/tablet/computer. Learning Task:

What is an equivalent fraction? Equivalent fractions can be defined as fractions that may have different numerators and denominators but they represent the same value.

We have looked at equivalent fraction in class, remember, to find an equivalent fraction we need to multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

e.g. if I have the fraction ? and I multiply the numerator and the denominator by 2, I end up with the fraction 2/4, because 1 x 2 = 2 and 2 x 2 = 4.

Have a go at identifying equivalent fractions for the fractions below: *Remember - whatever you do to the top (numerator), you must do to the bottom (denominator).

Further Work Time: Take the fractions above and try to find 5 different equivalent fractions for each. SPELLING Learning Intention: I can identify words in jumbled letters using my knowledge of spelling generalisations, prefixes and suffixes. Success Criteria: I have used my spelling knowledge to identify and record as many words as possible, and ensure that they are spelled correctly.

Learning Resources Required: Exercise book, pencils, and iphone/tablet/computer/dictionary.

Learning Task: Today, you are to play the game Boggle, using the generalisations you know. Write down all the words you create. The rules for playing Boggle are as follows:

Each word should be of at least three letters. Words that have the exact spelling but different meanings will be counted only once. You cannot repeat any words. You can use both singular and plural forms of the same word. The QU cube counts as two letters. Game participants have three minutes to create words by connecting letters. Emphasize

that in order to form an eligible word, each letter must connect on the grid with the previous letter in the word. Copy the following point distributions next to the grid: three letter words and four letter words = 1 point; 5 letter words = 2 points; 6 letter words = 3 points; 7 letter words = 5 points; 8+ letter words = 11 points.

Use the following link to access Boggle online:
